Yeah it's really sad that the teacher is literally right there but doesn't try to stop the bullying. It actually plays part in one of the overarching themes of this series, which is how their society treats people with "amazing" quirks (to put it lightly) vastly different than those who are quirkless or with "unusual" quirks.

It's a thing in Japan when you graduate middle school you need to pass a exam to get into high school and you can apply to high schools not in your town and some high schools specialize is some areas like one might have a great sport program for a spot or maybe they have the higher grades so students from there go into high paying jobs

I believe the public 1-12 grade school system in very much an American thing, derived from how it usually works from the system it was built off of, in Europe.
Hence why grades 9 through 12 have their own specific names, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior, it's a holdover from when there was an actual transition point into "high" school, where public education ended at grade 8.

All your commentary about how people view certain schools and careers with prestige, all the commentary about how discrimination & bullying operate, what motivates certain characters to be driven or arrogant or competitive, how early experiences can change how people act and view themselves and how those experiences alter the trajectory of their lives, are all MAJOR themes of MHA.
I think you will really enjoy the series. Not only do we get the perspectives of the students, but we also get the perspectives of the teachers, administrators, and professionals of this world.
I am SO interested to hear your thoughts on all of that, since it is all directly in your wheelhouse.
SO much of this series deals directly with your own profession, too. It deals SO much with how we treat and educate children and how that reflects on society at large.
I have friends who are teachers and considered the career path myself, so i took a few courses in college. And even with that very introductory knowledge of education, I had SO MANY thoughts watching MHA as an adult. In fact, one of my teacher friends is who introduced me to the series lol. She taught middle school and is now a school counselor. We've had several intense discussions about this series.
Also, I'm dying for you to meet UA Principal Nezu lol

Just so you know, the school year in Japan starts in April and ends in March. They get Summer break and other vacations, the school structure is just different. Also at the beginning of the episode they were in Aldera Middle School. That's in reference to the planet Alderaan from Star Wars. Keep your eyes open because there's many more Star Wars references in this show.

As for episodes pertaining to school, The next two don’t take place in an actual school, but could be considered showing the prep work some people will go through to get ready to apply to one, especially if like Medoria, you start with a disadvantage.

All your questions are eventually answered in the show. It is SUPERBLY well-written. It's such a fully fleshed out world and concept. What it means to be quirkless in this society, what it means to be a Hero (notice the capital H...), the competitiveness of the Hero industry (and Quirk society), how this school system runs, etc, is all covered by Horikoshi (the creator of MHA). You mentioned how the teacher turns a blind eye to Midoriya's bullying - a glimpse into Quirk discrimination, a major plot point of the show.
All these characters are also so complex and grow so much throughout the series.
I would argue MHA is one of the best written shows/books of the last decade. Notice I didn't say anime or manga. Because I think it ranks as some of the best writing I've seen in any global form of media that I've consumed over the last few years.
I would be super interested to get your perspective on this series, since you are an educator yourself, and since so much of this series takes place in a school setting. I would absolutely watch you react to this entire 1st season (if not the whole series), because I'm dying to know your thoughts!

So in Japan Junior High is actually the end of the 'required' schooling by law. It is up to the parents or student to make sure the student signs up for and tests into high schools. They also do 3 years of junior high and 3 for high school, so I can see how you'd get confused.
If I had to compare it over here. High school is closer to community college and their colleges are more like trying to get into University, unless you are going to a vocational or trade school. However grades are heavily scrutinized when you apply, hence why I compare it to university in the US.
This is mainly because they consider teens as young adults, much like we used to back in the day. They even allow high school students to have part-time jobs, so long as their school is informed and it doesn't affect their grades.

I’m really glad that you’re covering this series. It’s a long one, but worth it. There are some parts that focus more on the heroism than the school environment, and even then the school environment is focusing more on the hero classes than the core classes. But I would still recommend checking a lot of it out, and commenting on how the teachers are teaching, examining, and scoring the students. There’s also one big arc centered around an inter-school, athletic event, though I forget what it was called. And there is the ark centered around the school festival, which I highly recommend. There are also the internships and work study programs that the kids do as part of their hero training. If you need specific episodes, I would suggest presenting a pole to your viewers. Or, you could just watch the whole series in your spare time, and pick the episodes to focus on yourself. I don’t think you would be disappointed 😊

Bakugo is the case of the big fish in the small pond. Where he is, he's the best and everyone says so to him, boosting his ego as a result, by then he believes he's unbeatable, the top of the top, but once he gets out of his confort zone things don't go as he planned and he meets others that run laps around him.

I'm from the US and I also took a career choices personality test in 8th grade! Though as someone already mentioned in the comments, the school system in Japan is structured differently than here. Anyway, that test I took in 8th grade was completely useless. We spent the whole class period working on it, and at the end all it told me was that the field I should go in to was "people." That's so vague!!! 😭

The whole thing with the teacher and the career aptitude tests, strikes me as how the creators were trying to portray an ableist environment. Throughout the story, we learn that humans began to develop powers, kind of like the mutants in X-Men. Initially there was backlash and human rights abuses, then the proportion of the population began to change. By the time we meet Deku, 80% of the population has superpowers, and there are rules and regulations as to who can act as a hero and where you are able to use your powers. That said, heroes are glorified in this society, and to not have powers, sort of puts you at the bottom of the pecking order. Essentially oppression has been reversed. one of the central themes of the show ends up being how to function in an ableist environment.

Ah, it's wonderful to see someone with a unique perspective watching one of my favorite shows! It's unfortunately difficult to pick and choose only school scenes to do. It's a linear narrative, as opposed to each episode having a self-contained story like in Spongebob or some of the other shows you've reacted to. And there are obviously some cultural differences between the Japanese School System and the American one.
I'd be quite interested to hear your thoughts on some of these differences! Here are some examples:
    1) Structure of School Year - The school year in Japan starts in April and ends in March. This lines up with the Japanese fiscal year, leaving graduating students with an advantageous hiring landscape at the start of the new fiscal year. Also, the school year is divided into three terms- April to July, Summer Vacation, September to December, Winter Vacation, January to March, then Spring Vacation.
    2) Required Schooling - The Japanese educational system goes as follows: 6 years of Elementary school, 3 years of Junior High, 3 years of High School, 4 years of University. Junior High the last of the compulsory schooling for Japanese students. Although not compulsory, the VAST majority of students go on to high school. I believe Public High Schools all have an entrance exam on the same day, but students are pretty much able to take as many Private High School exams as they want. After High School, roughly half the students continue on to University, while the rest either go to a vocational school or enter the workforce.
    3) Homeroom - School begins with a Homeroom period, overseen by Homeroom Teacher. This teacher will be the homeroom teacher for the cohort of students for their three years of high school. Homeroom teachers act as counselor, administrator, and even semi-parental figure for the students. It's sort of like an advisory period in an American school. Additionally, this home classroom is virtually the only room the students will be in. Instead of students moving rooms, the teachers move from classroom to classroom between periods. Must be nice for the hallway traffic!
    4) Class Representatives - Each homeroom elects two students to be their class representatives, also known as class president and vice-president. It's a bit of an exaggerated trope in Japanese TV, but it's a somewhat desirable position. For example, it might look good as a prior leadership role. These Representatives help settle classroom disputes, conduct classroom meetings, and coordinate between their class and the student council with regards to things like special school events.
    5) School Events - The two biggest ones that come to mind are the Sports Day and Cultural Festival. Sports Day is similar to an American Field Day. Students compete in various games and activities and are cheered on by classmates and family. The Culture Festival is an annual event where each classroom or school club put together some sort of booth, attraction, performance, etc. There isn't a one-to-one American equivalent, but it's a big event almost like a county/state fair.
There are some other differences but I'm afraid I've written too much lol! I hope you find this as interesting as I do!

Japanese schools are, generally, organized as 1 through 6, 7 through 9, and then a technically non-compulsory 10 through 12.
I say technically because almost everyone enrolls in those levels, but there's no law making it mandatory. It also functions a lot closer to college in that you have to apply to schools, you may end up attending schools some distance from your home, and you are not guaranteed to be accepted into a school.

The basic backstory of the anime is this about 80% of the population in earth entirely has a quirk. It could be anything from something very silly like growing out your nails at a fast rate, being able to elongate your eyeballs or as you saw with the case of Katsuki Bakugo the ability to create explosions, which is just a byproduct of his quirk, which is he produces nitroglycerin like sweat from the palms of his hands.
Try not to spoil any other characters that will pop up. They have very interesting abilities.

I think they start drilling students to think about their lives a lot earlier in Japan. There, high school isn’t required. However, there’s little you can do with only a junior high education. The whole system is also largely test based, so your future is largely determined by how well you do on exams.when compared to the American system, we obviously both have advantages and disadvantages.

deep down Bakugo actually knows that Izuku has a lot of heroic traits that he lacks so he’s always felt the need to put him down to convince himself he’s better.

Also if I'm not wrong... Japanese schools are vastly ahead of Americans, so they treat middle schoolers how we'd treat high schoolers. junior highs in Japan have entrance exams or something to go to their high school of choice. They have colleges too, I believe. They're just more ahead of us because they learn things earlier.

In the English dub they call it U.A. High, but in the original Japanese it's just U.A. which stands for Ultra Academy. It is a high school, though.

You know, I've been thinking about recommending this to you considering that this anime DOES involve a school setting...FOR HEROES!!!😃 There are hero courses at U.A. High that qualities for a reaction for this channel! However, without spoiling things, I will admit the later seasons won't involve much of school considering that things get...intense. Like, REALLY intense. I still recommend watching My Hero Academia whether you recorded your reactions to it or not! In the latter of which, this anime is about to end soon from what I've gathered.

Hmmm this is my first time watching the english version. Seemed to be fine other than idk if this onenmoment was edited out by you as its a pretty raw and reckless thing to say, but during the exchange when bakugo is bullying deku after class lets out, bakugo tells deku there is one way he can become a hero with a quirk - by taking a dive off the school roof and coming back in the next life as something other than a loser.
