The reason is Hal. He just does not want to spend like his dad did. Reggie Jackson was a controversial player and that did not stop The Boss from signing him and yes, Reggie got the Yankees a couple of championships regardless of his lack of 'camaraderie' with his teammates. That is overrated.

    • @julioluisveve905

It's not just Machado. The Yankees have not made an money offer to any top free agent, including Corbin. I think that they are just trying to pretend to be in it so that the price for the free agents that they are supposedly courting, jacks up for other teams. I believe that Hal has no intentions of spending top $$ for any free agent. I hope that he proves me wrong.

This is when he fought with papelbon. I see what ur saying about lefty power but the outfield is crowded and first base would go to voit or bird depending on who does best in spring training. Plus we don’t no how good Harper is at first since he hasn’t played there in a long time or if it was just a ploy to sign him. He can’t DH since Stanton is DH. There is like no room for him unless he wants to play shortstop or third base

I get it, he’s a great player during the regular season, not post season. He’s not interested in the Yankees.

I caught a couple of O's games this past summer. One was at the beginning of the season and one a couple of weeks before Manny was traded. In both games, he didn't really do much. However, the one thing that stuck out to me happened between innings of the second game.
While the Baltimore pitcher was taking his warm-up throws, Manny decided to take throws from the first baseman in a very nonchalant fashion. He took them between his legs, with the glove arm reaching down and around from behind his back, and then tossed the ball back to first with very little effort. Look, I'll admit that that observation should only be taken for the anecdotal note that it is. Maybe he just wasn't 'feel'n it' that day. Maybe the stress of not knowing where he was going to be traded played a part, to say nothing of the way that the season was going for the Orange Birds. But, regardless of the way that some Yankees fans hedge on the lack of hustle reputation of the player, you have to think that Manny must have been aware that he was under the microscope.
You'd have to think that Manny must have known that that type of immaturity, as in not taking his craft seriously, would find it's way a team's Machado File, to be scrutinized and digested in the off season. Yet Manny still chose to take infield warm up in a less than serious manner. That says something about the guy's professionalism.
He was the most talented dude on that field, and a leader by default. Yet he chose to act that way. I don't know why the offers are so low to Machado. But we do know that the psychological makeup of a player is a part of the decision making process when teams consider the composition for their personnel. In addition to the metrics that help to determine total bases and the ability to get on-base, the emotional makeup of an athlete most certainly must also play in decisions rendered.
Maybe there is collusion among teams. Maybe that's a better reason for Harper also not finding the offerings as lucrative as most expected, just like Machado. But that day in Rogers Centre, Toronto, and Manny's body language stuck with me. His act in the WS and the Rosenthal interview felt similar to what I witnessed from the man on that summer day.

the thing is, he isn't worth that. people just think that he is, which I guess is actually the same thing... anyhow, analytics will tell you that from a mere numbers point, no position player ever, especially not Manny Machado, deserves 25 million a year. the pay structure in Baseball is one of the more ridiculous things in this country. It is built on the backs of thousands of Minor Leaguers who can't live off their baseball wages alone and have to take jobs in the offseason. They make around 8-14k a year, it's laughable. Especially when you realize that high end minor leaguers in the 60s were making 6k a year. It's like the owners somehow convinced the player union that inflation wasn't a thing.

Agree with Michael Kay if you sign Machado just release Tulo (your out 550K, but you got a player who is not injury prone). Manny wants to play in NY and it is very obvious and the fact that he idolizes A-Rod is a bonus and he wants to live in NYC. I do not think now is the time to be penny pinching. Perhaps you sign Machado and then trade Stanton to LAD. Ownership cannot be this cheap. Make some moves and sign Machado. Trade Gray and Stanton. Save that money to give extensions to Judge and others soon.

The Yankees in 2018 broke the MLB team home run record without Machado their best player (Judge) missing about 50 games and Gary Sanchez having an absolutely terrible season. Offense is not their problem. Pitching was. They have solidified that with the additions of James Paxson and today's signing of Adam Ottavino. If they can somehow add another solid starting pitcher without giving up too much like they did in the Paxson deal, they will be in very good shape come October.

  • @10menwhen
    @10menwhen 5 лет назад

It’s ironic that Kay said “trade devers to make room for Machado because he has no war, he’s league replacement” but ends up 12th in all of baseball in WAR while manny was 61st.
Harper’s Phillies end up not making the playoffs, and machado ends up on a losing team and the fans wonder why the free agency system we have is so flawed.
It’s not about players getting paid or not. The issue is that we have way too many talented guys that are being forced to stay In pre ARB- ARB phase that’s preventing more quality players to hit the open market. Then when a player finally hits FA, teams are desperate and overpay for these players only to regret paying them 20-25M in the end of a players career who’s producing below league average.
You can’t expect the same 5-6 teams to splash every single offseason and expect everyone to get paid. There needs to be a system that pays for performance more fair rather than service time.

Edward Baladinakis Harper deserves 300mil+ cuz that is what he wants. I don’t think so he was 2015 mvp but that was 3 years ago and he had a down season last year. I don’t think he deserves more than 270mil for 10 years or 7 years/200-215 mil

@Edward Baladinakis People who say this are idiotic. Stop saying "no one" deserves that kind of money. People pay for the product and thats what gets them money. If the players dont get that money than the owners do. The league made 10 billion this year therefore players salaries need to increase as well. It's a business doesn't matter what job they have

I stated a few years ago the Yankees were setting themselves back several years by not re-signing Cano. That's exactly what happened. Now the Yankees have set themselves back again by choosing Stanton over JD Martinez. Machado won't change that.

The only thing about his argument about the 90 minute meeting is that the reports that came out that I read were that Hal's concerns were squashed and that he came out with a positive feeling. This would fly in the face of that. But maybe they were false reports. idk So much noise this year.

Agree with Don. Why just sign someone just to sign him. We won 100 games last year and I tend to think pitching is more of a need right now than hitting. Stanton bombed in the postseason but he’s a gamer very prideful and I expect he’ll be better this year. Everyone is healthy and we get more versatile with Lemaheiu.

Until the playoffs, across the board besides a few exceptions, Machado was loved and no one questioned his hustle or thought he was a jerk. Great teammate in Baltimore, and did hustle. This is a false narrative that everyone is running with because of a poor World Series performance, if the Dodgers won, non of this Machado slander happens. Organized effort from the owners to drive his value down.

NY's hierarchy was split on Machado from the beginning. On basic needs, they dont need more HRs - especially from the right side. Andujar was brought up a year early and still won (legitimate) ROY and had 1/3 less errors than Jeter his rookie year. Spend the money on 1-2 #1 ACES......and enjoy counting rings the next few years.

Honestly the Yankees are back to back playoff team and coming off a 100 win season with judge out almost the whole second half they don’t need these 2 guys but getting one of them would be nice and icing on the cake but is it worth jeopardizing the team chemistry of the young core that could be influenced by a big time guy like these 2 are i don’t have a problem not going after these guys all in

Sorry Michael. Your thinking is what got them Stanton. They're going to be saddled with him for the length of his contract because he's not getting more than what he's getting now if he opts out. The Baby Bombers are already starting or nearing arbitration. Their salaries are going to skyrocket. And there's Didi who is a fan favorite.
And if chemistry is overrated, then why was Boone hired?

This makes me happy on two counts and iffy on another,I am a hater of the Yankees, but have grown to be a fan of baseball as I've gotten older, and agree baseball is better with yanks in da mix, and find myself watching Yankee games and appreciate the history. But yankees have been growing their players in their farmhouse and being more patient since the passing of Stein. But will there be another machado or harper available in the market ever again? Yes I belive so so kudos to them. You signed stanton which was a toss up but now let the team grow and gel before adding pieces. Your good enough right now to win period.

This reaction is why I think Lozano released the (probably phony) $175mil offer. Because most teams will think they should get in the mix on that and join the bidding.
