  • This is part two of my exploration of Charney Basset in Berkshire and its Saxon charter which is found here:
    esawyer.lib.cam.ac.uk/charter...
I make the case that it describes an Old Brythonic (Welsh) fortification with a name that goes back to those pre-English days. It is named after the stream that is next to it which is a Celtic word for rocks and is the same as the rivers Churn and Cerne.
These history walk videos are about the English landscape in and around the south west of England (though I make the odd foray into Wales). I often use ancient charters (such as Saxon charters) to give me insight into the way the landscape was viewed in the past.
But it is not the Saxons that interest me the most (though they do) but the prehistoric world and its ancient monuments, trackways and ditches.

    Tantalising!
Nice to hear the Allotment Fox theme too. It encapsulates the character of your channel for me. I couldn’t explain why!

I don’t want it to be the theme now, we all have to move on, but I felt some gentleness was in order. There is more data coming through from next door charters including another charter for Charney that nearly made me faint when I saw it but is in fact next door. Grundy admits he didn’t think it belonged there, which means I won’t be able to bash him, sadly. There may be a hæðenan byrielsas (heathen burials) to discover. Are you now retired? If so, when are we going to see more videos per week?

@@AllotmentFox I didn’t realise it was officially the theme, I just like it and think it suits the lovely, gentle nature of your channel!
That’s a good and fair question about the number of videos whilst I’m not working. I’ve sort of settled on one per week at the moment, but more is going into them than when I was shackled. A number have and will involve more than one location, for example. They’re a bit more technically complex too.
I think I was burnt a bit last year when I did a few per week and the views just dropped away. The channel seems to be growing reasonably well based on the current approach.
I have some ideas for later in the year where it might work to do 2 per week, we’ll see.
The main metric for me is the level of interaction the videos generate and that is quite good at the moment.
Then there’s all people telling me that I must do Tik Tok! How’s that going for you?

A flat hill fort. So not Hillbillies, Flatbillies? I have jokingly referred to a mate in Norfolk as a Flatbilly. He was ok with it.

No, there was definitely the sound of banjos when I went through the village! I am Berkshire and the most Berkshire thing me and my dad did was sitting by the backdoor eating raw turnips. We thought they were a posh new purple-necked radish. He didn’t see the funny side but I was crying with laughter. One of a few garden mishaps towards the end, I also caught him carefully nurturing a deadly nightshade plant in the greenhouse. He thought it was a small round chilli.
