  • Clown eggs, and egg patterns in general are a great fly to fish trout, especially stocked trout. Granted they at times have a bad rap, and I probably wouldn't fish them on a remote stream with wild trout, but they are a wonderful option in rivers and creeks that are stocked periodically. These flies are super simple to tie, and can be tied very quickly. In fact I can bust out about 20 per hour, maybe more. I don't tie enough of these myself for me to use the hackle plier egg dispenser method like you see some other videos on RUclips use. These pliers cost a little bit of money, and I don't like damaging one for just this use. I am sure the vast majority of you don't either. The material is inexpensive enough that if you tie less than 20 of these a year, you probably would be better off just dealing with a little material waste than dedicating a hackle plier for these. That being said, both techniques are viable options that end up producing the same results.
    Now I have no relation to the material "McFly Foam" however it is one of the better materials out there for egg making. You can use this same technique with glo foam and other egg materials, but it always turns out better with the McFly Foam for me.
    For the hooks, I use barbless, but if you want a barb, the egg hook by risen is also a great option and slightly stronger even, so give that a try as well.
    Here is a list of the materials I used on this fly.

    I make mine a tiny bit different but I might need to try this way! Ps they work good for spawning carp too not only salmon and trout

    I’m on Vancouver island and I’ve been fishing these for the last couple weeks with the the salmon in the rivers. Caught an 18” brown the other day. One thing you should do to make these more effective is to tie them with a 7/32 slotted tungsten bead. Or a 5/32 if there isn’t as much as rain. That way you can just use a tapered leader with no split shot or sink tip and it gets down real fast and is easier to cast.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      Thats a different fly though. I agree, that can be a very effective way to fish them. However im not sure how more weight makes them easier to cast? Fly rods cast the line, not the fly. So a heavier fly is much more difficult to cast than a lighter fly.

    • @tysonseafoot7834
      @tysonseafoot7834 3 года назад

      @@McFlyAngler it’s easier to cast as for eggs to work effectively you have to get them down deep, which means using split shots or a sink tip. And an egg pattern is an egg pattern.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      @@tysonseafoot7834 Oh you mean its easier to cast than when putting a lead split shot half way up the line? Yeah, I give you that. Personally I usually drop some other weighted fly in front of it, like a tungsten fly of some sort. But yeah, you can make these with a tungsten bead as well.

    • @tysonseafoot7834
      @tysonseafoot7834 3 года назад

      @@McFlyAngler ya i just find the split shots get all tangled and are a pain in the bum. I find the sink tip doesn’t give the presentation that I want. I really like your videos tho too man, and I wanna use your method of using less fly foam.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      So I generally fish a two fly system, I rarely use lead. I use a heavy tunsten fly to get down, then drop a non weighted fly behind it.

    Will these work for steelhead in rivers in size 10?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      More than likely yeah, and like all flies, it depends on many factors. So I can’t say it will work the day you take them out, but yeah, egg flies work great for steelhead under the right conditions

    • @keiranrooker7981
      @keiranrooker7981 3 года назад

      @@McFlyAngler thanks man I appreciate it and egg flies usually work there they just looked a little small is all but that probably get some aggressive eats as there around the same size as a salmon egg

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      Tie it larger, I tie mine small, but no question you can tie these in a larger size. If your fishing steelhead you might want to look at Risen fly egg hook, it’s a little more stout, better for those big fish.

      Oh yeah I probably wouldn’t use it there either. Haha! For me, I only use this on stocked trout, and some other special situations where the fish are primarily feeding on salmon eggs. But the latter is rare, and depends on the fishery.

    1:55 - "perpendicular" doesn't mean what you think it means. Took me a second to see what you were trying to do.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 года назад

      Oh I know what perpendicular means, and I think I got it right here. The hook shank is going one way, and you hold the fiber at a 90 degree over it as you make a few wraps. I mean sure, if you want to be precise, it was not exactly 90 degrees. However without a way to measure a perfect 90 degrees I’m not sure anyone can get it with their naked eyes. Either way, I believe most people understood what I meant.
