  • Cheshire Police's Commercial Vehicle Unit ran an operation yesterday (16 August) targeting commercial vehicles on the M6 which were suspected of breaking laws or regulations.
Vehicles ranging from light goods vans to heavy goods vehicles were stopped at the Sandbach Check Site, near Sandbach services, by Cheshire Police and partners from Merseyside, Lancashire and Greater Manchester police forces.
Officers weighed vehicles on the site's state-of-the-art weighbridge to check for dangerously overloaded vehicles and checked drivers' records to ensure they had not been breaking laws for driving times.
HM Revenue and Customs officers took diesel samples to check for illegal fuel and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) checked for mechanical faults on vehicles.
Several drivers and haulage companies received large fines during the operation for failing to comply with regulations.
Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson visited the operation to see the work being undertaken by the Commercial Vehicle Unit.
He said: "We are targeting commerical drivers who are on their way, north-to-south, and either carrying too much, using the wrong type of fuel, trying to dodge fuel regulations and breaking the very strict rules which are there for our safety as road users to make sure their vehicles comply with the law."
The unit conducts regular operations to target unsafe commercial drivers who endanger other motorists.
