Hogwarts Legacy has many qualities and remains a great game overall. That being said, it is simply not the game I was hoping for and definitely not "Bully with magic". It does lay some very solid foundations for this franchise and I really hope the developers will maybe consider broadening the idea of Wizarding World games. Not every entry must feature Hogwarts and not every entry must feature a massive open world. I truly think there is a place for both a Hogwarts simulator and a Dark Wizard simulator. They just can't be in the same game, in my opinion. Let me know what you think!
100% agreed. It's a great Harry Potter experience but a mid or average at best game. Could have benefited from being smaller and tighter. I wouldn't have minded if there wasn't an open world but just a few areas. Like Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and the Forbidden Forest. Didn't need more than that.
Just imagine if you could assist to reoccurring classes with mini-games to get points for your house and having to sneak into the restricted castle areas at the risk of detention and losing house points when you get out of the school grounds and not return in time before someone notices your absence.
The unforgivable curses would work in a game where you play as an auror or dark wizard during one of the wizard wars. As aurors had ministry approval to use them during war time
I would LOVE to see a Bully-style Hogwarts game. I know it's what a lot of people want (and wanted), so hopefully we'll get that as a sequel or a huge DLC. As for a different sequel, I wouldn't mind it taking place AFTER this game with our main character now an adult. Plenty of potential there, as well.
If they had split this game into two games (one student sim and one adventure/open world game where you, the student, is now an adult) that would've worked out perfectly!
I just completed the game today and damn it was good. I really liked this game but it indeed suffers an identity crisis. It was also not the game that i expected in the first place but I enjoyed it. Great video bro! Enjoyed it.
Thanks a lot :) Yes, it's a really good game and I'm playing it as we speak. The sequel could be absolutely legendary if they focus more on the school though. Keep the massive open world for a dark wizard simulator or something haha!
Fair take. One of my biggest complaints is that we don’t get to sneak around the castle at night, but instead, we just walk around freely, without any consequences if caught. That was such a cool part of the movies and I was excited to do that as well. And you made a fair point, that without the unforgivables, we could cast spells on other students and pay the price for it. Lastly, I was frustrated that it didn’t look like the movies. Maybe that’s just me, but I was hoping it’d be almost identical to the movies. But the staircases were different, and Hagrid’s Hut wasn’t in front of the Forbidden Forest like it was in the movies and I didn’t like that, personally. Overall, fantastic game though 🔥
I can see why they did a one-size-fits-all kind of game for this one. The Wizarding World wasn’t in the best place with the JK controversy and poor performance of Fantastic Beasts and the poor reception of Cursed Child. I had the sense that early on this game felt like their only chance. So they made it as ubiquitous as possible. I agree the school setting and interactions are the weakest parts. But man the foundation they have for this game is perfect. And now that it has seen mega success. We about to get some GREAT updates going forward. Including Quidditch, damnit! I’ll also say most of the character interactions are lacking as well. Everyone feels oddly too friendly all the time. Which is why I was so intrigued with a character like Imelda Reyes who actually shared some snarky banter with our MC, who, let’s face it, is vanilla as vanilla comes. And that was clearly a deliberate choice. I wish our character at least had a spectrum of a distinct personality the same way Commander Shepard does in Mass Effect, whereas the latter is always a no-nonsense badass, it’s just a matter of how much of a paragon or renegade you wanted Shepard to be.
Absolutely. As I say in the video, the foundation is rock solid. But going forward, they really should branch off and make it more than just one game. I think people are ready for a Wizarding World game without Hogwarts where you play as an adult wizard and can be TRULY evil. And people are also ready for a Hogwarts simulator that doesn't feature a massive open world - a game in which you can be a kid for real. I want my Hogwarts student experience to take place in the castle, the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade and around the Black Lake, that's it! With an intro sequence in Diagon Alley, of course ;) And yes, morality is very poorly implemented. I'm currently going for an "evil playthrough" the second time and it really doesn't mean anything. I'm not sure I'll finish that second playthrough, to be honest. But again, that's because we play as a kid going to Hogwarts. The maximum they could do is like in Bully. I would be fine with that! Keep the complex morality choices for the OTHER wizard game that doesn't take place in Hogwarts. This whole thing is driving me nuts haha!
I completely agree with you. I would also add the fact that we have absolutely no backstory to our character, like why exactly are we starting as a fifth year with little to no magical aptitude aside from the basic attack. Also as mentioned in the video, the use of the unforgivable curses does not fit with the lore at all as there is no consequences at for use. I also agree that the school does not feel like the school at all. Would be great to have a curfew and you would need to sneak, and maybe even in kude a version of the marauders map in there. A actual class schedule would greatly add to the emersion of the game as well.
@@michaelevans5207 I do gotta say, I HEAVILY disagree on us not having a backstory. We do have one, it's up to YOU. I HEAVILY appreciate this since it lets us do whatever we want for our character. Like the Mass Effect example, my one problem with that game is how our backstory is already defined, but in this one we can add any personality we want to our character. They are only as vanilla as YOU make them, it's up to you to decide what personality they have. I legit was able to give my character character development, since the started as subtle jerk to a hero who learned to find the heart he always had in him. I do see what you mean, but man, I'm glad they went the blank slate route so we can do whatever we want with them. I do hope they add vastly more improvements to the game coming forward!
@@galacticquasaur2956 Very valid point, I did try an come up with my own back story, but I am an old school, Mass Effect loving gamer so my backstories never quite fit. 😂
or have a story that grows with the player. why couldn't we have our student fantasy, grow up, and then be a powerful wizard? god that would be amazing.
For me the classes are cool, but I would like it if there was more interaction with the Castle. Like being able sit down in the commons, the great hall or on the grounds. Actually have a drink at the three brooms or more response from the characters. For example, if i attacked someone in hogsmeat and they actually fight back.
I agree so much! I feel like a student the first 10 hours. But after it feels more like I am already an out of school wizard investigating the goblin rebelion. The thing I mostly miss is something which was actually cut and still has traces in the game. (Our MC can see traces of ancient magic... well dataminers can see traces of ancient content XD ) - A companion system involving not just Sebastian, Natty, Poppy and barely Amit, but also other classmates like Garreth, Adelade, Imelda or Samantha. - A background for your main character. Yes you where suposed to choose between pureblood, halfblood and muggleborn and also wealth like ritch, middle class or poor which would have given us 9 differing possible backgrounds over all. Now our MC is a pure blood ritch person which is why they talk the way they do all the time. - A relationship system with meters for our family, friends, enemies and even love interest. - A moral system working a bit like GTA where you get negative morale points for breaking rules or law. Also choices most likely where a thing at one point. Many of the story bits feel like that and many times the pacing is very off. And yeah that interview where the Gobstone quest was shown... choices matter my ass... I wish we would have gotten more classes as well. I rather have a mini game than wait and watch my thunderbrew getting ready or my venomous tentacula to grow.
My theory is that they spent so much time getting the Harry Potter aspects down, which they did very well, they basically copy and pasted the basic open world formula for the game part of it. Trying to also appeal to gamers not familiar with the series showing it's just like all the other games. But that essentially hurt the experience and I found myself really having a mixed experience when it could have been amazing. Take away the parts that are based on the series and it's a mediocre game imo. As opposed to something like Spiderman, that benefits from being familiar with the IP but is still great on its own merits in a vaccum. I wish the game was half the size and more focused on a curated gaming experience than the huge boring map cluttered with icons with arbitrary completion amounts to justify the size. Tbh there was no need for it to be open world at all. Could have been more hub based or just a few detailed locations with deeper more bespoke mechanics and interactions.
There's an early dev video I saw that the original vision for the game was it will just revolve around Hogwarts. Then sometime during early production, the devs decided to expand the scope of the game. I'm pretty sure Avalanche is getting all the necessary feedback. Let's not forget that this is their first AAA open-world title. And for what they achieved, it's still impressive.
I was personally really satisfied with the game because it gave me what I wanted: a fully realized Hogwarts to explore and the ability to use spells right out of the books and movies. I really liked the story and characters and it's incredibly impressive what the devs were able to do in their first outing. I certainly understand where you're coming from and the game certainly isn't perfect. Hopefully the devs are listening to all of the critiques in order to use the millions they made here to make the future games even better. The game is a 10/10 for me personally but I would give it an 8/10 objectively.
That's completely fair and I'm glad you're loving it :) I would still give it around a 7.5 myself and I'm going to keep playing tonight. It's just not what I personally pictured as my "dream game". I think it's a great wizard game, but not a great Hogwarts game, if you know what I mean.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic I completely understand what you mean. I personally would consider it a great Hogwarts game but that's based on what I personally wanted from the game. For me, all I needed was to be able to explore a fully rendered and mapped out Hogwarts that nails the aesthetic and feel of the wizarding world. And for me it did that with flying colors and then some. However, as I said, I totally understand where you're coming from and how the game would fall short for someone who wanted more of a Hogwarts student life sim. Heck, I'd love to play that game as well! I'd love to play all types of wizarding world games. I think I understand why they went with the choices they did. I don't want to dive too much into it, because of a lot of the discourse is tiring noise, but the Wizarding World has been plagued by a fair amount of controversy over the past few years. Between Rowling's divisive tweets as well as the handling of some other individuals involved with the Fantastic Beasts movies, the future of the property seemed uncertain. So I believe, for this game, they wanted to give us a sampler of sorts of all the types of wizarding world gaming mechanics that they wish to explore. Ever since the State of Play last year, there has been loads of talk from the devs about wanting to explore more of the Wizarding World and that a lot of that depended on how Hogwarts Legacy performed. So, not knowing for certain if there would BE another chance, they decided to give the fans as much as they could put into a single outing. And, sure, some elements of the sampler buffet were more delicious and well crafted than others. But the overall meal was still able to generally at least entertain the average Potter fan. So, with the game well on its way to making a billion dollars, I think it's safe to say that more Wizarding World games are on the horizon. Hopefully Hogwarts Legacy will get some DLC too but I am certainly interested in seeing what else they have in store for us. Give us a Mass Effect level adult wizard experience with a real morality system and significant consequences. Give us a fully fleshed out Quidditch game. Give us a true Bully-esque Hogwarts student sim. Give us games based off other wizarding schools. I will take the lot! Apologies for the essay. XD I'm just so happy to see this game succeed because there now feels like a whole new breath of life has been injected into the Wizarding World.
@@WhovianRoxas Oh absolutely! I'm SUPER happy the game is such a success because, just like you, I want to see more Wizarding World games! And Hogwarts Legacy is without the shadow of a doubt a step in the right direction :)
@@MichaelFromTheAttic I hope the same devs are able to keep working on whatever comes next. It was so wonderful seeing a development team that respected the fans, listened to the fans, and clearly cared about the IP they were working with. There have been cases showing how they actually watch a lot of the videos made by Hogwarts Legacy RUclips creators. So I have no doubt that, behind the scenes, there are meetings listing off the most common critiques of the game and theorizing how to address them for the next go around.
7:07 - Totally. I forced myself to roleplay so that anything I’m on Hogwarts grounds, I’m wearing some Hogwarts gear. If not, I’m puting on a jacket or ordinary cloak.
Right? Once again, that would have been fine if it had been implemented as a mechanic. Like having to go to your Common Room to change clothing. Of course, that doesn't work here because of the whole loot system thing but... a Hogwarts student experience shouldn't have a loot-based system either haha! You see? Things getting in the way of each other. Every single mechanic is like that. Another quick example: the curfew. Right now, it would be impossible to implement because of the generous fast travelling system - it would make sneaking at night a joke. But the only reason fast travel needs to be this generous is because the open world is massive. Reduce the size of the map and voila! You can have players sneaking around the castle at night and have them physically reach a fireplace connected to the Floo Network. I could go on and on. All of these issues would be INSTANTLY fixed if they had decided to make it two different games. It's truly crazy when you start to realize this.
For me it would have gone a long way if they included the student character more, at the end your character just stands at the end of the great wall, not sitting with your house at all, Weasley gives points to your house saying "They deserve extra points to be given to their house" instead of actually naming your house, in alot of class montages your character isn't even there, it feels like your not really part of the school at all
an easy fix would have been for the game to include a timeskip where you become an adult professor at hogwarts. First part you learn spells, make friends. second part, solve the mystery as an adult.
That would have been awesome! I don't think it's an easy fix though simply because, I'm sure, some people would like the first half but not the second and vice versa. I definitely like the teacher idea though, it would be a nice spin off idea for sure.
I totally agree that Hogwarts loses a lot of its character and seems lifeless once you’ve collected all the field guide pages etc. Having to have to sneak around at night time, sleeping in your own bed in your common room sleeping quarters, having to eat and drink, having a lot more classes to attend and even having the ability to sit down and talk to fellow classmates would have made the game a lot more immersive. More secrets to find would have also been much better. Still amazing game though!
I loveeee the game and I have went through every single houses with specific set of approach depending on the house personalities/traits. But what you mentioned is the one thing I've discussed with a friend. The life of a student and more engagement within Hogwarts itself. As a long time Potterhead, this lacking part is a bit regretful, so I am hoping in the near future, in terms of any possible sequels, or DLCs, we will get more of this. I would love the chance to be hopping on Hogwarts Express like any other Hogwarts students at the start of the year, and having more friendly competition within classmates or school seniors would be great as well (yep an extended version of Crossed Wands seems cool, really haha). And most of the things you mentioned as well, the curfews, rules, classes. I dont mind visiting other Hamlets at all, but at some point it felt like I'm a student on a lengthy school break because I am outdoor all the time helping running errands across all these hamlets haha. With that being said, I love the game, and how the game portrayed Hogwarts is similar and more in details similarly to the book, more so than the HP franchise. And this game has set such solid foundations for future gameplays and i'm looking forward to that. Also, thanks for your review, because its definitely my biggest issue as well
I love the game and agree %100, how the hell were we not collecting rare ingredients for Sharp? Charting ancient ruins? I started a new game and I'm taking my time with it. I have pretty much cleared the map of what I can and haven't even done the Library quest. It also makes the game a bit harder lol.
I definitely agree with all this. The game is addictive and beautifully done. However, that whole pull of being outside the castle vs. inside the castle is just too annoying. The fact is I'm more playing as a badass wizard in the environment against enemies and exploration than actually living life as a student except for the classes, teacher assignments, and Room of Requirement.
I imagine the game would play out so you'd start along with Harry in your first year, get sorted in whatever house, then interact with the main protagonists of the books/movies and play a role in the major story bits, all while attending classes and gaining additional abilities/spells, much like in Bully. I mean, that's every HP fan's fantasy and it's the classic fanfic setting, where your self insert befriends the protagonists and becomes an integral part in their journey. But even if it wasn't that, it has other things to offer and these assets can easily be reused to make that sort of game in the future.
I agree with everything said in this video! I wished for nothing more than getting some sort of morality system of some kind. I've heard people say that making the game based around Hogwarts only and it being a "school simulator" would've been boring, or that if the game included romance, it would've been "inappropriate". I completely disagree. As good as the game is, I feel like it needed more.
Honestly, what your character does in the ending of this game makes Harry Potter look like an absolute talentless joke 😅 You get in more dangerous situations in like two hours of gameplay than Harry does in the entirety of the book series haha!
I dont see the need to have unforgivable curses in this game, just breaks all the fantasy and cool combos u can do. Dont understand all the hype to use avada kedavra. And the imperius mechanic could have been easily exchanged to Confundus spell
I will have to agree with you, the game is brilliant but still need a lot of works. To be honest I was a bit disappointed that there is nothing to discover in the castle, I wanted more of Hogwarts as students, I love the journey with Sebastian looking for cure for his sister. The clothing system drives me mad a bit, the collectables are madness, so much time just wanted to collect gears and other things.
Honestly, same! I had a blast. I just think we would get in "best games of all time" territory if they REALLY focused on the school or focused on the powerful wizard open world separately. The foundation is really solid though!
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, just came on to my recommended - guess what game I compared it to in how its missing the social/emotional interactions of the students? BULLY! Right on point brother. Your content quality is so good.
Thank you so much! :) I couldn't stop thinking about Bully during my entire playthrough haha! And when I came back to Bully to record footage for this video, I was shocked at how ahead of its time it was. Attend English class to learn how to better apologize to bullies? That's freaking brilliant haha!
I still launch this game today. it is amazing. The world is so beautiful, combat is so good and I like the characters. The story is just ok but that's fine. It's more about theme and exploring for me. I spent so many hours in the castle. It's so nice
Don't disagree with you about the lack of mechanics, but the game is a huge IP and it's designed to be accessible to as many people as possible, and if you add all those mechanics you will make it better only for some people, the rest, more casual players, will find it too complicated. Result - you loose money, and big companies don't want to loose money.
Yeah I completely understand they wanted to appeal to a super wide audience. I just hope the success will allow them to branch out, try different stuff, take risks and really create more curated experiences. I feel like Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, the mobile game that already came out in Asia, already has a deeper student life than Hogwarts - with a class schedule, etc. So I hope one day we'll have a similar experience but with Hogwarts Legacy's level of polish.
Seems fairly consistent with the source material and the coming of age tale of the 5th year book the Order of the Phoenix. Would have been nice to see the companion system make the final cut.
Yeah, I can agree with all of this. They had to make the game as encompassing as possible, and as such it fails in some ways. But with sequels, they could easily expand in either direction. I wouldn't mind a game that was completely set at Hogwarts, with a little exterior exploration, and I would also love a game where you're an Auror or Unspeakable, where you perhaps have license to use Unforgivable Curses even if you're a good character.
Edit: since you asked for wishes for the wishlist: I wish there was some sort of progression system. Don't make me spend Skillpoints in order to improve certain spells! Make me use them in order to get stronger / different versions of them! Get rid of the rarity loot system. It's just useless like this. Since you keep the cosmetics anyway all I do all day is selling my green, blue and purple stuff in order to have enough space for future pic ups. Why not give us more inventory space in the first place? Less Ubisoft style gamedesign - regarding the open world and all the other stuff, like collectibles, "bandit camps" and what not. Stop filling maps with hundreds of markers and what not. Original comment: I talked to a friend of mine recently who played it to 100%. And he said it wasn't really worth it. And I feel the same. I'm sitting at around 30 hours and about half way through main story and side quests. I feel like after 20 hours you basically have seen most the game has to offer in terms of side activity and collectibles. Don't get me wrong I like most of it, but having to do dozens of these boring Merlins trials (with that unskippable cutscene every time...) or having to unlock what feels like hundreds of doors with that poorly designed mini game that is Alohomora isn't what I consider to be "fun" or exciting anymore. They could have cut the number of every collectible in half and there still would be more than enough. Also why not make Alohomora so that after you've unlocked the version II of the spell, easier locks open without the mini game. Same for unlocking version III of it and tier II locks opening up without the mini game... It's just sooo tedious!
I think they need to take Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and the Forbidden Forest and make the school experience as a MMO. You learn a spell or potion have to spend a bunch of times practicing it then you get to learn new ones, as you level up you go from first year to second year and so on. So many things are made into MMOs or live service when it doesn’t make sense and this is a property where it could work really well.
IF they were to make a sequel that takes place in Hogwarts, I think they should skip our protagonist's sixth year and jump to the start of the Seventh year as our character prepares for the N.E.W.T. Another reason why I think they should make the jump instead of playing out both sixth and seventh year is that there wouldn't be that much story beats after the adventure of the fifth year we had, and I doubt they'd put two years into a single game. Not only that, our character starts their fifth year in 1890, with a very to-be-wellknown wizard starts his first year in 1892, a certain Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Plus, with our character being older and nearly graduating, it can add consequence to using the unforgivable curses with reason that it was used defensively BUT the moment you do use it defensively, you are sent before the Wizengamot court. If you use it in any other situations than defense such as on a student or local townspeople (friendly fire is present in this game so you can, as you set as an example, set ablaze your classmate's robe as a prank), it is an automatic game over (you get caught by Aurors or other wizarding authorities though you can attempt to attack them, they'll be relentless and there is no escape). This'll prevent players from just Avada-ing every character they see just because they think they can because it'd be an automatic game over. As a seventh year too, you are able to venture out and visit not only the Ministry of Magic but also Diagon Alley as you attend to possible apprenticeships (perhaps a prologue before you start your seventh year and shows what your character has been up to since the events of Legacy). Apart from that, I'd like for them to: Adopt the school gameplay from Bully the game (sneaking out during curfew, gaining skills from attending classes instead of through the perks menu, general school hijinks, and friendly rivarlries between certain houses or NPCs) Companion system from Fallout (additional companions in addition to the original four we met have individual perks to assist in your journey or missions and will agree or disagree with certain actions made. Once a relationship nosedives into the negative, that companion will no longer assist or even talk to your character and you will be locked out from learning additional spells or traits from them) Morality system from Red Dead Redemption 2 (NPCs around the world will either be neutral, good spirited, fearful, or aggressive towards the main character based on their actions and choices. Negative reactions may result in missed side missions while providing darker side missions in others) More house specific missions that require players to replay the game to get a different story/ stories House point systems (deducting/ adding points for getting caught bullying by teacher/ prefect/ ghosts, missing classes, assisting with teacher/ student errands, extra credit work from professors, etc.) Availability/ options for romance (PG-13 level of course). Though I'd honestly prefer they move beyond Hogwarts and explore the other countries in the Wizarding World or even other schools since with the introduction of Natsai Onai opened the door for other schools. I believe that Ouagadou, Ilvermony, Mahoutokoro, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang were mentioned once or twice throughout playing the game so it'd be a nice change of pace and a good expansion. Plus if it were a true sequel, it'd be better as a standalone game than a DLC. Having a Sixth and/or Seventh year as a standalone game seems like a grab yet having it be a DLC feels like it's too much for just a DLC (a whole other school year/ 2 school years?)
I do agree with the first half of the video. They need to enrich the Hogwarts experience, maybe even make attending classes a daily quest so you can keep on RPGing after end game. But I don’t think mixing the surrounding villages with Hogwarts is a bad idea nor do I think we shouldn’t be able to cast unforgivable. You don’t have to if you think it breaks immersions but in my story my student is powerful enough to trick the authorities into not finding out, and I get to do that with this feature. So there’s that.
btw I have around 200-300 hours into the game (with a single main save file, except the 3 files I made for house quests achievements, but stopped at the map chamber). So I’ve really seen a lot of the corner of the game and honestly 60 hours is not enough for you to truly appreciate the game.
That's fair :) I don't think having villages is bad altogether. I just think the map is way too big for a game that should have focused on Hogwarts. As for the Unforgivables, I feel like if you need to have a personal meta to justify something, there's a problem within the game. It's not a mechanic. I dunno, it's a tough question for sure.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic I do like your idea of having the ability to interact with classmates/professors in Hogwarts! Say a prank spell (i.e. accio the candy from their hands) or an assist spell (i.e. lumos for a reading student); and I think unforgivables are stlll fine in this setting, but you could potentially ban it in the walls of Hogwarts. And make them only castable outside of Hogwarts, and under discreet situations. Say if you cast in front of civilians, and they are not killed within certain time, the Dementor comes for you. If you learned the advanced Patronus charm, then you could ward off the Dementors and give yourself a second chance (after all the ministries are too lazy to come get you by themselves.) And allow some of the higher ranked dark wizards to cast unforgivables as well. You can't block it with protego, but you being the one who can use ancient magic throw, can utilize that to move random objects in between the curser and you, to block the unforgivables. Those are all potentials they could've done, imo. :)
@@Uyhn26 There definitely is a way to make the Unforgivables work, as you explained quite well in your comment. Personally, I don't like when a game prohibits certain things in certain locations. Like having them unusable within Hogwarts just breaks the immersion in my opinion. For me, they're not integral to the student experience (at all) so I would rather keep them for another setting, but if they were used in very specific situations, like story decisions for instance, it could be cool. Like when Harry casts Crucio on Bellatrix. What I would do is make the Unforgivables locked behind a Morality meter. I mean, in the lore, you have to MEAN it for them to work. So that would fit gameplay-wise.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic I get what you mean. But in a way that is too much story driven. This game is story driven but also combined with an open world exploring concept, which is one of the fascinating parts that I love. So only have the unforgivables in missions is a basic soft lock. After all, if I were able to cast it in a mission, why not outside of that mission? I also understand what you mean by not liking to have spells unusable in certain region. Which is exactly what this game didn't do. But they compromised it with friendly fire. So if you lift that, maybe we could instead of ban it in Hogwarts, make it so that if you use and caught, you are expelled and need to deal with the ministry (or dementor.) In a sense the main game ends so you have to restart the save file and remember to not cast it or not get caught. That would make it more immersive. I think to me, as a wizard or a witch, especially with our special talent, we should be able to allowed (not by Hogwarts, but by the game) to learn all sort of spells the developer could implement. But however you use them depends on the player, and the situations (which need to be set up by the developer.) Any other forms of lock is boring and immersion breaking.
The funny thing is if this became just a school simulator everyone would complain that there isn't enough open world exploration so either way you're not going to win, i personally thought the game was fantastic but i do get the fact the castle does become a little empty when you've done classes. I feel like certain stuff like Quidditch, Whomping Willow and areas such as the Chamber of Secrets, Diagon Alley, Azkaban, The Ministry, the Shrieking Shack have been left out on purpose for a sequel or potential DLC. For people complaining about Unforgivables making the game too easy as they're OP, well they're supposed to be that's the whole point, if you don't like them then don't learn them lol.
I think there are different types of games for that reason though. When Bully came out, people were not complaining about the map being too small or the game not having lethal options, because they knew it wasn't supposed to be GTA. People are ready for a game that focuses on Hogwarts without the whole entire Highlands haha! And don't get me wrong, I would still include the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade and the Black Lake, because those are integral to the experience. As for the Unforgivables, I think the spells themselves were fine, I just think they were in the wrong game haha! Like I explain in the video, there are zero consequences for using them, and that's only because we play as a student. And it's also because of the Unforgivables that the devs had to turn off friendly fire, which is too big of a price to pay for me.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic I don't disagree with the fact their should've been more to do in the castle, but the rest of the game was fine. I also agree that using the unforgivable should've had consequences so it makes you feel that they're unforgivable and gives them that added edge of the spell you're using is dark and forbidden.
If this became a school sim, was marketed as a school sim, and was a really good school sim - complaints about no open world would be few and far between because the game is clearly not meant to have the open world aspect and is good without it. As it is, devs chose to do a bit of everything, which leads to a quantity > quality experience.
Idon't think this would work just as being a Magic school simulator, we atill qpuld have to have an engaging story, and this story would not work if it was too tied to Hogwarts, unless we wanted to tell similar stories to thoso Harry Potter himself has been through...I guess the game could still keep being the same way, if theu made every school immersion activities as actual gameplay mechanics, having social systems, classes (tied to leveling up skills), quidditch, curfew, true companions and more activities and secrets in hogwarts, the things that the game lack would have been achieved without sacrificing the open world aspect. In Bully we coulg get out of the school and go to the city too, the story required it, just as in Hogwarts Legacy, and I think a story is what holds stuff together and making HL just a Hogwarts simulator would not be the right choice, they had a risky chance and they made the best with the opportunity given, making this enjoyable to anyone even no Harry Potter fans, so even if it has flaws, the game has now a very solid and successful foundation ro be expanded upon and if they make sequels, I really want them to be a continuation of my character's story with ancienr magic, Sebastian, Poppy, Natty and the others, because the foundation is good, it juat needs to be deeper, and now they can do it because it was a success.
I mean Harry Potter used unforgivable curses in the movies. I do agree if you get caught using them by an instructor it should be consequences but taking them out of the game altogether isn’t cannon
Of course! Using them as last resort could be interesting. I didn't mean take them out of the story but just remove the ability to learn them and use them as frequently as any other spell. A game like Bully for instance never gives the player a lethal weapon and it's still super fun. And honestly, even as is, the Unforgivables are not the most fun spells to use imo. I would be really curious to see how far they could have pushed the other spells if the Unforgivables hadn't been in it.
I had no expectations so was much better with everything that I experienced lol Not sure if I would be keen on attending school type game as that sounds fairly boring compared to what we got but to each their own. I am just grateful that a good game came along as it's pretty dry right now depending on what you like.
As much as I liked this game, I agree with you 100%. Personally, however, I do not intend to play it a second time and I would prefer NG+. As for a sequel or similar game in this world, I'd love to see a game where you're an Auror conducting a detective investigation between the 19th and 20th century, I think it's a great setting as Hogwarts Legacy has already proven.
I will ;) At some point. I'm finishing up a novel, and I need to get this done before thinking about anything else. But the desire to come back is there, don't you worry.
I have a lot of issues with this game and pretty much all of them stem from the problem you identify here. Brilliant analysis! Frustrating though, because the game couldve been excellent if they had just committed to one idea! Edit: oh my goodness I have literally thought that the game should've taken inspiration from Persona. So validating to hear someone else say it!
Let me put it this way: With the failure of so many top studios to be able to both deliver 'on time' and release relatively unbroken games today is getting to be rare. Executive interference and impatience on the part on the investors is mostly to blame. Anyone with some gaming experience over time will realize the developers would have to have cut content and still polish what remained before it gets into the hands of players. I preordered and 'early played' the game on a decent but 6+ year old system without issue. Everybody wants more/different from what is available and it's quite common to see these 'wish-list' videos and posts when something is good. I'm close to 200 hours on my second play through and thought the time setting clever and the story engaging enough to both drive AND pace the game experience. As I see it - I've probably spent too much time on this game as is but if you feel good and time passes while engaged, who cares?
I'm glad you're enjoying the game as much :) And yes, I fully appreciate the fact that we got such a big AAA open world game in such a solid state at launch. Like I said in this video, what they achieved is very impressive, even though it didn't click with me as much as I was hoping for.
I'm not a Harry Potter fan, and I actually 'liked' that you didn't spend much time in school, because I was into the open world exploration. The devs probably had to decide if they wanted to lean into HP fans and make it more school focused, or market it to 'everyone' by reducing the time in class. So while they got someone like me to play, and enjoy the game, I can see how HP fans would be disappointed in it not leaning more into that very strong part of the HP world. It'd be like a Star Wars game, where you can't be a Jedi, and it's just a shooter. They probably have that heh.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic The Persona games have a really good balance of social, class, and RPG, but they couldn't do it with an open world. I think Bully is the best example of a template to follow. And yeah, a sequel could now be MUCH more in the vibe of the books/movies, and you'll get someone like me to play because of how much this game excelled. My HP friends love it, but want more of a school experience, and my non HP friends aren't playing it, but I'm working on them haha.
@@sydhamelin1265 Absolutely. Bully and Persona should be the blueprint. And you could still have the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade and the Black Lake. Imagine a system like in GTA where you can hang out with your friends, go drink a butterbeer, etc. That would be amazing.
I really enjoyed the game but it had a few problems for me. Most of my complaints you said but for a few you didn't say. For example I felt like the story was way too simple, I kept guessing what was going to happen and was correct each time. Also the map was a little too big for me. Not in a bad way just that there was so much room and we only went to a few spots for the story. Like for the last trial of San Baquar it was at the bottom of the map but barely anything else was there besides some side quests. I just hope that if and when they make a sequel they build on those mistakes. Also they are the pieces of dialogue that repeat every time like "Sometimes, it seems like all rodes lead to Hogsmeade" or " You can't imagine how inconvenient it was before I invented floo powder". Or how there is a barrier around Hogsmeade. Those are all my conplaints (mostly). This was a great video! Continue the good work mate!
My God... I really hope it will come out one day. That game was wayyyyy ahead of its time mechanically speaking. When I jumped back into it to record footage for this video, I was shocked. Attending English class to learn new ways to apologize or bully other students... That shit is brilliant! Hogwarts should have straight-up stolen ideas from Bully in my opinion. Give me multiple Potions classes to learn all the other recipes! Give me multiple Herbology classes to learn how to grow all the different plants! Give me multiple Charms classes to learn new spells, instead of having the Quidditch teacher show me Glacius haha! That made no damn sense.
Care to explain what's to understand? Because I'm fairly certain I understand very well what they were trying to accomplish, but it just didn't click with me 😬
It's sadly gotten very difficult for me to record since I moved 🙁I'd love to come back but I'd need to figure out a way to be more efficient and actually build myself a recording booth. But this is all too troublesome and too costly for me at the moment. Maybe sometime next year 🙂
This game really has struggled to keep me interested. I’ve played for maybe 15 hours and deadass been weeks since I’ve sat down to play it again. I’m thankful for the developers for trying their best at trying to make this game as good as they could’ve, but I have yet to actually feel involved in the story. Idk I feel like they should’ve just made multiple games going throughout the years instead of just starting at year 5. It’s just unheard of and does not feel like you’re actually a student. You are right for what little I have played I’m barely in Hogwarts. I don’t know the story just hasn’t been engaging at all for me, which sucks because as you very well know I as well as many others have been looking forward to this game for so long.
Yeah sadly the story just isn't interesting. There are parts of it I enjoyed, but overall it felt very lackluster. Like you, I appreciate the work of the devs and think they still did a pretty good job for a first game of that nature. But going forward, they need to streamline it. For a game that takes place in Hogwarts, you don't need much in terms of story to be honest. Just look at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It's literally just the threat of a serial killer. That's it and it rocks!
@@MichaelFromTheAttic very true! Bully was a fantastic comparison. We desperately need a Harry Potter game in that format! I believe that’s the game everyone says they dream of instead of a one off story. It’s a bit unfortunate really, it seems like we’re getting more and more ok and sometimes even boring games instead of great ones. Oddly enough, Ghost of Tsushima has had the same problem for me. I just have not cared about the stories at all. Both games have great combat mechanics, but they feel so lackluster when dimmed down by what is supposed to be a story game. I know Ghost is a hot take that’s just how I feel. Red Dead does it great. It doesn’t have the most amazing mechanics and yet it’s one of my favorites because of the story. But that being said, it doesn’t really compare to a Harry Potter game because we’ve already had enough stories in this world. We just want to experience living as a normal wizard kid.
Game would be boring as hell if we had classes to keep going to. We already get assignments from the professors. What else would they do if they show more classes? Like, really what more could they show or have us do?
@@ryanb4940 Bully did it and it was awesome! Just take potions classes. If you wanted to incorporate more potions in your playstyle, you could have focused on potions class and each class would have you learn new recipes. As for the class itself, it could have been some kind of Cooking Mama mini-game haha! With you having to chop the plants and all that. Even the LEGO Harry Potter games had the player use Wingardium Leviosa to grab ingredients on the table. Every spell could have been learned from classes as well, and not random rewards. Like instead of learning Glacius through the Quidditch teacher, which was very weird, you could have learned it in Charms class through a mini-game where you need to freeze stuff, extinguish fires, etc. And just like Bully, you would reach a point where you wouldn't need to go to class anymore, once you completed the program, but could return just for fun.
Lol, two separate games, are you out of your mind !?.....they should improve lots of aspects, mechanics, AI, proper NPCs and terrible game design etc. Honestly WB had wasted their money on Avalanche. The only thing right in this game is combat. Otherwise it's wasted opportunity. They should have gone with Rockstar or someone.
To be honest don’t think they going make anything with this game at all. They already have idea for hogwarts 2. They would had added stuff to this game already
Let me know what you think!
couldnt agree more, well presented great video!
Exactly! Honestly, it MUST happen!
The unforgivable curses would work in a game where you play as an auror or dark wizard during one of the wizard wars. As aurors had ministry approval to use them during war time
That would be a SICK setting for the "adult wizard game" I was talking about!
I think being a dark wizard should be like this not its own game but it should matter more maybe even make u end up in azkaban
Yeah I really didn't like where the Forbidden Forest was either 😬
With an intro sequence in Diagon Alley, of course ;)
And yes, morality is very poorly implemented.
@@MichaelFromTheAttic im pretty sure they see this game as having a future franchise soi think it will get a sequel
or have a story that grows with the player. why couldn't we have our student fantasy, grow up, and then be a powerful wizard? god that would be amazing.
That would be amazing!
I agree that you don't feel like a student...more like an adult detective or at least a senior becoming an aora or dark wizard.
For me the classes are cool, but I would like it if there was more interaction with the Castle. Like being able sit down in the commons, the great hall or on the grounds. Actually have a drink at the three brooms or more response from the characters. For example, if i attacked someone in hogsmeat and they actually fight back.
Right? And there are other games that do this, so it's definitely possible.
I agree so much!
I feel like a student the first 10 hours. But after it feels more like I am already an out of school wizard investigating the goblin rebelion.
The thing I mostly miss is something which was actually cut and still has traces in the game. (Our MC can see traces of ancient magic... well dataminers can see traces of ancient content XD )
- A companion system involving not just Sebastian, Natty, Poppy and barely Amit, but also other classmates like Garreth, Adelade, Imelda or Samantha.
Good take.
@@AntoineBandele So was your video!
I would love to see that dev video! Do you know where can I find it?
I disagree a game in the harry potter universe should feature hogwarts
It's sad that the Devs spent so much time on Hogwarts castle.......for you to never be in it.
Facts 🔥
I thought I was the only one 🤣
Also, thanks for your review, because its definitely my biggest issue as well
I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :) Definitely a very solid game, despite my issues with it.
I agree 100%.
I feel like a guest at Hogwarts.
I agree with everything said in this video! I wished for nothing more than getting some sort of morality system of some kind. I've heard people say that making the game based around Hogwarts only and it being a "school simulator" would've been boring, or that if the game included romance, it would've been "inappropriate". I completely disagree. As good as the game is, I feel like it needed more.
it is a bit odd how much straight up life or death combat you do in this game, you are after all just a student.
Honestly, what your character does in the ending of this game makes Harry Potter look like an absolute talentless joke 😅 You get in more dangerous situations in like two hours of gameplay than Harry does in the entirety of the book series haha!
@@MichaelFromTheAttic very true, maybe things where simply tougher back then and Harry had it easy.
The MC has to be in the top ten most powerful wizards and witches of all time, destroying absolutely everyone they duel and taking down Ranrok dragon.
@@theperson8487 Hands down 😅
I dont see the need to have unforgivable curses in this game, just breaks all the fantasy and cool combos u can do.
Awesome video dude! I totally get your 2 games idea and I really like it! Even though i haven't enjoyed a game the same way since GOW Ragnarok:)
Honestly, same! I had a blast. I just think we would get in "best games of all time" territory if they REALLY focused on the school or focused on the powerful wizard open world separately. The foundation is really solid though!
A missed opportunity to let Lupin say ridiculous at 7:33 :D
Ah crap 😂
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, just came on to my recommended - guess what game I compared it to in how its missing the social/emotional interactions of the students? BULLY! Right on point brother. Your content quality is so good.
Thank you so much! :) I couldn't stop thinking about Bully during my entire playthrough haha! And when I came back to Bully to record footage for this video, I was shocked at how ahead of its time it was. Attend English class to learn how to better apologize to bullies? That's freaking brilliant haha!
@@MichaelFromTheAttic can you do me a favor and send me your settings & or what you used? Your game looks waaaay better than mine
@@DynoMikeGaming I played on PS5 man, sorry 😬
@@MichaelFromTheAttic hey they did a great job on the console look
A curfew and house points would be the most important change in the sequel. It would also make disillusionment viable
Exactly. I want those two games to not get in the way of each other. Let me be a REAL student but also let me be Voldemort 2.0 haha!
Original comment:
I talked to a friend of mine recently who played it to 100%.
There's an upcoming mobile game called Harry Potter: Magic Awakened that seems to be scratching that itch! I'm actually pretty excited about it.
Apart from that, I'd like for them to:
Adopt the school gameplay from Bully the game (sneaking out during curfew, gaining skills from attending classes instead of through the perks menu, general school hijinks, and friendly rivarlries between certain houses or NPCs)
Companion system from Fallout (additional companions in addition to the original four we met have individual perks to assist in your journey or missions and will agree or disagree with certain actions made. Once a relationship nosedives into the negative, that companion will no longer assist or even talk to your character and you will be locked out from learning additional spells or traits from them)
Morality system from Red Dead Redemption 2 (NPCs around the world will either be neutral, good spirited, fearful, or aggressive towards the main character based on their actions and choices. Negative reactions may result in missed side missions while providing darker side missions in others)
More house specific missions that require players to replay the game to get a different story/ stories
House point systems (deducting/ adding points for getting caught bullying by teacher/ prefect/ ghosts, missing classes, assisting with teacher/ student errands, extra credit work from professors, etc.)
Availability/ options for romance (PG-13 level of course).
I sorta feel for fans knowing it wasn't what most of them wanted but they had to save face and keep up the hype.
100% agree man but i think they can make in time so the game com-out this way
Idon't think this would work just as being a Magic school simulator, we atill qpuld have to have an engaging story, and this story would not work if it was too tied to Hogwarts, unless we wanted to tell similar stories to thoso Harry Potter himself has been through...I guess the game could still keep being the same way, if theu made every school immersion activities as actual gameplay mechanics, having social systems, classes (tied to leveling up skills), quidditch, curfew, true companions and more activities and secrets in hogwarts, the things that the game lack would have been achieved without sacrificing the open world aspect.
Yep! An Auror game would be INCREDIBLE!
You gotta come
Back bro
Yeah I can totally see that and I understand that decision, especially for a "first game"
No house points? 😂 You get awarded points throughout the the entire game.
I agree with you.
Great video, reflects my thoughts on the game very well.
Also they are the pieces of dialogue that repeat every time like "Sometimes, it seems like all rodes lead to Hogsmeade" or "
You can't imagine how inconvenient it was before I invented floo powder". Or how there is a barrier around Hogsmeade. Those are all my conplaints (mostly). This was a great video! Continue the good work mate!
Yeah the story was a major letdown as well 🙁
c'est la vie. it's sad but truth. bully 2 can't come soon enough .
@@MichaelFromTheAttic spot on. in the end this was Azkaban Legacy , thank you sebastian :O
@@alinsofan501 I actually like to call it Auror Simulator haha! Because you spend most of your time outside the castle looking for dark wizards lol.
Great thoughts!
Couldnt agree more
I confess myself disappointed. Every aspect of this game is superficial and trying too hard to be a Ubisoft game in the worst kind of ways.
I see what you mean... 😬
Five minutes in and I'm pretty certain that you just didn't understand the game.
Care to explain what's to understand? Because I'm fairly certain I understand very well what they were trying to accomplish, but it just didn't click with me 😬
I like all your point and suggestive features me I would like to add It should be rated 18 you know what I'm talking about 😏
Bros been gone for a year? 😢
Yep. I just want to attend Hogwarts.
