I am a Management Consultant in real life but in my Bootlosophy channel, I make videos about boots and all things boot related. This channel posts reviews of boots, unboxing of new boots, and follow-up reviews, and in doing so, may explore the philosophy of the brands and makers as well as the collectors!
In this channel, I will give information found in my research about the brand, the construction, and the materials, but I will express my personal opinions about how I feel about the boots reviewed.

Even if a video is sponsored, I will review the product openly and honestly giving you my personal opinion, warts and all, of the product. I will refuse any sponsorship deals where I am fettered in what I have to say.
I may be given products to review, which is different from receiving cash payment for reviewing an item. In these cases, I insist that the provider of the goods has no rights to what I say and may not review the video before I publish it. Again, my opinion will be honest and my own.

Like you, my first foray in heritage service boots was the Thursday Captains. Gotta agree with everything you said. I've since bought a few Grant Stones. While the Captains do not compare well against Grant Stone, they're still fantastic boots and I still wear them.
    Cheers!

Thursday makes boots both sufficient unto themselves---solid builds, good materials, excellent service---and as gateway to further explorations as well as superior (and far most costly) makers. What I like about their models is that the aesthetic also provides such an easy, wearable beginning. Journey on and the next thing you know you're on to Viberg...

Have those exact same Thursdays and love them! They actually have seen some rocky trails up in Washington State where I wore them for over a week straight. Absolutely love them. I’ve also worn a pair of their Scout Chukkas 5 days a week for two years and they’re just now getting worn out in the heels. Thursdays also tend to just fit my feet well so I’m a loyal customer. With all that said I look forward to getting a pair of Iron Rangers someday.

I now only have a pair of Thursday President. Just under a year old, had heel pads replaced 6 months in and now looking at a resole. I am looking to add some red wings into the mix but torn between a blacksmith CRP or Muleskinner Iron Ranger (sadly they don’t do the Merchants anymore). Unfortunately in the UK we end up paying a premium for importing boots that then make then extortionate, so for me grant stone aren’t even a consideration.

Like many others here and yourself, Thursday was also my first pair of boots other than Worx/Red Wing and Danner. Captain in black (IIRC I backed them on Kickstarter), Stomper in black and Legend in tobacco (I have a couple pairs of Beckett Simonon chelseas so tried these). I'm 11.5 D/E ish and went true to size on the Stompers and Captains and they're just fine but should've went down a size on the Legends. The lining makes them really easy to slip on, unlike my White's moc toes or Nick's Tacticals.
The zipper failed on my Stompers and after an email, I got a replacement pair. For the price point they're a good boot and they're my go-to when I need another pair of boot trees.

I have a Captain and Vanguard but wish they would have a last that leans more work aesthetic. The almond toe is really aggressive compared to a Grant Stone or Parkhurst and leans very dressy. Something a bit more masculine in their rotation for a service boot would do well I believe.

People forget that rubber midsoles or leather midsoles also break down. As do leather footbeds that rot from sweat. And leather heel stacks break down, especially if regularly exposed to water.
You only need to watch the numerous cobbler and re-soling videos to realise that midsoles are replaced frequently when re-soling regardless of material.
So, for me, this "poron breaks down" thing is completely overblown. In fact. the poron midsole with these boots is likely to last just as long as a standard leather midsole. Foams like poron were developed to extend the life of regular EVA.
For info, when Trenton & heath broke down a pair of these exact same boots in one of their earlier videos, the boots had a leather midsole as well as the poron one. That might have changed of course.
The EVA strip in the footbed is probably the most vulnerable part as regular EVA has a shorter lifespan (though complaints about that all seem to be quite a long time ago ). However, watch a lot of re-soling videos from cobblers and see the state of so many leather footbeds after exposure to sweaty feet day after day and you realise whatever you use in contact with your feet is going to break down after time given the right conditions. I've seen several cobblers mention that this causes the premature death of many Red Wing boots.

The insole is glued in and tears easily if you start pulling it out. My pair of presidents had the foam start to breakdown after 6 months and have been happier with leather insoles from my other boots i have. Hopefully the foam will break down enough that i could pull them out and scrape the residue eventually, but that will take a while since i have rotation of several boots now.

Best $199 boots on the market, no doubt, and I love the looks of many of them..and you get a good value for money in most cases. I do have one-pair of Diplomas (which I do like) but I can tell the right insole is slightly wonky (lumpy). I use an insert, but I can always feel an issue with the shim. Anyway, to me, they're on-par with Helm Boots (which I would buy on sale for the $230-$250 price range), but I haven't determined which of the two brands I actually prefer. But yeah...once you move-up to Grant Stone level...you can just tell the different. Is it worth the price eifference? To me, absolutely! Cheers.

    • @helloken
      @helloken 26 дней назад

For me, I place a lot of weight on cost per wear, so the Grant Stone would have to last me twice as long. I sure am curious though...and I think they potentially could with enough resoles...

While im not a fan of the brand, those are meant to be a good value and i think they nail it. They do look really good. They dont aim to be the best or the cheapest.
Since this is a private comment and totally not public, i think purists in every niche need to get over themselves. Sure leather is going to form and hold up better, but they aren’t really priced to be made up of the finest left handed cage free veg tanned leathers. Same as goodyear welts. Boots have existed just fine without them. Old man rant over, now where did i leave my teeth.

Well Thursday Captain with Storm King sole was not so long lived. I go them pretty wet riding my motorcycle. After that the right boot sole started to separate and the welt threads on the inside heel to toe broke. They are five years old but used mostly on motorcycle. Thursday gave me $50 store credit. I poured a large amount of contact cement and will hope for the best. I will not buy there boots again as my taste has gone significantly up market, Viber, Wesco , Nicks, my wife thinks I am nuts.

Hey Teik (sorry if spelling is off),
Just an FYI I do not believe the classic leathers with the EVA midsole have a steel shank. Feel free to check on their website even now and you'll notice no mention of a steel shank for the models with that EVA midsole. I think I've also seen a cobbler take apart a Thursday Captain with the EVA midsole and saw that there was no steel shank. So I'm reasonably confident there isn't one in your classic leather model either.
Some models of the President boot by Thursday do have steel shanks even in a 'classic' leather. However you'll see that these models also have a leather midsole (I have Presidents in dark coffee for example and can confirm I see a leather midsole).
