Maybe you need to make a monthly segment of giving cameras a once over a year after the first review. see if it got better or how it does after a firmware update. I would trust a second review more than a first one.
Yeah "a year later" segment on cameras would be cool, kind of a quick update review of how the "older" cameras stack up against the current competition.
Very good work Chris! - love that you actually do a retest and explain fair an square the issue, without emotional superlatives. Good work! Hopefully Olympus can add phase detect in their next models, so the camera can focus without extra confirmation moves.
The Shooting Menu does have a setting to change the clip recording time. Go to Shooting Menu #1. Go to the 4th selection down to the record mode for image quality. (There is only an icon on this line, but there is room for text - I wish they had used.) Next, go to Movie and --> at the top of the list (MOV FHD F 30P) --> use the right rocker button to enter the fps and sec settings. The path to these settings I just described doesn't seem to be in the user manual. The manual only shows you how to do it the way Chris did via the quick menus.
Oh how I hate when reviewers has inconsistent use of "Tracking". Tracking is that camera has somekind tracking gate positioned user placed target. And then tracking gate moves around the frame selecting corresponding AF point that is on that tracked target. And then C-AF aka Continuous Auto-Focus system is used to move the plane of focus back and forth related to camera distance. While tracking system responsibility is to select the AF point from available ones on the AF system going left/right/up/down on the frame. Tracking doesn't focus anything, it only moves used AF point around the frame. Continuous Auto-Focus moves lenses to move focus closer or further to get focus on the selected AF point. Combining C-AF + Tracking, camera can track the subject and then continually focus on it. Almost every photographer use C-AF alone by manually chosen AF point or group, as tracking can lose a track and start track something else than wanted part.
The best eye autofocus I have found at a Panasonic Lumix GX80. For a short time I had this camera to try out. I used it to take photos of my baby granddaughter. I was amazed how fast and safe the eye focus was with open aperture and equivalent 60 mm focal length.
Great that you give manufacturers the benefit of the doubt, even to the point of doing another video. Also great that you stay true to what you find. Love what I'm seeing from you guys and maybe Olympus is watching this too and will do a firmware update.
Thanks guys! I really like the small size, 5 axis image stabilization, and of coarse the looks of this camera. I was hoping it could replace my GH3 for stills since that is mostly for video. The focusing issue is deterring me however. Would I be better off with the EM5 MKII? Cheers, Greg
Hi ! Thank you so much for the review. Do you know if the Olympus Pen-f received a update for the focus issue ? I'm very interested to buy this camera...
Glad you tried the 300mm f4 PRO with the E-M5 MkII. Although they were released around the same time, it's clear that this lens wasn't meant to be paired with the Pen-F, and many video reviews ignore this, try to kill two birds with one stone and review two Olympus products in one go. Good for you guys for retesting and trying the lens with a different body!
All my Olympus cameras, unless I'm on a specific incident are on Single Auto Focus. CAF isn't has not been great. Somehow Chris and Jordan went took a fancy to trying CAF for this model. Street Photos are the least situation I'd use CAF. Move on.
why e-m5ii picture look so yellowish when compare to pen-f do you guys notice any different in their jpeg engine in standard mode? does pen-f has better auto white balance? jpeg processing is the reason i choose olympus, please help me decide
You are right but who cares I would not buy that camera to use it that way :) the only complain I have is that it's to expensive for what one gets. It's a camera to enjoy and have fun with.
One of the few reviews that was totally honest about the Pen F. A camera in this price range should have better continuous focus, be weather sealed and have an external mic jack.
Love the channel, maybe you should do the continuous AF test in the same parking lot for each camera review. That way we can compare different cameras in similar conditions. Lighting of course will affect things, but it would be a better baseline.
Hey Chris and Jordan, I'm curious if you have the Custom Function "Rls Priority C" under Section C (Release) set to On or Off. I have the EM-5 Mk II and the default is on which means it prioritizes speed over waiting for focus. When turning it off the hit rate increases significantly and the speed doesn't suffer noticeably. No idea why this is even an option and it's even crazier that it's the default.
Oh how I tortured Jordan with this camera! A year ago I was in Calgary and I visited the store and I spent over an hour trying to rationalize my desire for a black Pen-f. As I manage an art collection the hi-res capability and small size perfectly fit my needs. So it was buy this or wait for the EM1ii to come out in December. But I SO loved the look and feel, and Jordan SO hated all its flaws! The deal breaker finally came when it wouldn't go directly onto a tripod or monopod with Olympus's own 7-14mm lens mounted and that was then, and probably still is, the best MFT lens for documenting exhibitions. So Jordan, if you're out there, you saved me! I held out for the EM1ii and it is a monster of a camera. I do still hope that someday Olympus will make a Pen-f Mark 2 that Jordan can love and I can use as a second body with all those lovely little MFT primes.
You know what? The colors from Pen-F are quite amazing (more like Canon), especially compared with the Sony FS5 filming camera and even with the other model of Olympus. If you have calibrated monitors, you can agree with me. So, it can be an amazing camera for a photographers. Both EM-5 II and FS5 have kinda yellowish image overcast.
That is ab interesting work-around for the cAF issue. For street situations, this will be helpful when desiring to teack your subject in a crowd. Thanks!
I wish olympus would put some bigger sensors in their cameras, shutter ring on the lens mount and aperture ring on the lens like the old OM. that would be a fun camera to use.
This camera looks pretty good with that all retro style. Too bad the focusing capability seems to be retro as well. But hey, thanks guys! That's very objective! Both of you are the best camera reviewers!
+Bima Adi Nugroho Sylirian i've tested the camera with the 17mm that comes with it. works just fine. and a streetphotographer does not shoot burst and goes with the C-AF, and of course your not going for the pervy lenses like the 75 and 300. the standard 17, 25 work just fine. better than my sony. i consider it a low budget leica, great build, great feel, fast enought af and small.
I haven't tested this camera but Kai from DigitalRev seems to be struggle with the C-AF too. I like the style of this camera and the compact size but the C-AF seems to be holding me back. I am not buying camera just for street. What Sony camera you use btw?
+Bima Adi Nugroho Sylirian Sony Nex 6, but I use 99% of the time manual focus lenses, that's the reason i bought it. today was an official presentation for the pen f and I put the 25 1.8 on it and was just stellar on point to point. C-AF i haven't tested it this time. i like the camera even more. the store will have it for renting, and will take it to a wedding in the summer for sure. for a street shooter is more than enough. they seem to always compare all cameras to the d4, 1d speed action monsters. but a good photographer works with the camera, if i can manual focus street shots and i find the af speed on this camera fast, well it's more than good for me. you don't run and shoot on burst with the camera, that's ridiculous. i tried the gx8, and the dials are so small that it hurts for setting the speed and aperture, and it's so big....and the tilty evf sounds good but the situation you need it makes it redundant. And Kai, well....he's a whiny twat most of the time, so I always take his opinion with a pinch of salt, it's good to form your own opinion by testing cameras when you have the occasion.
You have a point Nick. Perhaps I should try this thing first. Hopefully it will be available for rent. I use NEX 5R which basically similar to NEX 6 but without viewfinder and hotshoe (but good thing there is an adapter for that). I am quite satisfied with the result and perhaps PEN F could do even more.
I always want Olympus to succeed in the camera market because the Omd was really the mirrorless camera that made me realize years ago that mirrorless was the future, when everyone was still acting like it wasn't, so it is a let down that this Pen is such a nice looking camera that under performs, and I really think that micro 4/3 has only one nitch in the market, and that is to be smaller and cheaper priced then the apsc cameras. but their not really doing that. so I would rather buy a Sony A6300, and I think Olympus should jump into the full frame market because the 4/3 market doesn't seem to have any ability to really grow much beyond where it's at now, and on a side note, I am still hoping that Canon and Nikon come out with a great full frame mirrorless camera
Version 2 of the Pen-F will be a winner. They need to work on some things first for that to happen. 1. Weather Sealing! 2. Better continuous and single focus. 3. Small lip grip on front for longer lenses. 4. Make the touch screen actually touchable for most things. Until then the OMD is the better but uglier choice.
+Yippie 1. and 2. that is omd territory, but for 2. the single point works just fine, you don't buy the pen f to shoot with the 300 f4, that is the job for the omd series. 3. they have a small grip for it. 4. indeed, not the best touchscreen out there.
I was referring to the example of Chris when he tried to capture the moving Jordan. There is no "one fits it all" setting. If your object doesn't have eyes, I would use C-AF with the Custom Menu A - AF/MF - C-AF Lock on "Normal" or "High" and a small ! AF-field. The thing is, you always have to put your AF-field on your subject, otherwise the camera losts the focus. That is what the AF-Lock is for. To prevent, that the camera immediately focus on other things, if you put the AF-field sideways of your subject you're tracking.
That's too bad about the performance considering how good the camera looks. I wish Sony would hire whoever designed it for the next revisions of the A6300/A7 line.
+friutfulmonk 58 We're waiting for Ricoh to get us a full production sample of the K-1. We really don't like doing these 'second reviews' that are necessary when we look at pre-prodcution cameras. Jordan @ TCSTV
+TheCameraStoreTV thx for the reply. The K-1 is such a beast looking by its specs. Canon and Nikon finally got some serious rival in FF market. Yours K-3 review conviced me to buying it, so I can't wait for TCSTV review of the K-1.
Damn bro - did you thumb thru the manual at all before making the first review??? Not every camera is going to be a low-light, speed beast. These camera companies will never make an all-in-one camera with all-in-one lenses and on-body features, though they are more than capable of doing so.There will always be a trade off with all equipment - "Its has this but lacks that". That's the capitalist game being played on all us consumers everyday.
I know cameras are now being used to shoot films but honestly, the auto focus will never be as fast as a camcorder that's actually built to shoot videos.
+Kyle SoSik actualy not true. But small sensor size helps focus because of de DOF. If your DOF is endless, making something in focus is a lot easier. even for a computer.
Can you do a test for Lumix GX8's continuous autofocus too? The Pen-F and GX8 are sold at almost the same price point. Would be interesting to see Pen-F vs GX8.
+TheCameraStoreTV Thank you very much for your input Jordan. I would be getting the GX8 for its 4K video and photo ability. Thumbs up ++ to TCSTV for making wonderful camera review videos. Keep up the good work guys. Really appreciate the work that TCSTV did.
+Jr Brian Hogan My GX8 keeps freezing at the worst possible when I try continuous autofocus - i.e. when I'm in high speed mode and I'm just about to get the money shot. Even the on-off switch no longer works ... I need to remove the battery. My GH4 doesn't have this problem
As a panasonic G7 user i have to say jordan is right. That's until you start recording 4k. That seems to tax the processor which in turn seems to render the camera AF-C practically useless.
"If you're doing the high-speed continuous frame rate..." Sigh. Just like the initial video, you've misunderstood how the camera works. Continuous AF only works in the low-speed continuous mode, 5 frames per second, NOT the high speed continuous mode at 10 frames per second. The camera is not performing well because you don't have it properly set up. Just like when you criticized the video quality because you were in the "My Clips" mode and not the regular video mode. Your complaints are all due to user error.
+Naturo Umikazu Pretty much. About 1 in 3 are blurry. It seems to have no idea of distance. You can focus on the same thing ten times and you will get a different distance each time. It took me 9 attempts to get a tree in focus. Swans are impossible. Being honest it is the worst camera I own. The viewfinder is poorly designed and prone to light pollution.
+Douglas Knisely I guess they use a new Sony prepared sensor (even Fujifilm does it with the new sensor made by Sony after the Fuji specs) and I guess they need more time to learn it well. After so many years with Panasonic sensors... so, expect firmware updates.
Christ almighty I agree, I got rid of em5 Mkii because the c/af was appalling along with the handling. I now use a Panasonic gx8 which is miles better.
I have not tried this buy some people have reported that C-AF works much better if you use the vivid picture profile. Olympus uses contrast AF so boosting the contrast on the sensor has been reported to help with C-AF. Might even work better if you manual boost the contrast in the menu? There is some info here. www.ayton.id.au/wiki/doku.php?id=photo:olympusem5_af www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3368100 www.flickr.com/groups/1941650@N22/discuss/72157631237901324/
+Cody Robinson will a 6D focus as fast like the 1Dx mark ll? or a d610 like the D4s? one is a sports camera(E-M1) the other(Pen-F) is a street camera and casual shooter that is elegant and refined.
I still hate you! Just kidding! I had three Oly bodies before. I just bought a G7 for 4K video. I must say, I like Panasonic overall control better than EM5 (not Mark 2.)
Thanks for the honesty too bad it is such a pleasing looking camera but apparently it is like a really nice looking girl missing front teeth -great looking until she smiles.....excitement lost...
I don't understand the praise the design of this thing gets. Looks like junk next to any Fujifilm camera. Why do everyone but Fuji insist on those awful mode dials on the top? Give me a shutter speed dial like a grown up please.
Even as a loyal Fuji user.. it has to be said that the Pen F is the best looking mirrorless out there!
+Mike Uhlinger Yes!
+Ran Bar-Levi Like a long-term review - would be a great idea, esp. if a camera went through multiple FW bumps
+TheCAmeraStoreTV Please bring Jordan back for more runway'esque shoots!
Very good work Chris! - love that you actually do a retest and explain fair an square the issue, without emotional superlatives. Good work!

I just bought an excellent used Pen F. Fantastic and fun.
Great walk around camera.
Thanks. It's refreshing to watch a review with some detail and bite in it. You guys obviously researched and tested this focusing matter a lot.
Thanks guys! I really like the small size, 5 axis image stabilization, and of coarse the looks of this camera. I was hoping it could replace my GH3 for stills since that is mostly for video. The focusing issue is deterring me however. Would I be better off with the EM5 MKII?

Hi ! Thank you so much for the review. Do you know if the Olympus Pen-f received a update for the focus issue ? I'm very interested to buy this camera...
I had exactly the same issues with my E-M1, now is back from repair service, will test it in details in a couple of days.
Thank-you for the honest and fair apparels

I'm already psyched for the Pentax K-1 review!
One of the few reviews that was totally honest about the Pen F. A camera in this price range should have better continuous focus, be weather sealed and have an external mic jack.
It is a retro camera. Retro AF should be expected.
Well, the "retro" firmware needs a fix!
retro design not technology
retro sensor as well
Thissmithy Manga pun intended
Love the channel, maybe you should do the continuous AF test in the same parking lot for each camera review. That way we can compare different cameras in similar conditions. Lighting of course will affect things, but it would be a better baseline.
Still a fantastic camera but as you mentioned, not for sports or wildlife. As much as I love the design of the camera, I'll be sticking with my GX8.
Howie Mudge Photography holy shit just ordered one for wildlife. Fml i regret it now
Hey Chris and Jordan, I'm curious if you have the Custom Function "Rls Priority C" under Section C (Release) set to On or Off. I have the EM-5 Mk II and the default is on which means it prioritizes speed over waiting for focus. When turning it off the hit rate increases significantly and the speed doesn't suffer noticeably. No idea why this is even an option and it's even crazier that it's the default.
This is a camera best suited for travel photography. For sports, it is still DSLR.
Kudos to you guys for this follow up! Thanks for the addendum.
You're criticising a camera for not being very good at something it isn't really designed to do. A spade makes a lousy screwdriver.
I love your reviews guys.

+Hank Roest I remember that! Glad you waited for the E-M1II. I'm hoping for an equally sexy but more functional Pen-F 2 as well.
Jordan @ TCSTV
And if Olympus do make a good Pen-F 2
I'll get on a plane and buy one from you ;--)
Excellent review guys, but maybe you should re-review the GX8? Shutter-shock seems to be an issue, but you guys never mentioned it during your review.
+Darell Sison Use the electronic shutter - all cameras have shutter shock to some degree
Thanks, but it seems weird that dpreview thinks its a big deal while the video review they made never mentions it at all
Thanx guys - good work (again). EM5 II FTW!
I only use the single area autofocus mode anyway. Would Love to know how this new 20mp chip performs though.
Too bad....I've really wanted to jump to mirrorless but will just have to wait until Canon/Nikon figure it out I guess. Thanks for the great update.
Just picked up a clean Pen F for $575! Going to look for a Lumix/Leica 15 1.4 and make it a mini Leica Q!
That is ab interesting work-around for the cAF issue. For street situations, this will be helpful when desiring to teack your subject in a crowd. Thanks!
very cool, big fan of you guy's work. thx. j.

1. and 2. that is omd territory, but for 2. the single point works just fine, you don't buy the pen f to shoot with the 300 f4, that is the job for the omd series.
3. they have a small grip for it.
4. indeed, not the best touchscreen out there.
Thank you...
Tried using the intelligent Face/Eye-detection? On my E-M1 this helps a lot.
I was referring to the example of Chris when he tried to capture the moving Jordan. There is no "one fits it all" setting. ***** That's why I have the Laser-Dot-Sight EE-1 for Birds/Wildlife photography. ;)
We need to see the new D5 soon =)
What's the best camera is it ELP7
That's too bad about the performance considering how good the camera looks. I wish Sony would hire whoever designed it for the next revisions of the A6300/A7 line.
Guys, do you plan to do a video about Pentax K-1 anytime soon, or you will be doing full review after its release in april?
+friutfulmonk 58 We're waiting for Ricoh to get us a full production sample of the K-1. We really don't like doing these 'second reviews' that are necessary when we look at pre-prodcution cameras.

+friutfulmonk 58 Are you satisfied with the K3, any issues? How is focus tracking? Thank you!
+PIPIS COOL I haven't received it yet.
All right, if you remember please post your experience with the K3 here in the comment. I will also buy it in the next months!
i would like to see a "second look" on a6300 in Calgary.
Lets do hope they release the firmware to fix this.
I think the autofocus is fine, the problem is Jordan´s wall coloured face :D

+simianinc I see. Do you send it back to Panasonic for repair or something like that?
As a panasonic G7 user i have to say jordan is right.
That's until you start recording 4k. That seems to tax the processor which in turn seems to render the camera AF-C practically useless.
Maybe I should wait for the 2nd version.
+Steven Kim what second version?:)
"I'm going to say this right of the bat"
Have you stopped smoking?
Who uses autofocus like that for portraits?
Is that Jordan or Zoolander...blue steel.
After a year with my Pen-F...Yea im selling the little guy.
Is better than my XT 1. Every other shot is blurry even in single point.
+john craig Are you saying that X-t1 - the shots are blurry even in single point ?
+Naturo Umikazu Pretty much. About 1 in 3 are blurry. It seems to have no idea of distance. You can focus on the same thing ten times and you will get a different distance each time.
It took me 9 attempts to get a tree in focus. Swans are impossible.
Being honest it is the worst camera I own. The viewfinder is poorly designed and prone to light pollution.
I've never liked oly cont auto focus - I have an EM-5 which is an otherwise brilliant camera
Good looking camera but with a disappointingly inadequate performance.
the em5 ii even looked better side to side with the pen F
hey guys i love your job...please review the ursa mini...PLZZZZZZZZZZZZ
black magic ursa mini is insane...please review ;)
Wow. If C-AF is even worse than the E-M5 II, that's bad. I gave up on C-AF after trying hard to adapt to its quirks.

So we go from daFaq (Nikon) to Fecked (Olympus)... THIS one really hurts to see
What's up with your hair?
EM1 is still Superior in C-AF :)
+Cody Robinson will a 6D focus as fast like the 1Dx mark ll? or a d610 like the D4s? one is a sports camera(E-M1) the other(Pen-F) is a street camera and casual shooter that is elegant and refined.
Haha, great, THX!
Audio is thinny
its just broken from day 1
Hope Olympus fixes this. Otherwise the Sony 6300 will destroy it.
Pretty similar to the RX100 series, unfortunally. AF-C is pretty much useless :(
Hipster camera.
Stop cropping Chris' chin.
Sorry, way too much negative banter in your videos...
So, all looks and seriously lacking in substances (continuous AF)...
looks even less impressive than what my fuji stuff does. nono, thanks olympus, i keep my money.
Jordan looks so unhappy ... :(
I still hate you! Just kidding! I had three Oly bodies before. I just bought a G7 for 4K video. I must say, I like Panasonic overall control better than EM5 (not Mark 2.)
Thanks for the honesty too bad it is such a pleasing looking camera but apparently it is like a really nice looking girl missing front teeth -great looking until she smiles.....excitement lost...
how many times does he have to crack his voice lol
I don't understand the praise the design of this thing gets. Looks like junk next to any Fujifilm camera. Why do everyone but Fuji insist on those awful mode dials on the top? Give me a shutter speed dial like a grown up please.
awh man this sucks
if you depend on continuous af, you are an amateur.
micro 4/3 is useless
