    Not just her, but I think that when we contrast ourselves with western countries, many of us get this sort of inferiority complex. Which is why she's trying so hard with her accent. Having a British accent does not mean you are more affluent than Singaporeans. It's not the accent, it's the content that matters.

    as an SG'ean who is studying overseas in Scotland, i must say, i appreciate SG a lot more. Less racism, cleaner streets, better transport and more food choices. Also everything is so interconnected in SG, we have better city planning and design... The only thing i think Sg can improve on is that kiasu culture and being more open-minded.

      @hieveryone2003 Bro... people dont throw eggs on you on the sidewalk when they drive by. People dont scream at you to go back to your country. Or shout at you for speaking your mothertongue.
      I'm not saying Sg has no racism. I literally said we can be more open-minded. What I'm saying is that we have a lot more tolerance to people of all races. If you think SG is bad, try going to some of these Europe countries. They will literally spit infront of you or try and ban the hijab...

    • @creatrotera
      @creatrotera 9 месяцев назад +7

      @hieveryone2003 I'm sorry you had bad experience about sg'ean and racism. But honestly speaking, you haven't experienced how racist and condesending Europeans are.
      And I would say most of our younger gens aren't racist or definitely better, and they don't beat up old people because of their race like they do here.

    • @Minnn08
      @Minnn08 9 месяцев назад +2

      @hieveryone2003 As a Singaporean chinese, i’ve never mistreated other races before and doesn’t have recollection of witnessing it before too… I would say i’m very surprised to know that your personal experience says otherwise…

    • @Minnn08
      @Minnn08 9 месяцев назад +4

      @hieveryone2003 Relax, i’m not defending anyone who’s being racist or discriminating against you or your minority group. What i meant was literal. Meaning, i was surprised, literally.
      And I’m not about to apologise for any racism done by anyone from my race, simply because it’s not my fault to apologise for. I was brought up to respect individuals as they are, regardless of where they come from and what job they do. I believe individuals should be held accountable for their own actions.
      Maybe as a possible point of reference, several foreign employees in our small company worked with us for 10-20 years and some converted to PR/singaporean, our previous domestic helper was with us for 19years, and the current helper has been with us for 10years.
      Hope I did clarify things up abit.

    • @glennjinwong2006
      @glennjinwong2006 9 месяцев назад +6

      Actually I think not singaporeans mimic accents not because of inferiority complexities. I saw that as a possibility of more like a polite behaviour to conform a native accent in the particular location or person the speaking with, so that the could be understand better. Because they can easily and would switch back as soon as they are conversing with other singaporeans.

I didn’t even realise my accent had changed until my sg friends pointed it out. I think sg has lots and lots of plus points. But ngl, the fast paced, hyper-competitive lifestyle is just not for everyone. I’ve been teased for being a ‘banana’ by many people, but sg will always be home. Sad that quite a number of Singaporeans including our celebrities start NOT to speak and use our Singapore accent whenever they speak to foreigners and even locals. If we can write proper structured English that people can understand, why not speak using our Singapore accent too that we have grown up with. Our ministers speak to foreigners don't have to switch to British/American accent and yet still get respected with their substance, not accent.

    there are pros and cons to living in any country in the world, it all depends on your views and life perspectives. i'm not sure how long that girl has been living in london for but the longer she stays there, she'll slowly realise and learn to appreciate how much better singapore compares to london in so many categories. for instance, the old transport system and the fact that workers can go on strike as and when they please, sometimes selfishly disrupting others' day-to-day routines, not to mention dirtier streets and higher chances of dealing with racism. as a singaporean myself who studied and lived in london for three years and only just moved back to sg a couple months ago, i do miss the slower paced life in london where the workaholic mentality is not heavily emphasised and mental health is considered a priority, but overall, singapore is a much more efficient country and i really only learned to appreciate it while i was away.

    She looks like a teenager and may have got a lot of flak in the US regarding her accent growing up (e.g of Fresh Off the Boat Asians getting teased cruelly for their lunch) ... thus she ends up hating her own country and hence her answer. People are motivated to move overseas for all sorts of reasons, some including a dislike of certain aspects of their homeland, or a belief that their adopted country is better. However, I hope someday she will have a chance later in life to experience a positive side of Singapore. People from other countries will respect you more when you take more pride and self-confidence in your own identity.

There is no need to speak,act or behave like an "ang moh" just because you have lived overseas that shows you are immature and feels inferior about your own culture and identity, these kind of people really,really put me off as their mentality is too low. unpopular opinion: the judgy sgreans in the comment sections are the ones with inferior complexity. I have moved out of sg for more than 10 years and have no other sgreans to speak to most of the time. I speak mandarin chinese and english with a more neutral accent than most sgrean now, even when i am back in sg, no one thinks i'm pretentious when i speak good chinese, but i get judgy comments about my english 'accent' just because i cannot talk like everybody lahhh (mannn, im struggling).... LIKE, why.

    Broken English is very common in Singapore, yet, many locals do claim that they are native speakers. On the other hand, the Dutch or Irish (who's deemed native speakers by the UK and the US) would never make such a claim. Like someone mentioned in the comment, inferiority complex

    • @cocaineminor4420
      @cocaineminor4420 5 месяцев назад

      It's not broken English it's a dialect of English

      it's not the accent but the grammar, the defining feature of a language. In fact, on average Singaporeans only score 7-8 on Ielts test while native speakers easily scoring a 9-9.5@@cocaineminor4420

    I think a reasonable person wouldn't go as far as to say Singapore is so horrible. Sure there are aspects one can be very critical of, but on the whole, I think it's still tolerable at worst. Lol.

    🙏 With great respect to All Sides ... Those who only know on how to complain this & complain that of Singapore are mainly from groups that who have not suffered living under Totalitarian or Extremist Regimes that will prosecute their own people who do not follow their draconian rules or selfish political manifesto ... A lot of their citizens in these regimes being locked up for decades or disappeared just for voicing or fighting for their or others' human rights! ... 🙏🕯🌏🕊
