  • This is my user impressions and review on the Pulsar Merger LRF XL50 Thermal Binocular. I've had this device from Pulsar in real hunting usage conditions, multiple times a week for a few months so far. It's an amazing thermal scanner and well worth considering if you're in the market for a high end device. This isn't a "how to" video with boring unboxing and basic menu function explanations. This is my handle on the Merger as a shooter and user.
    If you would like a baseline I would encourage you to watch my review of the Merger LRF XP50 as there's a lot of crossover information I tried not to double up on.
    • Pulsar Merger LRF XP50...
    Big thanks Pulsar in Europe and Extravision in Australia for sending me the new Merger to play with. Without support from companies who are proactive in the hunting industry like this, these video's are mostly not possible with the speed tech is evolving.
    If you're in the market to buy an Merger LRF XL50 or any thermal for that matter in Australia. Chat with Ben at Hunt the Night. He generally has the best prices in Oz and sells all the well known and supported brands.

    Great review Nathan. Ive been trying to explain to a mate of mine some of the specs that are important when shopping for a thermal scanner and i did NOT do a very good job of it. Just gonna share your video with him and jobs a goodn😁👍🏻. You are very thorough while explaining real world functionality and yet deliver it so simply and concisely. And the novelty that you filmed this in a 100yr old shearing shed while waiting to head out on a contract shoot was not lost on me. Great job mate, much appreciated👍🏻👍🏻

    Good review Nathan. I tried these out at the Game Fair in the U.K. last weekend, looking out to 300 metres over grass car parks & people, thought they were very good. The only concern I have is when to actually buy a pair, as they make new models so often. Concern is that they get outdated too soon.

    Great review as usual, I always like to see content like this that lists the range of the animal being viewed. Are the XL's focus fussy? going from close range out to mid, say going from 20M then to 80-100M this would give me an idea what they would be like to use around farm yards and buildings etc.

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK
      @EDGEoftheOUTBACK  11 месяцев назад +4

      They are not all that focus fussy. But at 20-80m yes you will change focus as that's quite close.

    Thermals are awesome. They make harvesting safer, more ethical and cleaner in terms of shot placement. You are a true embassador for these useful tools. I have people screeching to me every year that "this is illegal" and making a fuss about the scopes. I always reply that they should remove their zeiss or whatever scope from their rifle, because in their logic- everything that lets you see better in low light is cheating. A high end scope (not thermal) will help you see in very poor light conditions. But a thermal or even a digital will help you to be sure and safe. Do please keep the videos coming. They are fun and very informative.

    After watching about 30 deer per night in Halls Gap in February 2024, I’ve gotta say, these binos are awesome. Keep an eye on Hunt The Night for sales of the device. Also, when you buy the binos, you gain enough store credit to receive 2 extra batteries for free. I found that if I leave the battery in the device, even though it’s turned off, the battery will flatten. Not sure if this is normal. Good job Nathan. Definitely recommend selling your house and downsizing, to make these binos affordable.

    Another very thorough analysis and comparison of the XP50 and the XL model. However, although it’s deemed better on an overall score of circa 30%, nonetheless, why has it only got 40NETD when the XP is rated

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK
      @EDGEoftheOUTBACK  11 месяцев назад +1

      Remember that there's positives and negatives to a 17um sensor compared to a 12um sensor regarding NETD. NETD isn't everything and sub 40mk is still excellent. It does seems a recent marking push in regards to specifications to get this super low but it introduces other issues with a 12um sensor.

    Hi Nathan, struggling to decide between the Merger LRF XL50 and the Telos LRF XL50. Do you think the twin-eye view of the Merger is worth it over the Telos, or are the smaller dimensions/portability and weight of the Telos worth it over the Merger? This is for all-day deer stalking in Scottish highlands, without use of a vehicle during the day. I could make an argument for each model; tough choice between portability and weight of Telos vs nicer to use Merger!. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    I am considering renting one of these two when I go to Yellowstone in April. My purpose is simply to locate wildlife. I will take photos of them if light allows. Will the xp50 detect wildlife one mile away, or do I need to rent the xl50? I don't necessarily need to see the animal perfectly with the binocular, but merely want to use it to find animals. Recommendations between either?

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK
