Thank you! Eevee still has some kinks to work out in terms of shadows and reflections, but it's good enough on most fronts. While Cycles looks better, I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the look for speed.
we need more shorts like this one from other blender users;its motivacional.this way we will know what you can do with blender(the animating shorts side,i mean;i know blender can do a lot of things)
Nice, some of the animations were a bit off but seeing I don't think ragdoll physics are possible or easy to do in Eevee(idk I haven't checked yet) it's perfectly understandable. Also the baby's animation could have been more accurate, it did seem too slow and a bit too 'floaty'. However the mech designs are on point, and I love how you animated their 'eyes'; and other than those few nit picks this is amazing.
Man, very nice film, I understand that this took a lot of times and efforts. But i really hope that its not a limit and eevee actually can do better than this.
Thanks! This was my first project in EEVEE; all the models and shaders that I had created before this needed to be updated for the new renderer so there was some learning curve involved for me. Also, this was mostly done in the 2.80 release candidate. I'm on the 2.93 release right now and it has so much more to give. I'm sure for my next project, I'll be pushing EEVEE even further!
@@Victory-Pictures I envy you for work you have done. The robots are just fantastic. But the baby... It's were like first toy story. I felt a little "uncanny valley" stuff.
Yes I did! I picked up Blender well over a decade ago when I was 12 and learned things as time went on. There were very few days where I'd be actively learning for hours on end and was on-off with my practice, so I can't say for certain how long it would take someone with more time and motivation. I really jumped into the deep end when I started, biting off more than I could chew (big ideas but no technical skill to back it up), so I never really finished projects I started until I was about 17 or so. If you really want to make short films like this, go for it! Blender is free and the EEVEE renderer is a little bit easier to run. Think small projects first, then expand from there once you learn more. Blender Guru, Ian Hubert, and CG Matter have great tutorials; some are super in-depth and others are quick and give you the ability to make things "good enough" rather than "perfect", so that saves time and stress. Have fun!
EEVEE is actually pretty good with render times, since it doesn't ray trace like Cycles does! But because I had all the subdivisions, particles, volumetrics etc. all the way up, it still took about 10 or so overnight renders!
Thanks for enjoying! I wrote a lot for this world including a draft for a feature. While there is nothing currently in development for it, I won't say with certainty that that window is closed.
Kat A lot of the work was spread out cause I made this in between semesters. I had the main robot rig done a while back, but I spent about 5 days doing modelling, textures, and layout, and 10 days doing the main animations. The fine animations, particles, and simulations took another 4 ish days. Then I spent about a week of overnight rendering, and then maybe 2 weeks of editing, VFX, and sound.
wow, lots of work there mate.. :) good job. how long did the whole process take? I am working on facial animation pipeline for blender eevee and I am very impressed with what eevee can do for characters if textured correctly. but opensubdiv is very slow in blender right now.. hope they fix it soon. great work!
All in all, from writing to storyboarding to animation to rendering to editing to sound and colour, about 7-8 months in terms of start to finish, not man hours. The bulk of production (animation and editing) was only about 1-2 months, split up over the span of about 6 months. Eevee is incredibly powerful for characters. I'm working on some other projects right now that make use of higher fidelity characters, and the level of quality you can squeeze out is great. You're right, but I just toggle subdiv on only when I want a preview, so it hasn't been a hinderance.
@@Victory-Pictures nice work and admire your patience. let me know if you are trying to venture into humanoid facial animation. I can help you with that. : ) working on facial stuff for eevee myself. : ) it's a load of fun.
@@Victory-Pictures ohh I see... the download link shows a file size of 20 mb for 720p... hence asked.. thanks for the reply.. please do make more animations its awesome...
Literally just an 8GB RX-5700xt GPU. CPU was an AMD R9-3900X at 4.4Ghz and 32GB of RAM, but EEVEE only uses the GPU to render. Still, the heaviest frames took over 300 seconds to render.
All post using Action VFX's Battle Box and Film Riot's effects (as well as After Effects w/ Red Giant plugins for comping). The only 3D element is the point light that toggles on and off with each shot. Smoke sims in Blender 2.80 EEVEE were not great. It's gotten better since, but even still they are far from what Cycles could push. If I were to invest in the fidelity that smoke sims offer, I would lose the speed in which I could layout and render. Embergen is promising, but I have yet to invest the time necessary to implement that into my pipeline.

I get what you mean! I actually had a few more intimidating designs, but went with this for a few reasons. Primarily backstory; this short film is a partial proof-of-concept for a potential bigger project. The backstory is that humans built the first robots as service bots for everyday people. They were not supposed to be scary looking. The company that made them eventually received a military contract and in the interest of saving money, they reused the same body design for their MK1 military mechs (the ones in the video). They updated their design as the years went on, but during the Uprising, these MK1s with weaker security were the first and easier ones to "turn". Also, the film was inspired by a piece of artwork by Kari Christensen called "The Last Human". It's not a copy of the design, but his design was also less ominous and more "friendly" looking. But if I ever expand this universe, there will definitely be more intimidating robots!
Between 1 and 2 months. Split between school semesters. Not super long, but I used the same rigs for all the robots so I could copy and paste certain animation portions. Also, I had the script and the robot models done in 2017, and many other assets were not made from scratch, so that saved me time!
