    I have to use chicken wire over the soil after I plant....because the squirrels dig it up...ugh. I put about 1-2” of crushed fall leaves under the wire. Garlic has no issue pushing thru the wire in the spring.

    I'm in Talladega Co. Alabama. Every year is different, so it is a crap shoot as to whether we will have hard freeze and snow or not. I just happen to have a bunch of uneaten garlic in my kitchen. It is probably soft neck, having been purchased at a big box store. I have it, so I may as well plant it. The first frost is early this year, Tuesday. Four weeks after the first frost is planting day, so about November 15th. We had a hot summer with summer hear arriving a month early, so I am betting on a long cold winter this year. I am prepared for it with hoops on all of my raised beds, and more than enough 6 mil greenhouse plastic. (Not the stuff purchased at the local stores.)

  • @masspyro5167
    @masspyro5167 2 года назад +1

    I mix my granulated fertilizer in with the soil and after I poke the holes for the cloves I put a little bone meal dust in each hole. I also put about 4-6" of straw on the bed over the winter.

    I always thought your area got cold and snow. Guess I better study a bit. lol Where is the best place to buy soft neck garlic? Can I just buy organic from the market? Oh, we’ve already eaten my first wave of radishes and just had the last watermelon tonight. I’m so so happy that I’m able to garden again using raised totes. My back loves it and I love it! It does for sure. But I can grow both. They both can deal with winters but soft neck does not need cold. It is not harmed by cold.

      If it’s not organic it’s probably got growth inhibitors sprayed on. Grocery stores don’t want sprouting garlic. Try washing them good or buy the organic and try again. I bought elephant garlic from a local farmers market and they all sprouted and are used to my area. Hope this was helpful!

    Well I’m in Florida, and it only gets cold here for like 2 weeks at most. So that means i can’t grow the hard neck and you just freaking said it’s the best tasting kind haha so since I’m in Florida, it’s always hot here in south Florida, so what you’re saying here is that I can grow the soft neck kind any time, starting any month? Like, I can go to the store right now, buy a bulb and stick a couple of cloves in a garden pot right now since it’s about to get cold here for a few minutes? The softneck one right? I can grow that any time here?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Месяц назад

      I would look up growing garlic in Florida. It will give you better details but you can grow softneck. Probably good to put any garlic you buy in the refrigerator for 4 weeks. That creates a bit of a could period and can help with bulb production.
