The Kfc I used to visit had a bathroom for paying customers only and one of the coffee shops I cost has a 20min max staying time even IF you buy something. Many a time I’ve ducked in a coffee shop to get out of the cold and they have asked me to buy something or I couldn’t stay there, even though they were nice enough to be polite about it. The manager overreacted by calling 911 and she was deceptive. In her 911 call, she said she had two gentlemen who were refusing to order and refusing to leave. She gave the impression that she had already asked them to leave, by an eyewitness account and the two men, she had not. She gave the impression that they were being disruptive, which they were not, they politely declined to order anything, there was no confrontation, no raised voices and she NEVER asked them directly to leave. Maybe she thought they were going to cause trouble because she had denied the use of the bathroom and they went and sat down. When she or someone asked them if they wanted to order anything, they said no. She didn't at that point tell them they had to order or leave either, instead she went and called 911. They were waiting for their meeting partner, who had in fact arrived by the time the police got there and was asking the police why they were being arrested. All the commenters talking about loitering and trespassing, that is BS. The eyewitness who taped the scene said she had been sitting there for sometime before the men had arrived and no one asked her to leave. The CEO has said Starbucks is for meeting and greeting. I am reluctant to immediately jump to racism because I don't know what the manager's motivation was. I use to drink coffee at a black owned franchise of Starbuck, but the pathology of certain members of my ethnic "black" group made it unbearable. I have a Starbucks story to tell!!!! I worked for the company in a small predominately caucasian town while in college. Almost never would I see another black person come into the coffee shop. While working there I experience a lot of racism and discrimination. I let a lot of things go because I was young and putting myself through school. When I first started working there I had to work with this mean older lady who was probably in her 40s at the time. I would have to open with her every Sunday morning. I remember her getting in my face and yelling at me telling me that it was my job to make sure that we had enough coffee at all times. "That's Your Job." There were more incidents as well. I started calling her Bitchy Barista. I even did a skit on her for my school project which was hilarious. I got an A on it. As the years went by I saw other white employees who I had seniority over get promotions and awards. I can recall a time when one of the shift supervisors left the store for his break and give the keys to the white guy who had only been there for two months. I had already been with the company for two years. Once again I let it go, and pretended not to notice. One time I covered a shift at another store, and had to train a new employee. The supervisor tried to put the girl who I was training in charge while she took her break. This time I said something. I never worked at that location again. One summer there was a young lady working there who I liked. She was white. We went out once and word go out to one of the supervisors. She became very flaky after that. I'm pretty sure someone said something to her about me. She ended up sleeping with my roommate who also worked at Starbucks in the same house on the floor above me while I was at home. I couldn't even look at her after that. There was another time at my home store when another supervisor had to leave once her shift ended and the supervisor who was reliving her was running about 20 mins late. She ended up putting this 19 year old kid in charge, and from what I heard him tell another employee, he told her she said that she did it because he was better even though he had only been working there for a couple of months, and I had been there nearly 3 years. I know for a fact that I was one of the best baristas there. I can also recall a time when they did hire another black guy part time who was in his 40s. He did not last long, about a week maybe. I remember coming back to work a couple of days later and asking about him. The two guys working there told me that he told them to Go TO Hell , and walked out. I'm pretty sure something went down that evening. I'll bet he had good reason to say that to them. It took almost 3 years for me to get partner of the month. One day I sat down with my store manager and ask her why I had never been given a promotion or partner of the month. I had graduated six months prior. She told me that she knows that I will leave once I find a better job. About a month after that they gave me partner of the month out of pity. It was delayed by a month also. After living in that area for 3.5 years I left and returned back home for about a year. While there I worked at Starbucks down south. It was a completely different environment. Most of my co workers disliked me. I'll admit that I had a lot of New England still in me. I remember one of the supervisors at another store that I was filling in at giving me a hard time that day at work. Strangely, that next year I saw her at a hotel in Colorado. She asked if we had met before, and that I looked familiar. I told her No, you must be mistaking me for someone else. I worked in North Florida for about 9 months until I was fired for not being able to find coverage for a shift on the weekend. I had take some time off in order to get the rest of my things out of storage in New England. I had been paying storage fees for a year after leaving. That is how my Starbucks career ended. I almost never go there today. It is way too expensive anyway. I always make my own coffee at home which taste better to me. I work near a Starbucks, and I always see mostly white people going in and coming out. I own stock in the company today.

Claims of creating the third space for social interaction, is a huge part of the Starbucks brand. They sell "come here, hang out, work on your laptop" as much as they sell coffee. So when folks in authority, including law enforcement officials, talk that "more training" bull-ish, (which has become the popular buzz phrase lately) it's insulting. They already know. Now these two men were charged with "trespassing". Lets have the police commissioner define that word.

When the police get a call that someone is trespassing, they are supposed to respond the call. If it's a fraudulent call, then the caller is liable. In other words, if the police arrive on the scene and there are no trespassers, whoever made the crank call has violated the law. One thing that is for absolute certain, the two men being told to leave did not own the business nor the real estate that housed the business. If they refused to order something and did not leave when asked, they were trespassing. I can remember once asking to use a Starbuck's restroom and being told I had to order something before being given the key. I ordered something of course. Restaurant restrooms are not public restrooms.
Homeless folks now have a free place to live with no purchase necessary, stay as long as you like and feel free to use free WiFi and nice clean restrooms!

The police body camera will be useless ..since we already have the personal footage start9ng when they showed up. The store camera wont have audio. but it will show they were there much longer than 2 minutes. But it may not show (depending on the angle) if one of the "genetlemen" in question had a pre purchased bottle of water in his hand just as he asked to use the bathroom. That is the crux of everything right there.

I actually think it was written in the handbook and said numerous times in our training video that Starbucks is open to everyone for any reason regardless. Which is why some homeless people do use the restroom and also why people choose to study there for hours on end. This was a blatant racial profiling from the barista, and it became a Starbucks corporation problem once she decided to get the law involved. Regardless if these “kids” were sitting there, with a Starbucks beverage or not, Starbucks WOULD NOT have had them thrown out EVER. When the Police arrived they still refused to leave and were subsequently arrested, well within the law. It had fuck all to do with their skin colour. The same thing would've happened if they were white.
But honestly, the worst were the police officers who arrest people for no reason. It's enough that someone calls them up with an accusation. No need for questions or verification. I use to drink coffee at a black owned franchise of Starbuck, but the pathology of certain members of my ethnic "black" group made it unbearable. The panhandle inside the business, start cursing when they can't have the access code to the restroom, and they steal all the condiments, and will go hang out in front of the property to carry on their nefarious activities. I have a Starbucks story to tell!!!! I worked for the company in a small predominately caucasian town while in college. Almost never would I see another black person come into the coffee shop. While working there I experience a lot of racism and discrimination. I let a lot of things go because I was young and putting myself through school. When I first started working there I had to work with this mean older lady who was probably in her 40s at the time. I would have to open with her every Sunday morning. I remember her getting in my face and yelling at me telling me that it was my job to make sure that we had enough coffee at all times. "That's Your Job." There were more incidents as well. I started calling her Bitchy Barista. I even did a skit on her for my school project which was hilarious. I got an A on it. As the years went by I saw other white employees who I had seniority over get promotions and awards. I can recall a time when one of the shift supervisors left the store for his break and give the keys to the white guy who had only been there for two months. I had already been with the company for two years. Once again I let it go, and pretended not to notice. One time I covered a shift at another store, and had to train a new employee. The supervisor tried to put the girl who I was training in charge while she took her break. This time I said something. I never worked at that location again. One summer there was a young lady working there who I liked. She was white. We went out once and word go out to one of the supervisors. She became very flaky after that. I'm pretty sure someone said something to her about me. She ended up sleeping with my roommate who also worked at Starbucks in the same house on the floor above me while I was at home. I couldn't even look at her after that. There was another time at my home store when another supervisor had to leave once her shift ended and the supervisor who was reliving her was running about 20 mins late. She ended up putting this 19 year old kid in charge, and from what I heard him tell another employee, he told her she said that she did it because he was better even though he had only been working there for a couple of months, and I had been there nearly 3 years. I know for a fact that I was one of the best baristas there. I can also recall a time when they did hire another black guy part time who was in his 40s. He did not last long, about a week maybe. I remember coming back to work a couple of days later and asking about him. The two guys working there told me that he told them to Go TO Hell , and walked out. I'm pretty sure something went down that evening. I'll bet he had good reason to say that to them. It took almost 3 years for me to get partner of the month. One day I sat down with my store manager and ask her why I had never been given a promotion or partner of the month. I had graduated six months prior. She told me that she knows that I will leave once I find a better job. About a month after that they gave me partner of the month out of pity. It was delayed by a month also. After living in that area for 3.5 years I left and returned back home for about a year. While there I worked at Starbucks down south. It was a completely different environment. Most of my co workers disliked me. I'll admit that I had a lot of New England still in me. I remember one of the supervisors at another store that I was filling in at giving me a hard time that day at work. Strangely, that next year I saw her at a hotel in Colorado. She asked if we had met before, and that I looked familiar. I told her No, you must be mistaking me for someone else. I worked in North Florida for about 9 months until I was fired for not being able to find coverage for a shift on the weekend. I had take some time off in order to get the rest of my things out of storage in New England. I had been paying storage fees for a year after leaving. That is how my Starbucks career ended. I almost never go there today. It is way too expensive anyway. I always make my own coffee at home which taste better to me. I work near a Starbucks, and I always see mostly white people going in and coming out. I own stock in the company today.

Claims of creating the third space for social interaction, is a huge part of the Starbucks brand. They sell "come here, hang out, work on your laptop" as much as they sell coffee. So when folks in authority, including law enforcement officials, talk that "more training" bull-ish, (which has become the popular buzz phrase lately) it's insulting. They already know. Now these two men were charged with "trespassing". Lets have the police commissioner define that word.

When the police get a call that someone is trespassing, they are supposed to respond the call. If it's a fraudulent call, then the caller is liable. In other words, if the police arrive on the scene and there are no trespassers, whoever made the crank call has violated the law. One thing that is for absolute certain, the two men being told to leave did not own the business nor the real estate that housed the business. If they refused to order something and did not leave when asked, they were trespassing. I can remember once asking to use a Starbuck's restroom and being told I had to order something before being given the key. I ordered something of course. Restaurant restrooms are not public restrooms.

Starbucks and other businesses must do better in hiring and monitoring the people they choose to run their establishments. Chances are this wasn't the first this manager at Starbucks had distastefully acted in such a prejudicially bigoted manner, and it probably will not be the last after some other establishment eventually hires her to run their store while passing up who knows how many better qualified candidates?

The majority of the white students were very studious and respectful and never bullied me! The police body camera will be useless ..since we already have the personal footage start9ng when they showed up. The store camera wont have audio. but it will show they were there much longer than 2 minutes. But it may not show (depending on the angle) if one of the "genetlemen" in question had a pre purchased bottle of water in his hand just as he asked to use the bathroom. That is the crux of everything right there.

They sat there for some time according to the story, not purchasing anything inside the business and were asked to leave. They chose not to and were then told the police would be called. They chose to have the police called. The police asked them to leave and their choice was to be made to leave in handcuffs.

I actually think it was written in the handbook and said numerous times in our training video that Starbucks is open to everyone for any reason regardless. Which is why some homeless people do use the restroom and also why people choose to study there for hours on end.
This was a blatant racial profiling from the barista, and it became a Starbucks corporation problem once she decided to get the law involved.
Regardless if these “kids” were sitting there, with a Starbucks beverage or not, Starbucks WOULD NOT have had them thrown out EVER. Starbucks is completely against this type of thing in any shape or form. The fact that this was video and documented is very good on the onlookers part. This was nasty and unjust and I truly hope that Starbucks is held 100% accountable.

Their company policy is that only paying customers are allowed to use the facilities, that applies whether you're black, white, green, yellow, purple or blue. When asked to make a purchase or leave, the two men objected and as a result the Police were called to remove them from the premises. When the Police arrived they still refused to leave and were subsequently arrested, well within the law.
It had fuck all to do with their skin colour. The same thing would've happened if they were white.
But honestly, the worst were the police officers who arrest people for no reason. It's enough that someone calls them up with an accusation. No need for questions or verification.
The most the police was supposed to do was to warn the gentlemen and ask them to leave the place. By the way, one of the officers was Black. What a shame!
