      Totally appropriate. There had never been a 3 in a row MVP who had not won at the highest level. Besides, they have always spread that award around to honor guys. THink about it. The point for me is, Bill is extremely narrative driven when it comes to these things. He considers himself a historian, and really his premise against voting for Jokic was that in history only 3 people had back to back to back MVPs (one was Larry Bird, the other was Bill Russell) and Simmons said he didn't feel Jokic deserved to be in that echelon.

  • @joeb588
    @joeb588 6 месяцев назад +5

    I’m not saying Wemby is DPOY, but to say he can’t be because of the defensive rating seems like not a great argument when you realize their defensive rating when he’s off the court is one of the worst ever. If you want to argue against him, you have to mention that he’s only playing 29 minutes a game, which is part of why their defense is only 23rd. So it’s really just an incomplete argument. Still, he deserves some votes with what he’s doing out there.

      Yes but Wemby also is taking a historically bad defense and has taken them to the 23rd ranked defense in the league, which may not sound great, but when you factor in this team would be miles below even the wizards defensively without him, and the fact he’s having to keep all 5 offensive players in site at all times bc he can’t rely on his teammates for stops, and so often being able to make the play when he shouldn’t be able to, the close outs, it’s undeniable imo. Plus, Rudy can play that way bc of the excellent perimeter defense that the wolves have that allows him to roam the paint and not have to worry about the perimeter. Wemby doesn’t have that luxury and is still getting stops both in the paint and on the perimeter that Gobert couldn’t dream of

    I can respect Ryen’s view, but I think the main factor of an MVP is wins. Otherwise, they’re not valuable despite the stats, there’s no results. Like, I was against Jokic’s MVP two years ago when the Nuggets finished 6th and left first round. MVP’s should be 1-3 seeds. But DPOY and Rookie can be more stat-reliant. You can have a top defense and shit offense.

    • @Smido83
      @Smido83 6 месяцев назад

      VALUE to a team should matter most. The award isnt called "Most Winning Player - aka MWP" If not, just allways give it to the best player on the team with the most wins... why even vote. 2 years ago the Nuggets wouldve been last in the entire NBA without Jokic (maybe 15-20 wins if they were lucky), with him they won 48. Lets say Tatum is out this season, the Celtics would still be fighting for Homecourt, means maybe 10-15 less wins.
      Yes, winning matters to a degree. Right now (as a lifelong Mavs fan) I wouldnt give it to Luka. If they finish strong and reach 50+ wins and the 5th seed, he deserves it! Cause he carried this team through the injury riddled months (November-January) with a constantly changing roster around him. Since they are mostly healthy the team is 15-7 since February 1st... thats a 56 win pace if you scale it up to 82 games... Not to mention that Dallas was 8-2 to start the season before all the injury problems hit the roster. OKC on the other hand had basically no injury problems all season. The starting lineup played 58 out of 69 games together (7 starting lineups overall)... Dallas had 33 different starting lineups this season (not one that played more then 10 games). So is the better record that SGA has more important without context?

      @@Smido83 I see what you mean, but take Embiid or Giannis off of their teams and they finish just as bad. 6th place is basically last place, especially when you have other stars finishing higher in the standings. The goal is a better record, and by virtue in theory, a championship, not avoiding finishing last. I’d say Jokic did a disservice by staying in and ruining their draft chances to improve their odds. But hey, just my opinion. Take Luka off this team and they’re total shit, I agree he should be up there. Same with Shai, his teammates aren’t offensively gifted to keep them in the race.

    If the offense isn't set up to get a player touches, that player's probably not getting too many points or assists.
    Same with rebounding, that depends a lot on team rebounding strategy.
    Having a big role (big numbers) on a losing NBA team doesn't help an MVP case that much.
    If someone's getting 50 a game on the last place team, that's really up to the coach.
