NBA has the worst officiating out of any sport, There is zero consistency. They will call something on one end of the floor and same thing happens 2 seconds later, it’s a no call.

Yep. All you had to was drive the ball to the rim and you would go to the line a good portion of the time.
When offensive players initiate contact, refs should just not call anything or call an offensive foul. This might be over-correcting by letting defenders now get away with fouls because they can't properly let offensive initiated contact go

Seems like a move in the right direction. There are going to be a percentage of bad calls and players (and coaches and fans) complain about EVERY call anyway so make less calls. Teams don't need to go to the line 25 times a game. Players, kick out and flop so much - I saw a game where Kawhi got a steal, one defender got back and let him go to the rim uncontested and Kawhi still yelled "AND 1" with no one around him - so just ignore them, don't call anything unless it's blatant. If KAT or any other player wants to stand on the baseline with his arms in the air while play continues at the other end of the court then let him.
There are going to be bad calls no.matter what. But there should be some consistency and we should not constantly reward the player trying to "draw contact" /flop. It happens way too much

@@fallenshallrise Years ago I don't remember nearly as many guys flopping and rolling around on the floor. And if they did everyone made fun of them and shamed them. Now it's like baiting the officials is seen as a valuable skill
Doing so near the end of the season is picking winners and losers. Teams with big aggressive centers are going to fair the best relative to no change in the officiating.
And amazingly…since the change every game I’ve seen has been more competitive and more entertaining….shocker.
Im so glad you guys brought this up. I thought I was going crazy, noticing the average scores of games since the all-star break being lower. There were a number of games where both teams scored less than 100. I actually love this. I like offense and the amount of talent in todays game, but offenses were way too over-saturated, and defenses were punished for simply existing. Watching over the laat couple weeks, I think theres still lots of room for improvement in terms of just getting the calls right, but I can appreciate the direction the league is going by allowing more contact. Games have straight up become unwatchable with the amount of fouls and stoppages in play. This has alleviated this atleast a little bit. Strange how secretly it was implemented though, and to Ryans point im scared the refs do this for a few weeks and then just revery back calling games how they normally would. Thats what happens every single time a new rule is implemented, theres a strong emphasis on it in the beginning of the season and then 2 months in we're all wondering what happened to that rule the refs were supposes to be calling?
I thought the NBA made it clear after the All-Star game debacle that they were going to try to change something and so they started letting the players play a little bit. I'm 100% behind it. As long as every crew is using the same guidelines and watching the game as closely as every other crew then I'm fine. Obviously that's never going to work out 100%. Let them play a little more defense and let's get the games out of the 130 or 140 point range because I don't enjoy that at all. Give me a 111- 117 final and I'm okay.
Yeah. Those zero defense just lets get scored on to run as quickly as possible and score in transition games (with Pacers as the worst) were just annoying.

@@bookaufman9643 yes. I totallt get this complaint. Not the "inflated numbers" because thats why you have other advanced metrics to figure that out.
But the teams that literally prefer to give up layups than 3s and run to score in the other side are just unwatchable.

Yea it looks ridiculous having a score up in 130's or more in a 48 minute game not even overtime but the actual normal game time.

I was literally saying this to my friends. It seems like the backlash during the all star break and for this year’s high scoring has definitely shifted the officiating.
I haven't watched a full game all year. I catch some 4th quarters occasionally. I grew up obsessed with basketball. The rule changes just weren't for me. However, i turned on the T.V and Knicks-76ers was on last night. I immediately noticed both teams were playing hard (which is also part why i don't watch regular season) but the refs were actually allowing defense to be played. I had no idea it was a trend. It's 100% the right move from the NBA. You can't let guys get mauled now, but you have to allow defenders to defend. It's not that hard to tell who initiated contact.
I don’t care what the league or media says, fans know: ask anyone who no longer watches the nba or isn’t interested in trying and they’ll tell you the reason is the officiating. Whether it’s absolutely insane rules that are hurting the game or refs egos/other influences making them biased when calling games. It’s absolutely out of control and the league is barely acknowledging the issue and instead putting all the focus on things like load management.
This is me. I love the NBA. I also find the NBA unwatchable and refuse to set any time aside to watch a game where a coinflip game is extremely lopsided because of dogwater-tier officiating.

I can't watch the regular season anymore. It's become all too clear that the officials have motives other than calling a clean game. Usually this is where I'd say "the NBA needs to do something about the officials" but we all know these officials are only doing what the league tells them to.
l don't get this mentality If you are an actual fan of the sport then your're watching it being played for love of the game Not so you can brag about how great your team is even though you don't like watching them.

That Cavs wolves game was insane, could seriously feel the shift of who the refs wanted to win in the second half
It's not even about who they would prefer win. It's about Vegas, betting sites and the spread. It's about the money and rarely about playing favorites.

The league pretty much directly addressed Ryen Russillo's critique of offensive players instigating contact on drives to draw a foul call on the defender. I'm sure Ryen seeing that.
11:19 these games being in rapid order was the biggest driving force IMO when these skilled guys are 60+ on a regular basis it makes it a non story. I remember a guy dropping 40 being a big deal on sportcenter growing up, now guys drop 40 without a highlight because yes they are way more skilled than ever, but the fact that officiating in certain games made it impossible to slow them down
It’s not as much of a story when 25 of those 40 points are from the stripe.

In the playoffs they always allowed more physicality. Maybe they are trying to make it consistent with the playoffs.
It's completely out of control! There is no consistency in the calls from night to night. Techs are handed out like Gatorade and players are bitching more than ever! Why doesn't the NBA fix this shit!?
I had the opportunity to watch many of the Nuggets playoff games last year live and the truth is that game to game series to series the officiating was different and vastly different than the regular season.
The Heat were so outmatched from a size perspective that very few calls were made, so Bam and others wouldnt foul out and the games would be closer for TV and entertainment purposes.
The Nuggets are the biggest strongest team and now have experience playing in that environment, good luck everbody else.
Nuggets aren’t that big. They have no real backup center. Gordon at PF isn’t overly large
When I bet NBA games, it takes about 5 mins for me to make a decision. Anytime a role player, Rui H, Terrance Mann, Etc, gets free throws the fix is in. Obviously Giannis, Steph, Lebron, are going to get calls but you’ll see role players get calls they typically don’t and that is enough evidence for me to bet spreads.
I have noticed the games being more physical as well, and I'm here for it! But, I did watch the Nuggets/Jazz game the other night, and it was constant whistles. It was slowing down the flow of the game and becoming unwatchable. I don't know if it depends on who's playing or what, but there's still the lack of consistency on the calls. Then, all these T's being thrown around. The refs are in their feelings.
This feels a little like the MLB changing the pitcher sticky situation mid season, players will complain but in the end hopefully it brings out a better brand of the sport
I think the "shift" started when DiVincenzo tackled Ausar Thompson in front of the ref and the foul was ignored. I've seen a handful of defenders just MOW DOWN three point shooters after hard closeouts... fouls ignored. If the NBA is looking to reward players for outright dangerous play, they've already accomplished their goal. Crazy.
A few days ago I saw Iowa vs Nebraska I believe. That game between women was way more physical than anything in the NBA
If we get to a point where other stars get as few calls as Jokic, then it will be an improvement. (Aside from the fact the Nuggets will just... never lose until he retires.)
Realistically, it will be mid players getting whistled for 50-50 plays in games that don't mean much.

yup. The Luka game was incredible. Scoring was organic, nothing forced. I think he went something ridiculous, like 23-28 from the field.

But if you go back and watch that game, the play after the ridiculous Gordon putback, Tatum is guarded and just falls out of bounds, get the call for FTs.

Easy fixes at first. Call traveling, traveling is out of control. Call fouls on people flopping or acting on the spot, also during the game have a ref in HQ review possible fouls on flopping and issue a non shooting foul later on said player.
Can't wait for them to see Alexander Walker play and talk about his defense for a week
Check out Rick Patino's interview with bartsool sports today, 3-11-24. For a bit he talks about a meeting with David Stern and other older coaches, where they allegedly talked about how to getting scoring over 100 pts/game. Their answer was to call more fouls. If this is to be believed, I think they just had another meeting where they asked how to get games down to 100 pts/game. I LOVE this new way of reffing - I have noticed it too, and the flow of the game is so much better and I don't get upset calling all of them 'pussies' every 92 seconds. I used to pay for league pass every year in college. 16-20. Partly because of the warriors, people love dynasties and their brand of basketball was alluring. I stopped paying for it because players were missing big games, specifically saturday matchup against rivals (Pop started it) and defense was being completely watered down. James harden and Trae young benefited from it the most.
What I love is that Adam Silver cares about what people think. They put a 65 game minimum for awards, and it is working. Players are missing less games. Now the refs are letting the boys play! NBA is making a small comeback and I will consider purchasing league pass next year!
Tyrese Maxey litteraly hopped with the basketball today out by the 3pt line and they didnt call travel. He instinctually stopped it was such a travel. No call, he just throws up a shot cause only like 2 secs left on shot clock
The way they talk about scoring 50 like it was something only the elite of elite did it in the past is funny. So many random people scored 50.
Damon Stoudamire, Michael Adams, Tony Delk, Brandon Jennings, Charles Smith, Corey Brewer, Saddiq Bey, Terrance Ross, Tracey Murray, Dana Barros, etc., etc.

@@seinfan9 BB Ref lists all the people who have scored over 50, so it took all of 30 seconds to look it up. The point is, Bill tried to make it sound like in the past scoring 50 was scared thing that only the elite players could do, when in reality lots of random players who you'd never guess would score 50 had done it.
His whole "the problem with the game is now anyone can score 50" take is just bad.
Referring needs each game to be reviewed and if a ref commits over 5 calls a game then an assessed fine should be in order . Ref calls are horrendous. I’m convinced that DEI hires must be in effect. When they show instant replay and it’s obvious yet they don’t change it. Or 4 plays later they take points away because someone’s foot showed to be on the line? You don’t see them taking obvious calls back later. Something has to be done ASAP.

Theres more talent and interesting things going on in the NBA since the 90's right now! They did go a little too far with offensive favored fouls, but teams have learned how to play really clean defense bc of it, which has complimented the high skill level. Glad theyre allowing a little more defensive physicality, it needs some of that, but not a reversion to previous decades of brawl ball.

They are not calling fouls on Joker,KD, LeBron and Curry since last season.But the refs for calling dumb-ass fouls on Shai,Luka and Young it was fucking unwatchable

At some point, if the NBA wants America to keep dominating globally...it probably needs to have officiating be closer aligned to FIBA
It's not even about egos or swallowing Pride: this alignment allows less "transition time" between rules sets, so there's less of a handicap to success

I like this change. I was watching the Kings vs Knicks game and it was PHYSICAL! I can dig it. Players like LeBum won't get as much attention for a foul crying all the team

The reason the league originally started tweaking the officiating is because the low ratings of the Spurs/Pistons finals. So if we see a Minnesota/Miami or Minnesota /Pacers finals, we'll see the same low ratings. The officiating isn't the only problem.
You can now run with the ball, literally just run across the floor without dribbling. As long as you seem slightly smooth in your movement, dribbling is optional. And you can literally dribble with your hand under the ball, hesitate for a while, and swing the ball in any direction you want. What used to be the Eurostep is now picking up the ball and running for a while in any direction. It's embarrassing to watch. I love the game, but you have to lie to yourself so often just to enjoy it.
The NY and LA teams need a boost. And they are generally the most able to get physical. So the league's answer is to change the calls. Let's not forget to mention that gambling has its tendrils deep in the game now.

It still depends on who the offensive and defensive players are.
My biggest problem is Adam silvers complete unwillingness to acknowledge a problem. He’s been such a good commissioner who is always on top of issues but I’ve seen him look interviewers in the eyes and say that there isn’t an officiating problem

Allowing physicality will be great but the biggest thing for me is just officiate the same on both sides. If one team is getting soft fouls on one end, you gotta call the same on the other. If they are letting them play on one end, allow it on the other. I’ve seen soooooo many games one team is getting way more preferential treatment and that shit is infuriating.
This change in officiating hurting the team with the best record in the NBA since the break is a pretty wild take.
Technical fouls are out of control. Players should be allowed to show emotion and hang on the rim for a reasonable amount of time.
All the cool stuff that happens now is immediately shut down by a tech. Makes the game completely unwatchable.

Yeah we all hate it, but it’s a lot to ask for from the players. Changing rules for things while they’re happening, I would guess is not the ideal way to make changes, even if the changes are overdue and exactly what we wanted.
Looking at freethrow attempts per game, the numbers arw actually lower now than 29 years ago which is the lowest scoring era in history. So free throws actually don't playba Role in higher scoring.

One of the reasons teams have gone “big” and moved on from small ball is teams realised they can get bs calls on the paint. Lakers prime example, they gave up on 3s and committed to full time foul baiting.
Adults have stopped watching the NBA because its just all scoring, it would be a welcome change if the NBA allowed some more physicality or at least something that defenders can do against the offensive player.

The referees actually announced they were going to change the officiating on defensive foul calls early January. It was on a press conference. You don't need to go conspiracy theory on this.
It depends on the players and teams, Lakers still get 30 free throws a game and you can't touch AD.
The league relatives everyone caught on to the rigging after that obvious raptors-lakers 4th quarter. League was getting cocky not even hiding it and getting called out by coaches and had to stop making it so obvious

Being to see a lot of the broadcasters starting to call out the strange FT disparity w the Lakers. The more people point it out, Refs can't be so blatantly cheating for certain teams.

The NBA has been unwatchable for at least 5 years, ever since they decided that nobody could or would be allowed to play D. With this year's All Star Game being the epitome of this, I think they're afraid a good portion of their fans are going to be permanently turned off. I hope the international teams kick Team USA's butts (the men's; I like our women's team, who don't have the same malaise), maybe that'll serve as the final wakeup call that basketball is both offense AND defense, not just a series of 3-pointers and layoffs.
NBA Refs have gone from BAD to WORSE ! They are so bad at seeing found or making the right calls . All a player has to do is run into a player from the other time and they get a Foul Called !! Every time , you can count on it , and the players know this . I'm tired of NBA Rules , I just won't watch the games and just look for the scores ! Everyone PROTEST NBA REFS !!!
I’m 100% for making the game more physical. If that means that these astronomical, inflated individual and collective numbers go down, so be it!

It will help the Wolves defensively, but Ant can get really rattled and taken out of his game when he feels he's getting fouled and it's not called.

The refs can be pretty bad. So many touch fouls are called then they aren't. I really think the carrys and travels have gone way too far. Guys are almost in their shooting motion, and then they put the ball down to cross someone up.
Also, a gather-step then 2 steps is okay, but that has turned into 3 & sometimes 4 steps.

I turned this off when Russillo said " the little player will be allowed to do more". A foul is a foul no matter the size of the player. Being small is a disadvantage. That is okay. Does the bigger player get more grace defending on the perimeter because he might not be as quick? No
