Before criticising the audience you need to understand the context. The venue in Newcastle Australia is a heritage listed fully seated 1930s theatre its not a rock concert.venue where people dance in the aisles. Kasey is pretty versatile and reguarly changes genres but Rap has not been something that has normally been on her list.. She wrote this cover during the Covid lock downs because she is an Eminem fan. ...Kasey has been performing for over 25 years and has been inducted into the Australian Record Industries (ARIA) Hall of Fame. Obviously most of the people in that audience know her music pretty well and would have been a little stunned to see her do a RAP cover My guess is that most of them have probably never even listened to Eminems original version..She did actually receive a standing ovation at the end of the performance I know that because I was there. She asked anyone with footage to send it in which is why the sound is good but the visuals arent that great..
Definately a great performance and I'm glad that I was there but its not the only place that she has performed it. The difference is that she asked if anyone had footage to send it to her for a video ... If you told me at the time that the video would go viral on Utube I probably would have laughed at you. . People have been writing her off for years saying that she was just a country singer and her type of music didnt appeal to them. Eminems lyrics about his struggle for recognition no doubt struck a chord with her which is why she is emotional when doing it..
So jealous! Wish I was there! On that note…seated venue or not, I would have been on my feet and groovin’ the minute the band kicked in! Always do it! 😜 Yep, I’m a 50+ year old Aussie with no boundaries when it comes to what is allowed and what is not! 😂
The original was full of frustration and anger, kasey brought out the pain and determination. Also, the audiences silence during that, was awe and respect for what kasey had done to that song
I think the lyrics fit this interpretation perfectly. This is her telling the whole story, if she didn't start the way she did, the end wouldn't have the impact. It would be one note and half a story
Eminem created an iconic song, but it took Kasey Chambers to make it epic! An extraordinary work of art from lyrics, the band, Kasey's passion and the use of audience phone footage for the clip. Of course I know the original, but this is the one that inspires me. G'day from Australia.
Hands down, this is the best cover of any song of all time. I love how she incorporated the rap cadence into a blues/rock style. A masterpiece, also as an aside, how bored was Kasey to spend all of covid lockdown working this out. Kudos to you, you are one of the rare reactors who got how epic the lap steel guitar added to this song.
It almost is for me. I still place Johnny Cash's "Hurt" & Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" above this but because of their meaning to me. This one is so good!!!!!!
This is a seated town hall performance, not a pub with a mosh pit. It was also the first time live so, her being mostly a country singer everyone was in shock. Epic performance but not totally unexpected. Kasey always puts 100% into her music.
No it wasn't the 1st time live. This is from a 2022 article - "Since debuting the song live at the inaugural Wildflower Festival in the Yarra Valley in March this year, Chambers has now performed Lose Yourself at each festival show and the 17-date Behind The Barricades tour with Busby Marou. The release of ‘Lose Yourself’ was recorded at the final show of the tour at a sold-out Civic Theatre in Newcastle." The Wildflower Festival was several months before the Behind the Barricades tour & as it says....the video was recorded at the final concert of a 17 date tour.
This was recorded at the last Australian show of Kasey’s Behind the Barricades tour, which had been postponed from 2021 due to COVID restrictions. The tour was to celebrate 20 years since the release of her acclaimed Barricades and Brickwalls album in 2001. I believe Lose Yourself was one of her encore songs consistently on this tour (it certainly was played in Canberra) and Kasey and her people decided to record it in Newcastle. I understand the audience was told in advance it was going to be recorded and it’s a theatre with riser seating, so not conducive to standing and going off! Kasey put the call out on social media for fans’ footage of the song to mix in with the footage that had been taken (most of the black and white stuff). Her dad, Bill Chambers, is on the slide guitar, and Brandon Dodd on lead guitar.
SHE is an absolute superstar as a musician, vocalist, songwriter & performer. Has been for a loooooong time & has a repertoire that would blow most acts of any live stage!
@@Amanda-uc5jq its because in Oz all artists have to earn their stripes playing live .......... they are not confected products of marketing & studios & labels ......... they play LIVE all the time

That is the general consensus! 😂 Hope Em appreciates Kasey’s version and the love she poured into it. I know his label allowed Kasey to upload to Spotify etc. and profit from her rendition but still haven’t heard any reaction direct from Em sadly. 😢
There was a comment on another reaction that explained her arrangement perfectly. "Hip hop (rap) artists are held ransom by their need to maintain the beat and fast pace. Kasey has delivered it like the 3 part story it is. Background of dispair and anguish of being stuck in a rut... The ramp up of conviction to do something about it... And then the climax of the battle and victory against his plight. After seeing this you wonder how it could ever have been done differently."
This was in a civic theatre, not a large venue; the fans were appreciative of her talent, and the greatest accolade is to stay reasonably quiet to take in the full effect. The video for this clip was compiled after Kasey appealed to the fan to send their phone recordings of the song. It was a masterpiece.
Newcastle Civic Centre only seats 1500, kasey asked audience members to send their video footage so she could make this video. I'm fairly sure this was the first time performance which would explain the audiences awe during the song. This is now on my driving playlist and every time is like total respect for her to completely stamp her ownership of this cover. Other notable covers by Australian artists are John Farnham with "Help" in 1980 and Zoot with "Eleanor Rigby" in 1966( a year after the Beatles release). Thanks for the great reaction. 🙃🙃🙃
She just leaves it all out there every time - so glad you've reacted to this. 'Ain't no little Girl' live at the Bluegrass Underground is another stellar performance.
Em 'may' have heard it (no one has been able to provide a citation yet), but he doesn't own the rights to the song, so he couldn't have personally 'licensed' this version.
It's not a softer "lose yourself" she's tapping into the pain behind all that pent up anger in the original, her version evolves and that frustration and rage comes out but it still comes from a place of pain that and determination.
I love it all, shows how good em's lyrics are and how talented Kasey is. I think the slow and emotional start makes the lyrics stand out and shows the desperation, but also is important to be slapped in the face when the band kicks in and full angry Kasey is released!
Eminem version is him just telling us to make the most of it from he’s thoughts. This version is from the soul, she’s explaining how sad it is to waste the opportunity, especially when you’re doing it hard in life. That’s how I hear/feel it.
It wasn't the first time she'd done it, she'd been doing it for that tour. But they recorded this version, and requested the audience help by keeping the noise low until it was done.
Where Eminem's rap approach is more reactive, Kasey's approach is more emotive. Kasey took the time during Covid lockdown to rework the song, such to the point that this sounds completely different; such is the difference between the original and her version, that she was given permission to upload this performance to Spotify in it's own right.
Thanks. Glad you discovered this. I really like her interpretation. She starts with the pain and ends with the anger and determination. The change-up is perfect: "No more games. I'ma change what you call rage Tear this motherfuckin roof off like two dogs caged I was playin in the beginning, the mood all changed". Odd incidental fact: Kasey spent the first 10 years of her life in the middle of nowhere on the Nullabor Plain. Her dad, on slide here, made a living as a rabbit/fox hunter
The theatre where she did this isn’t really made for rocking out 🎸 Or even standing up , there’s a balcony up top and your not allowed to stand up for safety reasons (low balcony wall and chance of balcony giving way if everyone jumps around at once lol) But there was a major connection that night Kasey actually said it was the most connected with the audience she’s ever been. I think they were in awe and that blown away that some probably almost forgot to breathe! 😂
I always get chills listening to Kaseys version of this iconic song. She dismantled it and made it her own in true Kasey style. She is a well respected musician in Australia. ❤
One of the best covers EVER! The emotion she puts into this performance is off the scales! Another Aussie as Sharlene said she loves reactions like this... your reaction of this was kinda the same as when you did John Farnham singing Help... 😊
Google - Australian 60 minutes Kasey Chamber and you will understand that she lived the pain of this song and spent a long time creating this masterpiece.
I have seen so many surprised reactors to this song and I've seen a few. Just a little trivia here. That's her dad shredding it on lap/steel. Kasey sure kills it... enjoyed your reaction.
Each time I see Kasey's performance of this I still get goosebumps. It really showcases just how strong Em's songwriting pen is doesn't it? Another thing that comes through with many reactions (including this one) to this performance is the comment on the audience and how still they are. If you watch through each of these reactors however is how still the reactor is as well. I think the audience, just like the reactor was absolutely blown away and just captivated by the performance and just trying to comprehend what they're actually witnessing - utter unique brilliance! The reaction at the end shows their feeling. I'd also say a banjo is pretty hard to bop along with, even when shredded like I've never seen anyone but Kasey do.
Love your reaction especially how Kasey's cover stunned you in the first verse. It made you guys speechless! Then the look of surprise when the band came in!
Best quote I've seen (from 'The Fairy Voice Mother')....."Kasey beats that banjo like it owes her money !"........emotional as hell.....Kasey makes us believe these are her words and her pain is real.................
One other comment..... Eminem didn't 'react' to this video..... but his response was allowing Kasey to monetize this song on Spotify etc..... which he has not done with any other cover..... that's says all it needs to say.....
The contrast is important for the final impact. The audience was spellbound, and rightly so. When you are met with a performance like that you don't want to be jumping up and down and distracting. You want to drink it in. Plenty of time at the end to go crazy - which they did.
Kasey has never been one to allow herself to be pigeon-holed to a specific style of music, she is a force unto herself; this is reflected in her 2001 hit song Not Pretty Enough, and is her commentary on the reluctance of mainstream radio stations towards playing her music. Her 2017 hit song Ain't No Little Girl tends to answer the questions raised in Not Pretty Enough; Kasey said this is the first song that "wrote her", it is the glue that holds her life together. She stated "That's a lot of glue!".
This is why Kasey is Aussie music royalty! She sings what she believes, no matter the genre or what the record companies want! Kasey has lived the ups and downs of the industry over the last 25+ years as a solo artist, but she has been in the industry from a very young age touring with her family’s band…The Dead Ringer Band out of South Australia. Kasey is also the youngest ever artist inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. What she does with that banjo is totally illegal! 😂
She was setting the scene in the first section to build up to the angry part. You are only the second reactor to mention the steel guitar (played by her Dad) that really carried the whole band so well done for that. BTW how can you sing along to a rap"song"?
Interesting take mentioning Ren and Chinchilla. I'm an Aussie and Kasey is musical royalty and a genuinely normal person. If you haven't reviewed the last couple of Chinchilla solo releases; awesome also.
It has been scientifically proven that people perform better when training to Lose Yourself. At a university. Love this, nothing like her other stuff. (no one says F@&k like an Aussie . 👌✊💯☮️

Kasey Chambers is an accomplished Australian country singer-songwriter, with many ARIA(Australian Recording Industry Association) awards for singles and albums; this change of pace performance of an Eminem song is out there, no longer that fast pace RAP song but a Rock Ballad.
The original song is emotional..that why it had the success it had. But maybe people focus too much just on the chorus , on the hype and didn't listened to the story , a story that sets the stage, that says a lot... to do it singing it took 8minutes , here you can here, listen to all the verses, have to.. can't not here them, so you feel the emotions she/he is houng through. In a rap ,so fast paced , In would many people dont get the full story...and that a shame when the lirics are so important to the song, and thats how a good rap is done. But the emotion is all there in Eminem rap original version, you just have to listen ..and not just wait for the hype of the chorus

To all the Eminem fans I think she is the only person in the world who listened to the song???? Kasey really loved this song she sang the first two verses slower as they were in the third person (we), the third verse is in first person (I) hence the voice. ????
Calling this a cover is downplaying it. It is so much more than a copy or adaption. This is a reimagining of an already great piece. Kasey is known as an Australian pop/country artist and has received many accolades. She started in the biz as a 10 yo with the family band. Dad still plays in band with her and is playing the slide steel guitar on stage here.
Shredding a banjo metal style to a rap song. Genius.

Kasey Chambers version hits you differently. Went from bluegrass/indie/folk to rock!
She was setting the scene in the first section to build up to the angry part. You are only the second reactor to mention the steel guitar (played by her Dad) that really carried the whole band so well done for that. BTW how can you sing along to a rap"song"?
Just so interesting and cool. 🤘😳👍
its not a cover, its a different song with the same lyrics. Shes lived it, that why the deep emotional connection, and you can feel it!
Brilliant 👏👏👏
Shit yeh. She kills it.... Did you see the nobs arguing over something Suz put up.
I've probably watched this 200 times 😍🥰
@@briangill4000 it’s just a fantastic reaction isn’t it ❤️👋🏻
@@AnnQlder yep, took them totally by surprise as it has many.
It can be done because the lyrics are so good.
Oh by the way Eminem loved it enough he Ok'd her version to be put on Spotify... This was the first time she'd ever performed it and the crowd were just mesmerized.... The video is made up of footage audience ppl filmed... She put out a call and this video is the result of many ppl's footage edited together..
This is made up. Eminem doesn’t own the rights to the song and CANT ‘give permission’ for anything.
@@markfoster74 no. It isn’t. The rights to lose yourself are owned by 8 mile style, a record label owned by mark and Jeff bass.
These are verifiable facts that should take you all of two minutes to confirm. Feel free to provide your own facts to support your position. A blog post doesn’t count.
@@markfoster74 ... it's weird to me that you would confirm that 8 mile style owns the rights, and then somehow conclude that that means it's up to eminem.
the opinion in the case you referenced refers to eminem exactly twice, and he isn't listed as a plaintiff. your conclusion is nothing but a non-sequitur.
the opinion goes on to mention that compulsory licenses can be granted without consent of the copyright owner based on the serving of a notice of intent.
in short, you should read what you're attempting to base your argument off before actually just posting it out of ignorance.
again, eminem has no rights to this song, and spotify has no obligation to seek his specific permission to stream the cover.
if you can find an interview where em praises the song, or kasey tells us she asked for his blessing - feel free. but you can't.
@@kane29842 well wait and see if they take her to court for copyright infringement........
And keep waiting..............
.......... ............ ......... ...
@@markfoster74 even if they do it has nothing to do with Eminem. You get that right?
Hi! The looks on your faces and the shock on them was worth watching 🤣 also the gentleman in the hat on the lap steel guitar is her father!
40 country and western awards and a golden guitar award
Hi from Australia, Adelaide. I love your energy and style to this song.❤
RIGHT!!! Like WTF? WHY AREN'T PEOPLE LOSING THEIR FKN MINDS?!LMAO the crowd should've been ARMS UP AND SCREAMING!!Epic!
They were asked to keep it subdued as the song was being recorded at the mixing desk & they didn't want the crowd screaming over the top of it.
great reaction!! I am going to see Kasey live in April when she is with Jimmy Barnes.
They are as stunned as you there first time hearing it
It works because she LOVES the song.
Another Aussie great singer you go Kasey
Kasey Chambers is an accomplished Australian country singer-songwriter, with many ARIA(Australian Recording Industry Association) awards for singles and albums; this change of pace performance of an Eminem song is out there, no longer that fast pace RAP song but a Rock Ballad.
Nice rework of an Oscar winning song.👌☮️💯
The original song is emotional..that why it had the success it had. But maybe people focus too much just on the chorus , on the hype and didn't listened to the story , a story that sets the stage, that says a lot... to do it singing it took 8minutes , here you can here, listen to all the verses, have to.. can't not here them, so you feel the emotions she/he is houng through. In a rap ,so fast paced , In would many people dont get the full story...and that a shame when the lirics are so important to the song, and thats how a good rap is done. But the emotion is all there in Eminem rap original version, you just have to listen ..and not just wait for the hype of the chorus
she's a country/folk singer normally.. I bet most of the audience were in absolute shock and a lot wouldn't even have known the song.. that's why the under reaction
It’s storytelling
I just happened to watch your great reaction for a second time. Sorry, can't give you another LIKE>
To all the Eminem fans I think she is the only person in the world who listened to the song????
Kasey really loved this song she sang the first two verses slower as they were in the third person (we), the third verse is in first person (I) hence the voice. ????
Eminem's song is defiant from beginning to end. Kasey's version is conquered... until it's not.
Brilliant.
You are in for a treat you just don't expect.
the girl goes hard in the paint
Her dad is playing the Lap Steel Guitar
he allowed this video go on spotify
Not one person did a standing ovation, I would of been jumping and fist pumping
G’Day our Kasey is Awesome one of our most talented songwriter and female vocalists! (Aussie’s version of Stevie Nicks)😅
Harry I'll think I'll join you❤
she is a country and western star in OZ
Calling this a cover is downplaying it. It is so much more than a copy or adaption.
This is a reimagining of an already great piece.
Kasey is known as an Australian pop/country artist and has received many accolades. She started in the biz as a 10 yo with the family band. Dad still plays in band with her and is playing the slide steel guitar on stage here.
Oz Music....................................Wish you were here !
