Nice to see many Wallingfordians replying here. I am German but used to live in Cholsey and I worked in The Royal Standard pub from 1996 to 1998. Sadly you did not walk past it, but it is seen at the beginning of the video, where The Five Little Pigs is a few houses further on, at the end of the road.

Oops, messed that up !! ... start again ...
A lovely English Town, I've been to the "Wallingford BunkFest" a couple of times, a music festival which takes place on a large green in the town. This included a river boat ride, which included singers and musicians sailing down the river on a hot summer's day, it was so hot you wanted to stay in the shade !! I did take a quick look around the town when there, and I crossed that famous 'chocolate box' bridge - but I never saw what you included in this video - I must have missed all that, so thanks for taking us around 👍👍
Keep em coming Mr Walk 🚶🚶😄😄🇬🇧🇬🇧☃️🎄☃️🎄☃️🎄

13:59 It is one of the entrances to Wallingford Castle grounds. The castle was demolished by Cromwell, so there isn't much to see. For us who were kids growing up there in the 1970s and 80s, the castle was a bit like Willy Wonka's factory; the gates were always closed and nobody ever went in and nobody came out. I think the grounds can now be visited (but I moved away and have never seen them)

The grounds can now be visited! The ruins of the castle are visible but are having work done, there was a pond near the front gates but it has since been removed around 4 years ago but it is thriving in the summer, all the kids play on the hills!

An interesting walk but you missed far more than you included. The crest of Edward VIII on the front of the old post office, the whole of the castle site, the Kinecroft, the Bullcroft, St Peter's Church, Jethro Tull's house - it's a place positively saturated with interesting history. You could do an equally long video just going round the castle site explaining what was where. Back in the day, Wallingford wasn't near Oxford and Reading; Oxford and Reading were near Wallingford.
Oh, and the impressive big gates were the gates to the Victorian house built on the site of the castle but sadly now demolished.

A few little bits of history about Wallingford; it was raided by the Vikings so Alfred the Great built walls around the town, some of which are still visible near the Kinecroft. The bridge is where William the conqueror first crossed the Thames after the battle of Hastings and built a huge royal castle. The castle stayed loyal to the Empress Matilda during the Anarchy in the 12thC so when her son Henry II became king he gave Wallingford its charter in 1155.
The castle was home to all the early medieval kings and queens at various point in time. The castle held out for king Charles during the civil war eventually falling to parliament. Cromwell ordered the castle to be completely destroyed so it would never fall into royalist hands again.
There is a great little museum which will give you much more info and worth popping in if you visit.

Head back in the summer, the castle grounds are worth a visit, there’s very little left of the castle other than bits of walls and a doorway but you can still see where the original mott and Bailey was before later kings extended it. There is a large area of earthworks that cows lazily wander across chewing the grass. It’s very beautiful in there and lovely to take a picnic and wonder at all the past events that took place right where you’re sitting.
Wallingford has so much history for such a little town. Enjoy!

Hi Andrew, I'm a current Wallingfordian. At the beginning of the video, you see 'Five Little Pigs'. This is a great restaurant. 'Avanti' is a good Italian and 'The OPO (The Old Post Office)' has a large menu.

I too am a Wallingfordian atm the pizza cafe (not pizza express) has a wide range of baguettes and pizzas, also quite cheap. The castle meadows roughly outside the George hotel are a nice visit too, the ruins of the castle lay beyond the entrance behind the hills, so if you are looking for a climb go for it!

Just watching your walk around Wallingford Neil, we've been there a few times, there is a camp site on the opposite side of the bridge just further down, it's a beautiful little town and there's a walk along the river (on the pub side) that takes you to a village called Benson, lovely video Neil but I just wish you would put your music back on, I used to feel so uplifted as you walked us around a place and I always came away from your videos feeling great because of it xx ❤️

I was born in Wallingford in 67 when it was in the Royal County of Berkshire; the hospital I was born in, St George’s, is long gone. My Parents lived in Cholsey at the time & that’s where Agatha Christie is buried. Haven’t been there for years but I know they’ve got a nice little museum there.
