Carmel Jewish College MOST EXPENSIVE BOARDING SCHOOL IN UK

- Carmel College was, from 1948 to 1997, a British, Jewish boarding school, modelled on British public schools. Founded as a boys' school, in later years it was, to some extent, co-educational, and there were a few non-Jewish day pupils. It was one of the UK's only three Jewish boarding schools, the others being in Gateshead and Whittingehame College in Brighton
Carmel College alumni are known as "Old Carmelis"; in 1973 the school was referred to as the "Jewish Eton by The Observer correspondent, Chaim Bermant.
The school was founded in 1948 by Rabbi Dr Yaacov Kopul Rosen; "there were about 25 pupils." It was first situated at Greenham Common near Newbury, Berkshire, and then at Mongewell Park near Wallingford, Oxfordshire. When it moved, it had "about 200 pupils."[3]
It was closed in July 1997,[3] mainly owing to diminishing pupil numbers and severe financial difficulties, having been seriously affected by the termination of government assisted places by the Labour government and the rise of the Jewish Day School Movement. The grounds were sold to property developers for an undisclosed sum. The sale was overturned by the Charity Commission, however, following significant pressure from parents and former students who claimed the land was undersold. The distinctive concrete synagogue, with its stained glass windows created by Israeli artist Nehemia Azaz, the dining hall, and the amphitheatre, designed by local architect Thomas Hancock, are Grade II listed buildings; the Julius Gottlieb gallery and boathouse, designed by Sir Basil Spence, is Grade II* listed.[4]
When it closed, the school was attended by children from the age of 11 to 18 - although earlier there had been a preparatory school which took children from around the age of 8. Later a girls' school was built about a mile from the main campus, although the buildings were never actually used for this purpose. Instead, it was turned into a junior school in the late 1960s for children up to the age of 13, when they moved to the main school. The junior school was closed down several years before Carmel, and the buildings sold. Girls were later admitted into the main school, starting at the sixth form in 1968. Daughters of teachers at the school had been admitted before this, including the daughter of Rabbi Kopul Rosen.
The principals or headmasters were: the founder, Kopul Rosen, until his death in 1962; David Stamler, 1962-71; Kopul Rosen's eldest son, Jeremy Rosen, 1971-84; and Philip Skelker, until the school closed.
Upon closure of the school, many pupils were transferred to another boarding school in Bristol, Clifton College, which had, until May 2005 a Jewish boarding house, Polack's House.
Typical boarding fees in 1996 were £10,000 per school term (i.e. £30,000 per year). From 1990 it was the most expensive boarding school in the country. There were many students from abroad, especially in later years, and some scholarships.
The school practised a mainstream Orthodox Judaism,[5] more Orthodox than the practice of most of the pupils' families.
There is a history of the school's early days: Carmel College in the Kopul Era: A History of Carmel College, September 1948-March 1962.[6]
In October 2015 former housemaster Trevor Bolton was convicted of abusing boys at the school over a period of 20 years.

I'm fairly local to the area, and i've explored here a few times - mainly the man house, but also have explored the pyramid and synagogue building. The main reason why there was probably a fair few cars on site is because it is mainly used as a filming location - they where filming for Black Mirror when I went, with permission to explore from site owner as an a-level photography project. They takes weeks/months to build their sets up in the interiors. And lots of materials and equipment hence the large number of vans. And it's not too uncommon for crews to live on site/in caravans/motor homes on site when its a large production (cheaper than putting whole crew in hotels for a month plus).
The "hall" as you refer to was the Synagogue for the school. Across from their is a the Art Block, which today is still used by a few local tradesmen for workshops - the site owner rents it out. Im also 95% certain that no one is squatting on site, and illegally living as you so assuredly assume. A few of the buildings away from the main house on site are lived in however by the onsite grounds keepers, and their families as those properties have never been abandoned! It isn't a place full of Polish immigrants you so adamantly rather racist-ly think! Inside the pyramid is just a concrete stage which I remember the grounds keeper when showing me was used as a stage for drama. As for the 'bunkers' next to it - they where just storage space for rowing boats, no underground conspiracy unfortunately!
Unfortunately the place is a hotspot in the area for vandalism, done normally in groups of rowdy teenagers. The only time i've been not allowed to explore when going too/ take photos was when there was filming going on - which was confidential - hence why security can be a bit confrontational at times.
Top info. Many thanks.
Great Video. thanks for posting. I was a student at Carmel, and it's a shame the school closed down. The 'bunker' is actually the boat house. There were magnificent 4's and 8's, and Carmel had a rowing team that would at times challenge the one at Oxford.
I was working on this site last year .. those people who live there live there very much legally !! .. they filmed the entire uk shoot of murder in Provence here !! .. it’s used a lot for filming .. so if your friends paid a visit and there was security .. that’ll be why !!
I used to live in the white flats opposite the swimming pool 6 years ago, such a nice place in the summer and really nice to explore, very hit and miss with security though, they do a lot of filming on the site, the last thing they filmed when I was there was The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep. The computer labs still have all the computers in them with books still open on the desks it's very strange like they had to evacuate 😆. They did have like a site manager who looked after the buildings there and rented out the houses on site but not sure what's happened to it all now. Did you get to see the church? Great video as always Matt 👍🏻
Matt,I'm sorry you could't get inside but the video is still worth watching. I enjoyed the drone work and the peacefull music. I loved seeing Angel, she was having fun sniffing around all the smells that dogs find so interesting. Please giver her a big cuddle from me 💖💖
Shes had a half a big suize bag of crisps this evening and was farting badly in the car. Still the cutest tho.
@@TheSecretVault 💖💖
That was a fun look around in the rain. I love your dog she really is an Angel..or is she? Ha Ha. If there people living in those squalid buildings, there were some expensive cars parked outside. Always enjoy your explores and the drone footage always gives you the full picture so to speak. Well done Matt.
Loved this Matt even though u didn't get inside still a worth it explore well done mate 👍
Matt absolutely fantastic place to see all those unusual shape buildings like the pyramid and wonderful to see a outside theatre
Great video. I was a pupil here. So sad to see how it looks today
I love the way you do your vids from the sky! What a place, and they say we're running out of space! Nice one 👍
Well Angel had a good walk even if you couldn't get inside. Vast grounds, great drone footage xx
I'm really looking forward to this one!
11:16 Once upon a time this was my school. The "hall" was actually the synagogue.
Can't wait to see inside this place!
That's easy, it's used a lot for film. Check out the following examples: The 355, The Little Drummer Girl, The Iron Lady...... So, yeah. Not actually abandoned.
That was a good one Matt. Looks like Angel was having fun lol
Nice walk. Thanks Matthew!
👍👊😎
Great video, I have often wondered what this place is like. Im going to kayak down the Thames to it..
1st class video to watch thank you take care💖 kind regards from me kenneth👈💥💯👍
Thanks for taking us to a most unusual abandon campus. I am not surprised there are residents there based on what you said about the Charity oversight deeming it undersold. It is possible those living there are serving as passive deterrence and are subsidized by some Jewish charitable organization. Lovely to see Angel again.
This was interesting. Can't imagine all those people squatting there with all the security they have around lol. Question: what do you mean by building being listed as a "Grade II" ? Have a great day
Grade 2 listed means its protected from being knocked down, or altered because its very old or historical,
Grade A listed buildings are the most protected, very very old historical buildings,
If they are fixed up or altered,
they have to use materials that were used in the original building, not modern bricks or breezeblock,
👍👍👍
@@roberthenderson77 Thank you

Welcome Elsie, hope it helped,

Hi matt and Angel lov the vlog Margaret parker
I deliver to that site and it is used alot for filming.
This video would be so much better if you’d done some research beforehand . Thankfully many assumptions have been corrected by other commenters. But there are plenty more answers and facts that would’ve made this video more interesting.
Indeed. I was at school there for seven years and could have told you what each building was when I was a pupil. The building with the sloping roof was the synagogue with three classrooms, it was also used as an exam hall and theatre. The red brick boarding house is the newest and was built whilst I was at the school, it is the only one that is accessible, all the others have steps to get into or around.
Opps sorry to tell you Matt, but at 11,48 you might want to use an "R" in one of the words. Other than that another first class Video as usual. Love to Angel
Yooo ..that's the pool in the movie Annihilation. That's cool.
Great video as always matt 👍
There are some interesting & unusual building designs on that site, I hope they can find another use for them instead of demolishing them.
Must be a load of do as you likeys living there by the cars and vans, good explore I like angels security harness , no wonder nobody approached you lol 😉👍
I live in the town that's outside of and my friends used to live on the site it's very interesting
Ello tricky Ricky
I used to work in the Jewish school in Bristol Clifton College 96'97
Five years before l used to live quite close to Wallingford!
Great video Matt. Do you know or does anyone know how I get a permission visit to this place and who I contact
Nice seeing Angel on a explore 🐕
I felt like U was being watched the whole time when u was there
Might be property guardians living on site basically people renting a short term room in part of the building(s) to keep it occupied rather then paying for security it is a bit cheaper than paying for an estate agent to let out the property
Another great video mate
Nice place..maybe next time it be inside like a walk in the park all access points open for just you plus one..
there is two army camps near the military railway junction at Ludgershall they look disused you can see on google earth also there is another large building near the theatre merthyr don't no what it is drove past today
Still great video mate
"come on then"
Interesting place. They may be guardians living there to stop vandals etc. Me and my hubby looked at doing that. They don’t seem like squatters or travellers.
People living in the housing are probably guardian's. Ultra cheap rent, and you are required to leave ASAP once the company ask you to leave. It protects the property from squatters moving in.
They are not squatters they are allowed to live their get your facts right
its annoying how he just assumes they're all illegal.
Probably the next location for grow bunker lol looks very instesting/ dodgy like proper tried to hide cars under the tree canopy or could just be the epic drone shots the way it's been captured
Why was it left ?
Your dog Angel is a better person than I am.
I spoke to your best friend and they confirmed this... ROFL...
What is and under that pyramid?!
The boathouse. I was a boarder there many years ago
@@Philbrawn how deep does it go?
@@thedramallama69 Just ground level. Any deeper would mean steps to get the boats out!
@@WifeMamaArtist thanks appreciate the info 👍
good video.
👌
how bizarre i was wondering if you had been here as its only down the road.
Good old British weather 😆
seems ashame to pull it down som nice building s there
I see in
👍👍
Strange mix of buildings - none that stand out to warrant it being the most expensive school!😱
Shame you couldn’t get inside - weird there’s been a take-over of people living in the buildings!
Good to see Angel - nice explore 👍
The reason it was the most expensive school was not because of the environment, but actually the cost of kosher food and getting religious staff to come out and work there. I think I have a tiny insight - I spent 5 years there as a boarder!!
👍
Very sad.
You missed the old fashioned red phone box
Dogs understand 🤣
Here's your comment I'm gonna get u grassed up. Lmao only messing oi oi
The sliver Audi that's parked next to black BMW at 24:52 shows up as being black. Untaxed,26 November 2015 & MOT Expired 22 August 2016 on the .Gov web site
Its not just the headmaster...I'm afraid the very act of circumcision for non medical reasons constitutes ritualistic child sex abuse...yet few people are brave enough to speak up about it.
@Al it is.
So that makes it centuries old ritualistic child abuse.
👌👍☕
It's like it's own enclave there almost cultist lol. Go back for sure 😉🤫
Got all the hallmarks of gypos matt,
The vehicles look like gypos,
Thier probably living in there, stripping it of metal and copper, and dumping building waste in there, from jobs,
