  • Madrid has rejected Mexican President Lopez Obrador’s request for an apology for crimes committed during the Spanish Conquest 500 years ago.

The vast majority of Europeans from Iberia (Spain did not yet exist at that time) were not soldiers of any kind, they were similar to settlers from Britain that illegally migrated to North America in the 1600s. In any event in the initial stages of the ‘conquest’ the warriors that defeated the Aztecs were overwhelmingly other local indigenous enemies resembling a civil war of sorts, not Europeans.
Ultimately it was Old World deceases that wiped out a large portion of the indigenous population, including indigenous allies, not warfare. So no, most Mexicans (and other Latin Americans) are definitely not the descendants of opportunistic mercenaries that arrived in the 1500s.

I want you and others who liked your comment to go to Spain and let’s see if you’ll come back repping that European side. No other groups of people claim their conquers... not the African Americans, Native Americans, etc,

Only when someone of Spanish descent says White people should say sorry for colonization, only then do I have to bring that up. Otherwise it's too long ago. We should recognize it for what it is but I don't hate over it until someone says like oh White people should have to apologize and it's like wait there were a lot of colonizers from outside of England so.

For four hundred years the Spanish ruled Mexico maintaining them in poverty, in fact Hispanic whites are still ruling indigenous nations in central and south America today, supported by the USA. Europe cannot deny the colonial policies around the world, Spain is no exception. What is happening here is the spirit of Pan Native awaking and the the Spanish population small as it is, in those Indigenous nations are on the way out. The conditions in all of so-called Latin America today was created by the Spanish colonial policies. I studied good history, and I'm thankful for how lucky I was. I'm a beautiful mix of indigenous, Spanish and Africans, and I am very proud of that.
In my opinion, the task has be in all those responsible who are able to get the power granted by the citizens to carry out a good management for the benefit of the people and in the same way they have to look after their citizens' interests. Then, they're who must take charge of continuing to building and improving the socio-cultural issue in our global community instead of striking it down through hatred and resentment. Well, if Spain must apologize, then the queue would be infinitely according to what the world society represented before and nowadays which is the fundamental subject for what is obviously a fact based on multiculturalism.
As for the political, it's simply populism and opportunism with absurd and petty ends.
On the other hand, regarding the historical approach to the world and for everyone, it must be a matter of raising awareness, because "whoever doesn't remember his history is condemned to repeat it." Also, promote knowledge and recognition of facts, and take pride in the great multicultural variety that exists today and represents us.
(The most important thing is to recognize and attend to the problems that exist in the world today in this period of time).
To start building a better and conscious world, it would be necessary to give the global community:
    1. Education, training and information.
    2. A health and educational system.
    3. Equality between each of the individuals who inhabit in all around the world ... That's the main point...✍

Mexico is demanding an apology, not reparations, which is what it should be doing.
An apology is just an admission of wrong doing, however this act will not repair centuries of cultural and ethnic genocide by hands of Spain and the Catholic Church. It also, doesn’t fix the sacking of national treasures and resources by the Spanish Crown.
The Conquista happened centuries ago, however, it’s effects are still ever present through its undying Malinchismo, machismo, colorism, prejudices and the never ending systems of corruption based on systemic racism and bigotry, instilled by a very white Spanish Crown and Catholic Church.
So an apology is the least, The Spanish Crown and The Catholic Church should extend, not just to Mexico, but to all the countries and indigenous peoples throughout the entirety of Latin America.
That being said, I agree with many who have commented, it is a distraction from the Mexican government’s incompetence and unwillingness to find solutions to these problems, problems which are a direct effect from La Conquista, this is something Mexico needs to address and Spain needs to apologize for through reparations or at least the return of what was stolen.
But let’s face it, neither party will ever do the right thing, so it would be better for the media to focus their efforts on exposing the borage of problems within our political and economic systems and thus motivate the people to mobilize and demand change for the betterment of both countries.

Much like how as an American, my percentage of English ancestry is responsible for those early illegal settlements like Jamestown. Not necessarily the people living in modern U.K.
Same deal. The Spanish who did this are in the DNA of the Mexicans, not the Spaniards in Spain.

Im mexican and im proud of both my spanish and indigenous ancestry. Its stupid to hate part of who you are. You will never be happy hating part of your roots. This man is just causing more division against peoples. Awful

I agree. Taking responsibility and hating yourself are two different things.

I can admit my colonial ancestry is negative.

But I'm not blaming a random Englishman for things that my ancestors in the United States had done.
