- You can do a lot of great things with rum. Make rum balls, soak a chocolate cake, pour it into a glass of cola, and of course, entertain pirates, but maybe my favorite thing to do with rum, especially around the holidays, would be to butter it. Enjoy!

I love this drink. I make it exactly the same just without the water, butter, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
milk instead of the water for me
Going straight to the source
Lol noice
Chug a lug

So cold, unbuttered rum?
Can we all give props to Chef John for remembering to let the butter get to room temperature for the last few videos? Seems like he always used to forget.
Be careful, Isaac F. You’re gonna jinx it!
Next video he's going to have to milk a cow for the butter.
character development!
@@cornpop8586 Precisely. I thought the same. Now he's gonna get him back for saying that... wait for it.. xx..
@@sunnyc4853 Ai ai ai ai ai.. pointing that out. Now for sure he's going to notice our writings. We are in trouble. There surely be a "butter story" in the next video... just watch.. He-he! ♡♡♡ xx..
"on a scale how healthy is this?"
"Healthy? i think we need more butter"
Julia Child likes this comment.
“More butter” is the appropriate French response.
I'll take butter over nasty soybean oil - works for the french!
There is very little butter in each mug.
Given that it’s mostly hot water, and hot water is considered healthy, I think this must be mostly healthy too.
That’s how it works, right?
I laughed so hard at "hot ruttered bums"
RAGGY
When he mentioned the pine cones, I legit thought he was grating a pine cone onto the drink!
I did too!! Great minds!! 😂👏🏼
me too! lol
Same 😂
Yummy
Me too!! hahah
"and you can garnish it with a little grated nutmeg if you like."
*Jon Townsend has entered the chat...*
Sounds about right.
join me as we enjoy the flavors of the 18th century...
@@MurderMostFowl Let's not forget, those aromas!
Susan Miller you’re right! I knew I was forgetting part of it :)
I’m actually making this tonight specifically as an afterward to a Townsend’s recipe. Too funny!
Chef John: Pack that batter into ice cube trays before freezing, the size is perfect!
Size doesn't matter.
@@kinjunranger140 That's what she told you. It must be love!
If you pack that butter batter into a tray, it gets better, not more bitter.
@@xurx2838 hahaha 29 years of marriage yesterday. :-)
@@kinjunranger140 Congratulations!
You can freeze the butter batter in ice trays then pop out the cubes & put in freezer bags.
When youre ready to make your drink just pop a cube into your glass.
I make flavored butters this way for cooking & it works great!
“Is the heavy cream optional?”
Chef John: “Yes, but actually no”
yesn't
..I am the "Pa-ra-pa-pum-pum" of my hot, buttered rum! :)
👏🏼😂
Comment of the day on chef John's channel 👏
👏👏👏😄
Bravo
Well done
I used to put Chef John's recipes in a Recipes playlist. Now I put them in a Chef John playlist.
I made this without the cream, water, butter, vanilla, sugar, salt, and spices.
Delicious
so... rum with salt?
and sugar
Sounds absolutely disgusting
That made me giggle!
Dark rum is sweet so drastically reduce the sugar.
"Fun fact, this drink actually dates back to colonial times, and what you're going to do with that info I have no idea"
Share it with my ESL students actually, sounds like a fun random fact they'd like to know! Cheers Chef John.
I would do the same but my ESL students are children
Thanks, Andrew!
id win bar trivia with it but thats just me.🙂
Estonian sign language?
@@bobby_greene English Second Language, i think
If you drew out his vocal inflections on paper, it'd look like a sine wave. That being said, it's as soothing as hot buttered rum.
Chef John, you've done it again. As we settle in to watch our 28th year of It's a Wonderful Life (A tradition we've passed down to our Son) we are sipping on our first batch of Hot Buttered Rum. Absolute PERFECTION! Life IS wonderful ❤
This Christmas needs to be special after all that has happened this year. Thanks for this special recipe Chef John! ❤️
That really nice friends ❤️
and 2021 and 2022...here's to a better 2023 and a big hot buttered rum Celebration for 2023 Xmas!
Chef, this is one of my favorite videos of yours. It is especially helpful that you talk about refrigerating and freezing since so many of us will be alone or apart from family this year. Great video, I plan on sharing with my family so we can all try this together and gather online to taste. Thank you
you truly are the best chef john it's insane how much more comforting you are than all the current youtube chefs
The caddyshack callback made my day. It's a Cinderella story.
chef John is the OG chef youtuber and im so glad he's still going strong
My parents used to make this for their Christmas parties, back when everyone put on their party clothes and went from house to house. They used a combination of butter, sugar, spices and whipped cream. They kept the topping in the fridge or on ice. My sister and i used to sneak spoonfuls of it when we were little, of course that was before we used to sneak the rum in later years ;).
Thanks for the memories!
You can get fooled into drinking about ten of them- "Hummm I'll try one just for the holidays."
Chef John, you’ve done it again. This recipe is solid! The touch of heavy cream is key. I also like your hot water half fill, stir and top off technique. It works great
This drink is what I always imagined butter beer to taste like. Even though the name is butter “beer” I always imagined it was a hot buttery sweet alcoholic beverage 😅
Look up how to drink butter beer it's very good and has a similar vibe to this
Lovely recipe 👌🏻Greetings from Scotland ♥️ Have a lovely day everyone 😍
Greetings from Pueblo Colorado. 🐓🌻🐓🌻🐓
Oh wow, thank you. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Literally drinking my first mug of it now. This is the whole of Christmas sorted. :)
"It's optional... but I think mandatory..."
I've always used the premade mix on the yellow tub from the store. It never occured to me to make my own but it looks so easy and way more delicious!
Just made this. Wow. Never had it before, but it will be a holiday fav from now on! Thanks John!
Love you Chef John. You make the best drinks & food
Enjoying a warm cup of this loveliness now . Thanks to you Chef John.
Excited to see this! I never had a real recipe for this, just added a pat of butter to some rum and milk, maybe with a cinnamon stick or dash of nutmeg. It wasn't great, so haven't made it in years and years. Now I see why it became a classic (my version was not up to that standard). This recipe is definitely coming back into my repertoire!
And yes, dark rum!
It’s always been my favorite. It’s so comforting.
Thank you for everything you do.
This is when you turn the playback speed down to 0.5x. Trust me on this one. It's so appropriate.
He sounds drunk 🥴
YES.
This is amazing. Thank you for this. Seriously even just the first minute is worth the 0.5 play!!
OMG I almost died laughing. I had to stop the video 30 seconds in because I couldn't breathe anymore I was laughing so hard!
OMG!!!!!
I swear to god, when Chef John said 'followed by an array of our favorite holiday spices' at 0:47 , I was sure there will be a pinch of cayenne in there! Huge disappointment!
Thought exactly the same
It couldn’t hurt, right!
Do it! I will
use what ever spice you want. You are the Vincent Price of how you use your spice
@@92bagder good one- best I could do - “you are the Moshe Dayan of your cayenne”
made this tonight, delicious thanks chef john!
I just got an espresso machine with a steam wand, and adapted the recipe to take advantage of that. I replaced the hot water with cold milk and omitted the cream. I just dumped everything in my frothing pitcher, and frothed it like I was making a latte. It was AWESOME. Definitely making them for our Christmas Eve party, I can't wait!!!
Thank you! You are the best!
Yes, I use butter as insulation, too.
It's snowing again, and I just made this as a winter warmer -- it is amazing!!! 🤩
This guy speaks in such an interesting way.
This was sooo good! I had some dark spice rum in the cupboard for I don't know how long, so I whipped this up for my husband and myself to unwind after a long week on a cold night, and we both loved it!
Don't know that my family and I could thank you enough for all your shows. But I shall try, thank you Chef John!
Chef John, made the Hot Buttered Rum on Christmas night and it was wonderful. We did Enjoy.....
Just made this. It's amazing!
Made it using eggnog instead of cream and I have to say it was a success! Awesome drink!
This is my favorite video of yours. Your personality is so playful and relatable
One of the best if not the best hot cocktails invented. Perfect for the cold weather of the holidays, but good any time of year.
Happy holidays Chef John.you always put a smile on my face.....
Thank you, Chef John. We all need a drink this Christmas.
I enjoy listening to you!
Your channel is great, thanks for all the education!
Nice comforting winter drink
Finally. The sequel to my egg nog addiction.
Lmao
I've been making Chef John's egg nog every year for the past few years. Might have to give one of these a stab this year too.
One of my favorite all time drinks. It really warms the cockles. 🎄🥰🎄
Thanks for this channel. There's always something valuable and informative.
You are, after all, the crazy nutter of your sweet compound butter...
LMAO!
bravo
Just made this, never heard of it before, not sure whether it's well known over here in the UK, but it should be!!! Absolutely delicious. I made it with molasses as it was all I had in, but worked really really well.
Velvety, buttery, warningly well spiced gorgeousness.
Family and I tried this! It was sooo good. Normal butter worked just fine, subbed out cloves for allspice, and did milk instead of cream. Those of us more sensitive to alcohol did two tbs of rum.
"Spatulation" is now my favourite word.
Love you, chef john!
Good drink! My wife and I love it! Thanks for the recipe.
Looks delicious! Thanks Chef! Merry Christmas! 🎄 😃
Thank you. Generally succinct and direct with necessary understanding of the dish to make personal variations very successful. Very best for holiday. Season and beyond.
looks great!
cant wait to try it!
Chef John, you are a national treasure!
I enjoyed being the Scottie Pippen of my hot buttered rum holiday sippin'!
Cheers Chef, I am making that tonight to celebrate the new year!!
I always speed up other cooking videos but not chef john. Chef John's got a special place out there
This one you’ve gotta slow down to half speed - you’ll fall off the couch laughing. Really, try it, it’s hilarious 😂
Loved your video instructions, and can’t wait to try this drink. I recently discovered a nifty kitchen trick by placing a silicone pot holder on the counter and use it to keep my bowl in place when mixing by hand.
Looks tasty! Totally have to try it!
Sounds delicious.... Thank you!
For some reason the extra "garnish" at the end made me chuckle out loud and I don't even think it looks bad! It must be the giant stick!
Just tried it. Wonderful little drink here. I expected it to be much heavier, but instead it is lifting, spicy, and warming. Perfect winter drink.
Can’t wait to try
Well, I was looking for a reason to drink more. Off to the store!!
Just made this and it is great..... 👍
Thanks Chef John and Merry Chrustmas. 🎅
Yaaaaaaaaasssss!!! Doing this TONIGHT
Chef John your speaking voice and quick wit are as entertaining as your visual content! Well done, Chef. Just subbed. 🇺🇸
Chef John you are such a delight. Been a fan of yours for years. You are after everything, the cream of the crop and the sweet cherry on top. You are the best. Much love from Pueblo Colorado. 🐓🌻🐣🌻🐓🌻🐣🌻🐓
Just saw this on The Watcher and now the recipe is here! Didn't know about it until now. Thanks!
Perfect, absolutely perfect caddyshack line!!!
Excellent!
Happy holidays John!
Not that I would ever want to be that guy who makes multiple positive comments on the same recipe, on different dates, but here I go. You might also like, as a serving/presentation option, to froth some half and half, wth an espresso type steamer wand, and then pour the mixed, and almost complete creating, into or on top of the frothed half and half for a light and beautiful warm cozy and oh so excellent option for a night cap. You might also froth the creamish thing with a sprinkle of cinnamon in the half and half, and maybe a touch of honey. Just sayin. Thank you so much for all your work We love being so entertained while watching, then making, and finally enjoying so many of your recipes.
This guy's voice took me on a rollercoaster
Yummmmmm. This is exactly what I wanted!
Well, can’t wait to try this!
"Nice" Caddyshack reference chef.
Looks good chef john
I love the set up, really comforting, I actually put butter in my cocoa so this drinks cool.
"Yes, the rum is gone. Why is the rum gone?"
#justiceforjhonny
this was great!
So rich so good with an array of all the holiday spices. “ So please don’t press to hard on the grater”. ☕️🫖
I've only found this drink in northern states around the holidays and had trouble finding a recipe so thanks for this!
I'm buzzed from this video... Cheers Chef! 👍😍🥃
Happy Holidays
Thank you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a recipe for hot buttered rum, before. Definitely something I’ll want to try for my holiday Christmas party - next year, where a pandemic isn’t ravaging the Earth. And, assuming we are all still here, as a species, to celebrate, I’m sure it will be a hit. I like the old-fashioned dishes at Christmas.
I want to hear you speak forever. I just love it!
