  • In this video I use a sink tip fly line to fish deeper for bass that are hiding from the summer heat and the recreational boats that drive them deeper.
Fly fishing in the heat of the summer for bass on lake Allatoona in Georgia, a heavily used public reservoir can be tough. Spotted bass seek cooler water and better shelter. One way that they do this is by moving deeper. This creates problems for fly fisherman that are used to fishing a floating line on or near the surface. Learning to use sink tip or full sinking lines can make all the difference between a tough day and an enjoyable outing. I love watching a fish blast a topwater popper, but the yank you get when stripping a fly deep can be electrifying. I have fished with sinking lines as deep as 30 feet. But often, fish holding deep just need you to meet them halfway. In this video, the fish were holding an average of 12 feet deep. So getting the fly down was imperative. Many of these fish rose up to 6 feet to take my fly. This video is strictly showing spotted bass being caught, but I often use the same techniques to catch stripers, wipers (or hybrids) , white bass, largemouth bass, and even catfish. In the saltwater, this technique is even more important. Everything that eats a baitfish can be caught using a sinking line technique.

He dropped a load just as I was finishing the video. Little bastage. Payback for not taking him with me.
