Solo in Guatemala's Most Violent Cartel Hood! (Zone-18)🇬🇹

- Guatemala City is divided into different zones. The biggest and most violent is Zone 18. It is fully controlled by gang members (Mara 18) and every local I asked warned me not to visit this place at all. Not even its small central market.
I fully respect their advice which is for my own good, but I am very curious to see with my own eyes what this Hood Cartel looks like and most importantly what the locals there have to say about the most dangerous place in Guatemala City.
Let's see.....

I think the gangs were actually scared of you
Timmy K just throws out some reggaeton lyrics and everyone starts dancing, smiling and singing. It's his best defense against any troubles he comes up against.
because they know that I know You
We are waiting for your Guatemala videos as well kind sir. 👍🏾
Bro both of yous need to make some videos together it
Would be wicked I recon yous would make great content together
Hey when are you heading to Guatemala Kurt?
I'm from Guatemala and zone 18 is one of the poorest and most dangerous areas in the entire city, the good thing is that nothing happened to you, regards.
Wow so u live there! So much respect for all the people who live in these tough areas bro and still trying to make a living with legal ways!! They deserve our applause 👏❤️
@@TimmyKarter The bad reputation of zone 18 is that some 10 or 15 years ago, the most dangerous and extortionist gangs met there, there were also deaths there

My grandma lives in Zona 18 so as a kid i wouldnt know how dangerous it actually was and it was only recently when i went back to visit as an adult that i realized how bad it can be. Mind you ive been there multiple times and i never experienced anything bad in the zone but ive heard stories from my family. Still, love going back because the good people which make up a majority of the population there make it worthwhile
What actually happens?
@@pencil6965yeah same I want to know. I live in the states and I have family that lives in that zona
Me too
What happens please tell us
@@Kawsarmiah bit late but my uncle would tell us a story of when he and his friends were caught in a shooting where 3 of his friends ended up passing just on the corner of my grandmas house. My family also had guns pointed at them right outside my grandmas house. I was there for that but being a kid I was in the back playing around so i didnt see it but it was a very traumatic experience to see everyone panicking while me not knowing what was happening
i 'm from the u.k-lived in Guatemala for 10 yrs-i got held up twice at gunpoint in the 'nice areas' (z 14, z7, )of the city. My girlfriend was extorted by a gang too - they followed her, knew about her job, family members and we had to leave the country. i have business owner friends in Antigua who have also had extortion problems and also children kidnapped. i lived close to the centre in z2 and regularly heard guns being fired in the distance in the invaded territory land where the gangs rule. The children have little opportunity to education and the gang life can look glamorous to some of them. i'm sure you were probably watched by informants in z18 and thats why people would not talk to you. the police are powerless to these gangs and even have to buy their own bullets for their pistols. its a sad reality because the country and people are wonderful as you have encountered.
The city will always be sketchy. All crowded places are sketchy
It is because they are the most famous areas of the country, extortionists and gang members look for those areas to rob, but the most forgotten places in Guatemala hardly anything happens
Zona 7 ? no way you got robbed at gun point in the day time.
Jace • 💚 IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU JUST INVENTED THE "WHEEL" ALL OVER AGAIN!
THERE ARE CHILDREN BEING KIDNAPPED IN CANADA AND USA...ROBERIES IN CHICAGO AND OAKLAND CALIFORNIA!
HAHAHAHA...😝
Zona 7? Really?
You're crazy man. Being a local living in a dangerous area you know exactly where to avoid and where to watch yourself and where it is okay. So many locals told you where not to go and you ignored them. It's one thing if you hanging with a local, but by yourself holding a camera "that's nuts".
No guts No glory amigo
Probably it is bro - can’t say the opposite haha but I was so curious to see how this place was! But I don’t need an applause neither negative judgment- i m 100% responsible for what i choose to do!!🙏🏼🔥🙏🏼

The gangs are scary but not as scary as eating ground meat from street vendors. My wife grew up in Nicaragua and even after we moved back to the US she would never eat ground meat, saying it could be ground rat, dog, cat or anything else.
ground human ..in those parts.
Soy guatemalteco y estaba asustadísimo viendo este video 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bro you got balls man, glad you're alright and glad you enjoyed our little big guate, stay safe brother and keep grinding!
I respect what you said at 13:00, I respect your observation. And the fact that you walked out of that market into the street.

I ended up spending so much time in the city, female solo British traveller with limited Spanish. I heard all the warnings and at times felt really outta my depth but people are people everywhere. Most people just on their grind tryna get by. I was careful, as you would be anywhere but at anyone with integrity and a smile and a passion for their culture and most times you’ll be ok. Risks are worth taking. Guatemala is my favourite place on earth. I’ll be forever grateful for the locals I met along the way xxx
Try living next door to the SOBs. Noisy and rude as f^ck.
Enjoying your videos Tim. I was born in Guatemala and grew up in Zona 18 y Kennedy where my brother and some family still lives. My brother is a teacher and even though he can easily move somewhere safer in Guatemala he's gotten used to living in Zona 18 for 45 + years. It's somewhere I've only been back to 3 times since I left in '88. I definitely never film or on my cell when I'm there. Sadly the people are right but there's a lot of honest working people there like the gentlemen that sold you that delicious Shuco :)
I’m from Guatemala 🇬🇹 zona 🛑18 Alameda Norte and I moved to the United States when I was 11 because of all the gang violence and no future for people like me that come from those neighborhoods. I’ve been searching everywhere on RUclips to see who had the balls to do this and I’ve never expected a white boy overall. 😂💯💯🤝💯💯🫡 much love to this channel just be careful whenever you out there doing this kind of stuff and props to you for having the balls to do it and also thank you for letting me see those streets that brought so much joy because of my love once and all the memories but also so much pain because I got to see the raw, cruel side of this world at a very early age they made me mature, and now that I live in the United States, it feels like I’m not even my own age because of the mentality that it was in bedded in me since childhood
😔❤️🇬🇹 🙌💯
I am from Guatemala… he is very lucky he did not get robbed I love his videos but please don’t let this boost your confidence.. I have had family robbed and kidnapped simply for the phone they had… of course there is good and bad people everywhere but he was extremely lucky to not be robbed I know people who have been killed for less stay safe when traveling
You got balls bro. My cousin has gotten robbed in plain daylight in the capital. People roll up in motorbikes if they see you with a phone tap on your window and take it. People get in the public busses with guns and tell everyone to hand over their phones and stuff a lot. All in the capital. Hell to the na na I'd never go in these hoods. Btw, that sandwich you ate is called a Shuko. Delicious!
Pkease be careful, I'm glad that nothing happened to you. Remember that a lot of people lives from tourism and if something happen to a visitor can affect the income of a lot of families. Not even me, that I'm a Guatemala go to those places.
true true
Hi Alejandra I want to visit you… write back
I noticed almost every one were looking at you like saying what a crazy man walking on a dangerous place good luck bro. I will never try to go places like that.
Bro I live 1 block away from the market exit that you took first 🤣 let me tell you that you were putting yourself on a dangerous situation. Also the bread ypu ate is called Shuco and the guy you got it from are the best in the area

This guys deserves a tip for such content. Better than a movie.
My mom grew up in z18. Unfortunately, a few bad apples can really ruin an entire community. Like you said, there are good people everywhere! However, for any tourists inspired by this video who want to check out Zone 18… PLEASE DO NOT!
wow did you notice the woman at 11:13 taking her phone out and (looks like) filming you? Seems like they definitely kept an eye on you..😅 But thank you for sharing about these places! It shows truth and awareness, that's what we need more of in this world so thank you and please stay safe!🤍 much love
Good eye! But most likely she didn't inform the bad people about him. It seems like she just recorded him for 1 second and then put her phone in her purse again.
Just like Tim filming the locals, she had the same interest. Like "omg this crazy white boy being around here with his camera, i have never seen that before, let me take a picture" 😂
Yep, well spotted
Just this week, 3 teenage girls (14-17 y/o) where caught dismembering another girl in zone 18, news speculated gang initiation. Killings and kidnappings are reported regularly in that zone. Like a month ago, a young man was gunned in a market very similar to where you were walking, and another case of 3 people gunned in a house just a couple of weeks ago (and those are not the only recent cases there).
Violence doesn't show on the surface as you experienced, until you are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and hits happen quickly. Many gang members here are crazy enough to kill just to steal a phone or a few quetzales.
Stay safe and don't push your luck too much in those areas!
Wow that sounds awful is there a prensa libre link?
That’s insane bro!! Crazy situation honestly
@@Slayerrrrrr You are right, in zone 18, once in a bag they found mummified corpses, tied as if in chains and with marks, the forensic experts said that they had been dead for about 2 years and were already in mummified state
My father lives in zona 21 & he says it’s all reputation that the “red zones” have, he said he walks the streets & hasn’t seen one gang member. The worst you can expect is petty theft while ridding the buses.
Heey Tim
To change things up you could make a video where you show your backpack and what's is in there. I have the feeling lots of people are really curious on what and how much to pack for their next travells ; )
that's a cool idea I'd like to see that too haha
I can tell u bro hahah !! 4/5 plane tshirts- 2 shorts 🩳 - 1 jeans - 1 hacket - 1 hoodie - flip flos and toiletries all together in a 40lt backpack haha
@@TimmyKarter Allright, perfect. Thats all i needed. I will also go for 40l in that case. Thx
You got some balls. I think if the video was even a little less cut at some moments like when you left the market could have been even more immersive btw :) Letting things slow down.. I think it would help make the video more viral and so one works and you don’t make too many of those putting your life at risk eheh

As someone who was adopted from Guatemala it makes me so sad that it's too dangerous to go back and explore my culture...but I appreciate your dedication. Believing there were people living there that are good people, pushed to do what they can to survive
The city is divided into zones. Each zone has a number of neighborhoods. Zona 18 has many neighborhoods and some of them are more dangerous than others. Also there are gated neighborhoods that you can only access if you live there or someone who lives there signs you in. I have no idea what neighborhood you went to. I don't recognize what mercado you went to but it looks like you were in the main streets for the most part. They are not exactly safe but are not that dangerous either. Going inside the alleys that's where the danger is. I lived close to Colonia Limon and knew people in Colonia Maya. I only went to places in those neighborhoods where I knew someone. As long as you stay on the main roads you'll be fine. In any neighborhood you go to; you will find that most people are actually friendly and are trying to make an honest living.

The hot dog you ate is a local street food typical in Guatemala and is called "SHUKO" , and that basically means dirty or unclean food . But they are the boom , very delicious and unique indeed.

That was a really bad call. I stopped watching the video when you decided to go to Zone 18 despite the advice from the locals. You're very lucky to have gotten out of there without any trouble.
I stopped watching the video when he got in the Uber to go to z18. Then I read the comments to make sure he wasn't attacked, and then I finished the video. 😅 Tim is afraid of cockroaches but will go into an extremely dangerous place for a video? "Crrrazy man!"

My cousin lived in zona 18. No one there ever gave me a problem. At the time it was still known to be dangerous as it is today. I’ve spent weeks there and not once did anyone ever bother me. I didn’t go out at night though. During the day I would walk to the market or store and get my rubios and Doritos.

Zona 11 Villalobos is getting rough. I lived there for a bit and miss it a lot. That's living for real in comparison to our coddled lives in the US. Every day has more flavor and feels more real.
That is the mayor reason why cemeteries and prisons never stop filling them up. People like to take chances until One day
I’m glad you stayed in and around the Center. I’ve only ever been there once and it was to my moms godfathers house. He told us just a couple days before the water delivery driver was gunned down at the corner of their house.
you walked in "San Rafael 2" is one of the dangerous neighborhoods, but one mile further is the neighborhood "El paraiso 2" That neighborhood is more dangerous, right in front of where you ate, is the "El Paraiso 1" neighborhood, another dangerous neighborhood, and then further in there are the neighborhoods "Las Alamedas, Barrio Colombia, Santa Faz" You were eating in a neighborhood with less danger level, the highest levels are the neighborhoods that I mentioned before. I was born in 1977 in those neighborhoods and I grew up in the 80's, and I know every street to walk on.

I would not have went in area 18, I have been in areas like that but I new the territory and were not to go in the bad area. In your adventure you stayed in the open busy populated areas and I feel you were scoped out by the gang/gangs and given a green light, you were not a threat and it was not worth the trouble to them BUT NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE TO GO VISIT.
