  • The Blackthorn Tree is an incredible tree it can grow to around 7 metres tall & live for 100 years! The older it gets the darker the bark goes until ultimately the tree becomes dark black earing it's name "Blackthorn"
    It's Latin name is prunus spinosa & it's apart of the Rosaceae making this tree related to the beautiful rose flower 🌹
    🐝 Its one of the first tree's to bloom in spring making it a great source of nectar for bee's & butterfly's the Blackthorn supports all walks of wildlife throughout the year.
    🌸 The flower blossoms are edible too being used to flavour things like syrups or decorating cakes they have a delicious almomdy flavour BUT moderation is key & you shouldn't consume too many no more than a tea spoon.
    🍇After its flowers comes to sloe berries from around September to December famous for being made into sloe gin. These berries are rich in vitamin C The sloe berries are a bitter tonic, stimulating the metabolism and cleaning the blood. The leaves can be dried & used as a tea alternative or can even be used as a green dye.
    ☠️The Blackthorn can live up to the dark mythology & Folklore that surrounds the tree. If you get injured by the thorn of the Blackthorn you can get blackthorn poisoning. Blackthorn poisoning can cause severe infections , blood poisoning, swelling and joint pain. If left too long before treatment, even amputation might be the result.
    In Christianity it's believed that in you worship the devil he'll appear & prick his worshippers finger with the thorn of the Blackthorn 😈
    All in all the Blackthorn is a beautiful tree supporting wildlife all year long with food & shelter plus its rich in history & Folklore too.

    I love my blackthorn- I have fields of it. People around me give me grief because of its thorn punctures car tyres and can give you septicaemia. Your video has lifted my heart- thankyou. The flowers are beautiful. I have an ancestor - she was burnt at the the stake- a full cycle- good prevails as you said.

    Awesome video. The Blackthorn tree was an Ogham of the Druids as well, one of the most ancient alphabets. (Both Eastern and Western religions of antiquities, acknowledge that wisdom/learning and trees had direct associations... Trees are the silent witnesses), Not only was Blackthorn an Ogham 'Runic' letter, but it carried symbologies. An prominent symboligy of antiquity concerning Blackthorn literally was Surgery. So now I know it was as literal as it was figurative. lol
    BLackthorn was probably the cardinal, negative Ogham. But seeing as how everything was understood in cycles in antiquity (namely of the Druids), the severance of something might be necessary in someone's life, especially where something new might be concerned... it is probably the most dismal letter though with next to no obvious, positive associations. lol Also, the Irish Shillelagh was a Blackthorn branch and you can still buy them!
    Another interesting point off of what you taught, was about Hawthornes. Hawthornes carried the symbology of marriage... thus Blackthorne being it's diametric opposite in lore, would mean a divorce (severance).
    The Oak and the Holly were two trees at war as well, every year. The half of the year where the sun was strong was the time of the Oak King. The Holly King ruled in the half that was dark. Holly also had associations with clubs or weapons. (Oak would be Spring and Summer, relatively... Holly, Fall and Winter).
    Another interesting and very unique, ancient observance of Blackthorn, is that when everything else sheds and dies, it starts to fruit, as you mentioned. It's one of the only trees that is producing when everything else is withering. That made it a tree of reverence as well I believe... Evergreens carried the symbol of 'eternal life' like snakes did, that shed their skins, or the phoenix bird. Evergreens don't ever seem to 'die' at any point in the year, thus they had that reverence.

    Really interesting video! We recently bought some land (we lived in Umbria, Italy) and it's completely overrun with spiky blackthorn. The tiny saplings spread everywhere by runners and are a nightmare when the kids want to run around. Good to hear about the fight between blackthorn and hawthorn though!!

    Very nice:) I have a blackthorn staff and wand. In East Anglian (and I guess most witchcraft) lore the blackthorn rod is a "blasting rod" for directing malefica but is also defensive as well against malefica. Blackthorn staffs are heavy and this is why they make good self defence weapons. The Irish shillelagh is made of blackthorn for this reason. With regard to the sloe, I may be wrong but I think that in Ray Mears' Wild Food series that he did with Prof.Gordon Hillman the paleobotanist they found out that once the berry was bletted it was entirely edible as the sugars had been released. Maybe you have come across this? Ive yet to try myself!

    • @AlissaSss23
      @AlissaSss23 Год назад

      Sorry, what is bletted? I know they become edible after the first frost, some people forage them before and freeze them. Normally they are used for gin but they can be used in jams and preserves or syrups too
