My biggest gripe about Japan is regional specialties that would be considered restaurant-to-restaurant variation in any other country in the world.
Sauce katsudon... but the sauce is made with miso. Nagoya speciality. Udon, but it's flat. Another Nagoya specialty. Chicken wings, but they use salt and heaps of black pepper instead of just salt. Another Nagoya spec-... Actually maybe my problem is just with Nagoya

When I first started learning Japanese, I somehow was able to grasp the concept that each vowel was a mora, but for some reason, I thought there was supposed to be a pause in-between each vowel. I kept pronouncing 憂鬱 (Yuuutsu) as "Yu'u'utsu." It wasn't until watching 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 that I realized, "Oh, you merge them. That's just how long you pronounce the vowel, kinda."
Also, finally, I have a keyboard that can type 涼宮 without first having to type 涼 then 宮 separately. That was so annoying!😂
