  • @nanomachine

One time back in the 2000s when I was on a stroll through Tokyo I met an older gentleman who wanted to practice English with me. Too polite to say no I said of course and he sat down next to me. His first sentence was "My name is Tanaka and I am four scores and eight years old...". Good pronunciation but the way he spoke sounded very old fashioned. We kept talking for a while and he seemed like a really nice person, but the words he used were archaic and it was quite difficult to understand what he meant sometimes.
Suddenly the reason came up. He had never taken any English classes as he had no time from his job selling lottery tickets in a nearby booth, so what he had done was for the last fifteen years was reading an English bible that he received from some missionaries when he was a kid, over and over again. His daughter had helped him from time to time but she eventually moved to Australia or the US (I don't remember which), so he hoped to be table to talk to her when she would come back.
I was really impressed, but why he didn't get some English textbooks, consumed English movies or music instead, I have no idea.

yeah honestly dogen I can't say anything other than you're an absolute artist. This was the best thing I've ever watched 0:00 to 23:09 was just an absolute pleasure. I speak as someone who's not the courage to produce or author videos with my own face, let alone my own name. This is what people who create content should strive to achieve, in my humble opinion. This is a beautiful work you've created. Just a joy to take in. Hilarious. I've been subbed for some time but I marvel at you succeeding with a platform that is probably just a delusion of grandeur for most. 100/10. You made my day. Thanks.

    彼の旅情に水を差すところからして、彼自身が, magnet って話かな?
    Uncle を引き寄せる magnet. どうだろう?

Your an introvert aren’t you? It’s the way you talk about people’s words and behavior with “launches his second offensive” I know you use a lot of descriptive language, but the idea of it being an attack on ones person along with an inner monologue makes it sounds very much like an introverted character is telling the story.

Living in Yame, rural Fukuoka Prefecture, in 1999, I recall sitting on a bus and having this same experience. When I refused to respond at all, we sat in awkward silence until the oyaji, without explanation, pulled a torso-length, unwrapped fish from inside his jacket (seemingly from his armpit) presented it to me wordlessly and left. To this day, I wonder how he explained this to his hungry wife.

I found you by some fluke and found your voice extremely calming and comforting but I have no experience with Japanese, not really even with Japanese media like anime. You are able to make those who are out of the loop laugh and continue to feel like they are participating in the story, and that is really a testament to your skills as a writer and a comedian. I’ve found a new favorite channel!

Oh, wow, this is totally my life. I have lived in Tokyo for decades. Although my immediate neighbors know me and just discuss the weather in a normal fashion, anywhere else I go I have the exact same conversation multiple times a day. Wow, your Japanese is so good. I want to speak English better. Do you have any advice? And on and on. My husband was being wheeled down a hospital hallway on his way to a tricky surgery. We were saying our final words to each other before being separated and... (bouncy, friendly nurse who is pushing the gurney) ... you both speak Japanese so well. How long have you lived here? Any tips on how I could speak English better? Agh!! Another time I had gone out to coffee with a friend whose husband was leaving her. She was talking to me in low tones about the situation and was crying. Enter cheerful waiter to refill our waters. Oh, you speak Japanese so well. Being bilingual has been my lifelong dream. Any advise? Agh!

I love these narrative videos, they're the best thing about the channel. The strange thing that I appreciate the most in them is the fact that the subtitle translations aren't literal, in fact if you understand both the original narration and the subtitles they kind of tell the same story in different ways, at the same time, which kind of blows my mind.

Hey Dogen, I'm a native speaker of Japanese. I really think your contents are funny and you're making an assiduous effort. Your skills are impressive but still have room for improvement. So I'll point out some words that you can pronounce better.
    8割"のうち"の75%
    乃木坂46(のぎざかfortysix) (recent popular idol group)
    街で"見かけた"ことすらない
    "これから"の長旅に
    30人"程"のモーニング
    囲まれたこの小さな"駅"は
    リュック"を"おろして
    大分←→大分駅(different kinds of pronunciation )
all of those words are in the beginning(~5:00)
    Keep it up!
