This is my report from a trip on the JR Hamakaze train. Only one of these a day goes from Tottori down to Osaka. And it's not the quickest route there - other services get you there faster and leave several times a day. So why exactly does this mysterious limited express service still exist? That's what I wanted to find out! So I got a reserved seat one day on the Hamakaze and we set out, along the Sea of Japan, down through lush Hyōgo Prefecture on the obscure, winding Bantan Line, to Himeji. There, I got a welcome surprise about the view out my window for the final hour, when the train goes along the Seto Inland Sea to Osaka.
A great day seeing the misty mountains and gorgeous green river valleys of central Honshū in the best way: on a reliable little Japanese train!
