how weird a gue who try to become a vtuber to pop out of nowhere and is trying to make friends while beginning to make his own content? And I would like to hear more about sound (personally sound is one of my biggest weaknesses)
Mari? Can you do a tutorial of your tubing steps i’m learning how to be a RUclipsr right now And I might need some help so can you help me please respond?😢
I've noticed a lot of male vtuber models are, to be quite frank, overcompensating on musculature. It's usually not that the head is too small, it's that the torso is too big, which then makes the head look small since most of the time all the viewers see from a model is the upper torso and head.
I've purposefully avoided that because I wanted my design to be more relatable and closer to myself rather than attempt to thirst-trap. Even in my upcoming redesign, I'm not going to be super muscular.
@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena If that's the case, then it's a good thing I'm already pretty open about being happily engaged and about my having zero interest in entertaining any romantic parasocial fantasies nor to ever do anything even close to BFE. Heck, I may include a character representing my fiancé in my lore as well as some future art pieces that I commission.
I work out. I'm disabled so I never thought I'd be able to work out so getting to in my 40s is kind of a big deal. So I asked the artist to make me "uncomfortably masculine."
I always assumed the exaggerated body proportions of male vtubers were based on yaoi art styles, especially the long chins, and large elongated torsos/hands. I could be wrong, of course, but I think elongated, pointy triangular chins were a pretty common physical feature in BL, at least historically (although BL art styles are way more diverse now). I would prefer more realistic proportions, personally, but the art style must appeal to someone because male vtubers keep adopting it.
As a freelance audio engineer for over a decade, using a compressor or limiter in software will only prevent peaking/distortion if you're adjusting the volume in software as well. What most people have issues with is distortion that occurs in the audio interface itself, usually by setting the volume too high. My recommendation for OBS users would be to set their audio interface volume quite low, so that even when you yell, it doesn't peak or distort. Then, in OBS, set a Noise Gate filter to block out any ambient background noise your microphone is picking up, followed by an Upward Compressor filter to bring the volume back up to listening volume. Specifically, it'll only raise the volume of quieter parts, while keeping the volume of louder parts unchanged (such as when you yell etc.) If you want to get fancy, you can even link Compressor filters together so that, for example, your game or BGM audio will automatically lower in volume when you talk, and return to normal volume when you stop speaking. That way you don't need to worry about your voice being drowned out by loud game audio.
One thing that I've noticed when trying to design myself a male vtuber model is that there often aren't great references for proportions. For instance an actual picture of a man often proportionally doesn't match up with what people want stylistically. I typically lean towards cuter designs anyway so once i gave up on making a super manly looking male vtuber it was easier for me to make an actual design I liked. But overall it is very hard to find good examples of proportions because real people often don't match the style people want and so many existing male vtuber models fall into those proportion issues that you mentioned.
Many moons ago I went to school for audio engineering so maybe this'll be helpful: One handy thing to know about audio on RUclips, if you're setting a brickwall limiter for your audio so you don't peak (hardware or software), try to set it so that you don't go above -1db. RUclips & most streaming platforms (even Spotify) like to try to normalize audio a lil bit & if it sees you're encroaching on 0db it'll sometimes compensate by turning down the entire audio channel on the viewer's side. Mari's 100% right on compressors being your best friend - pairing it with a gate is also very handy too if you have a lot of background noise you'd like to not bleed through constantly as well. Just make sure you figure out the db level of your noise floor so that you're not cutting out your own voice with it as well lol. Audio's a bit of a deep topic, but you're on RUclips already, there's tons of tutorials to find here haha
As a former people pleaser, the advice for toxic friendships is on point absolutely important to learn and a boundary one needs to learn to set for any relationship period. There're also going to be people who will go out of their way to disrespect you. They'll become a bigger drain of your time and energy. Some people you gotta teach them how they should treat you. If they're rude, talk behind your back, talk smack to your face you don't even need to talk it out. Just block them move on. I know it feels like a harsh move. but people can be selfish and it's a very selfish world in reality. Save your energy and friendship for the people who show they do deserve it 😊
The male vtuber proportion thing is super valid! A lot of male designs seen very... Jojo's-esque? There's something to be said about the masculine ideals there. Though what's even more curious to me is legs! Ive seen both male and female models with legs that are far taller than the torso and its just kinda strange to me, like. Though I guess that comes across far less often, as most vtubers just show their upper half most of the time.
i'm not actually bothered by legs as someone who draws them long. i just generally like how longer legs look. and yeah, i think there's a hyper-masculine idealisation thing going on. kind of a random example but the same thing happens with charcacters from project sekai and it looks SO weird when the male characters are next to the female ones because the PROPORTIONS ARE SO DIFFERENT 😭
True, to each their own when it comes to stylistic choices. There's probably something really thoughtful to be said about the psychology of it all, but I don't have that kinda degree.
It's not hard to imagine unaware en vtubers unintentionally chasing the *female gaze* without being aware of it, when you see all the other big successful male corpo vtubers following the macho design trend and follow it themselves. That earlier comment in the video about 'yaoi art styles' is very on-point.
Leg length isn't always equivalent to torso. I'm a man and my legs ARE longer than my torso. My arms are also abnormally long and I have proportionally long fingers.
You're not wrong about male models, but it is a little funny. Let's not forget that SO MANY female models have huge heads compared to their bodies, or have huge booba. I'm not saying this in an argumentative way, rather just that there are tons of ways that models are disproportionate in vtubing. But also, I do think that a lot of artists, or at least anime-style artists, have a lot less practice drawing men. I've heard it so often that they have a ton of skill with women but virtually none with men.
Thank you for responding! I bought an interface, but I didn't realize my new mic was also usb lmao, it was expensive and many recommended it, so I went with it Now I am trying to see if there is a way to connect a usb C mic to an interface with the right cable, but I am not too good when it comes to this stuff sadly!
Dont. Probably disappointing, but it makes no sense to do that. You wont gain anything from it and probably just make the audio worse that way. Everything the microphone needs and what is usually part of an interface is already build into any USB mic, bc otherwise it wouldnt work. (duh! xD ) So either use the USB mic as it is or you have to buy an XLR mic to use with the interface. Sorry. :I
Im sorry you ended up in this situation. If you have a good usb mic then that is all you are going to need for your voice audio. On the interface, if you ever plan on taking audio from something else, like an old game console then the interface will come in handy. Or if you want to capture audio from a musical instrument.
I really appreciate how you answered the last question. I've had too many run ins with emotional vampires and they really have no interest in improving their situation or behavior, they just abuse the kindness of others over and over again. More people need to hear that it's not acceptable to treat people like that and it's 100% OK to cut ties with them.
on the topic of toxic people and finding your positive ones, i know its SUPER hard to find those special people but i know you can find them all like i have (: you guys got this and keep searching and staying positive!!!!
Audio engineering major here! I'm graduating with my degree in one week! I haven't tried streaming apps yet myself, so I don't have suggestions for settings there, but you could look into limiters if you're yelling a lot. Compressors actually reduce the dynamic range of your mix (how loud the loud things are and how soft the soft things are), but it depends on what settings you use. For example, you can set up a ducking compressor for things like reducing the loudness of background music whenever you talk. Focusrite is a good decently priced audio interface, and if you want something high-end, you could go for an interface by Universal Audio. I can vouch for the UA Apollo Twin X Duo being really nice.
1:20 I think they call that the ikemen style? It's also probably popularized by some east Asian beauty standards ex. Korean standards of having a "small face" which means like good proportioned /balanced face that is characterized by having a pointier chin and an overall "cool/ handsome/ athletic" look for men and "pretty doe eyed" look for girls. (I may not be correct in everything, it's just from things I have heard, please anyone correct me if I am wrong :D )
I actually used myself as a model for my... well, model. Only difference is my hair is nowhere near that long. YET. I do wish I could have changed my arms and skin tone a bit, but I am still learning about design. Maybe someday!
I really love this format. It might be the tism brain, but having something to visually focus on (the kirby game) helped me stay focused on what you were saying so it felt like I actually understand what was going on instead of it just glossing over me lol I also think the friendship advice was a good answer.
I think having gameplay in the background for casual discussion videos like this was a good move. I have a feeling it will boost retention 🤔 (also, the art style for the GBA Kirby games is my favorite in the whole series 😊)
As far as software options goes, I've been pretty happy with steelseries sonar. Free to use even if you don't have any steelseries gear. Allows a decent amount of audio balancing but also lets you apply a decent eq, noise gate, noise reduction, and compression to your mic. Can then use its output for obs, discord, in game voip, etc. so you sound the same across everything.
So, about 10 months ago I cut ties with a friend group whom I had known for 5 years, and it was one of the hardest decisions I ever made. I won't bore you with a long story on how we met or all the adventures we had. All you need to know is we met back in 2018, and we have been hanging out for years afterward. What started was a friendly Minecraft smp whom I was hyped for and helped spent so much time helping prepare. We even set a date, time, and who was going to be on. When the time came I waited over an hour only to find out that everyone started without me. When I told them I was hurt by this, they brushed it off like it wasn't a big deal, then later cornered me acting like they were the victim because they were offended that I brought up the subject. I did my very best to reason with them, tried to talk it out, and even apologized for my actions. However, they never apologized to me, got offended easily, called me a freak, and even treated me like a parasite for months afterward. Honestly, it was all one-sided. I eventually concluded that they no longer see me as a friend, so I cut them off without saying much. Now don't get me wrong, they weren't always like that, but some people just change over time and may take you for granted for always being the nice and supportive guy. I eventually got over it, and now I am even more happy that I have new friends who are supportive and even more reasonable to work things out.
For new Audio Interfaces it might be worth for at least europeans (dunno about USA) to take a look at Thomann which currently celebrate their 70th anniversary and cut down many prices lower than i have ever seen them before. Among them Focusrites Vocaster Interfaces, which are currently dirt cheap there and are great basic interfaces that offer a very solid audio quality AND a Mute-Button. Im using the Vocaster One and cant complain. That thing is 45€ there atm and thats a steal. (Its usually price is around 100€, with occasional dips to 70€) It doesnt have a build in audio separation, but for that exists "Steelseries Sonar". :D
I relate to that last one so much. I dont know how many times ive delt with energy vampires so much it really is exhausting there was one that claimed its brat tendancys i badly wanted to be like thats not being a brat not accepting compliments and having a lot of insecurities it got annoying really fast thats one trate in a person i consider a red flag for anyone.
I had made specific requests when I had my model made in order to avoid the overly buff and pointy chin syndromes. And still it had the pointy chin! Luckily the next revision my artist understood I wanted a more squared off jaw and it got fixed XD
Hi! I have a couple questions about layout. I've been looking for advice everywhere on the background scenarios or layouts some people use, but I haven't found much besides character design, so I'd like to know what could be more optimal and balanced, especially for two avatars since I'll be streaming in company. A little advice for beginners would be appreciated, but I'm also curious about how people choose their vtubing backgrounds later on. Questions aside, I'll be looking forward to an audio software focused video (I really am struggling rip). Your videos have been of great help btw, so thank you for that! ^^
I can't even bring myself to make myself into an anime character, I'd rather be a cartoon of some sort. It is pretty fun to make anime parodies of public figures with that vroid shit tho ngl
I could show you how I have stuff routed through wavexlr and filters applied in obs if you'd want to as you mentioned you'd want to see more on software side
ya i get chu on the 1st topic regarding to Male Vtuber design. back then how i envision a male version of Kizuna Ai [backthen vtuber is not a thing yet]. would be be something like a standard shounen spiky hair character from the 2010 Era. But what surprise me is when Vtuber a thing, its resource become more accessible and more Male Vtuber starting to pop out. most of the design is either what you describe, they are either very K-pop ish inspire, Kirito Clone, or more or less velubtous pec smol head, sharp long chin like anime Character from the 80', or you could say from the early 2000'. not kidding try search that up most male character from the 80' look like that. Big upper body and looooooong sharp chin. despite the trend I am still a proud pointy hair design from the 2010 XD a hybrid design inspire from Kingdom heart nomura art style and Law of Ueki.
I never really realized all the oddly proportioned male model's before. I just knew that something looked weird with them, I just thought they were too big. So when I commissioned mine I just asked to have it be smaller than they normally make it. Unfortunately I have perpetuated the pointy chin stereotype
4:40 When you plug some device like Switch, through Elgato, Discord want tonude the plugged device as microphone, which is kinda dumb... and it can sometimes cause problems with audio.
do more on male vtubers, a friend told me to draw then androgenous and then go from there. as a male vtuber i prefer to look younger and maybe this reflects my ideas and attitudes on life but iunno i get a lot of gayboys and trans fems that seem to like me for one reason or another and tbh, i like them too, they're chill XD
Oh to answer some male vtuber model questions asking one of my friends looked into a male 2d model and some artist don’t do males or only know how to do the two of boyish or muscular. So we get a few people that can’t a few that can’t do it well. I’ve looked myself and yeah it’s hard to find one that isn’t one of the two. This answers some of it not all of it.
I am still trying to decide if I should go with GoXLR or the Elgato Wave XLR. The GoXLR looks amazing but it sounds like the lack of updates is causing it to have some issues. Elgato has good hardware and software for their products in my experience with them. So would the Elgato Wave XLR be a good option for a Shure SM7B mic? But please do make a video about the GoXLR interface, I would definitely watch that to learn more about it.
When you ask the question "why do male vtubers get shown with a smaller head, broader body, and pointy chins" it's most likely because there is an over abundance of male anime characters with those exact features. Look at Ouran High School host Club. The Majority of the males have "smaller" heads compared to their broader bodies, the younger male characters have more rounded chin, and the female that looks like a male has a narrower body and a bigger looking head. Look at Full Metal Alchemist. Mustang looks like he has a smaller head than Riza. Look at Dr. Stone. Look at Evangelion. Look at My Hero Academia. Males have broader bodies, and it makes their heads look smaller. Males tend to have pointier chins. Male VTubers have that aesthetic because anime tends to have that aesthetic.
All those wide male vtuber you're talking about are just Sattou0 fans 😂 I went the vroid route and I think 3d male vtubers are more likely to be "normal" proportioned similar to female characters since that's the range of proportions vroid studio is built for
Maybe the male vtubers are trying to immitate the proportions of male characters in manhwas, in all the manhwas that I know the male characters have extremelly wide shoulders and pointy features. Also, most of the male vtubers I know are completely based on sexualising the model, and they try to compensate the lack of personality with muscles
Here is a question. How would a introvert like me find and make friends? I find most things boring and pointless and i have been trying new things out but not much luck plus money
About the name of your Monday vids, you could combine both ideas into "Ask Mari Mondays" The only reasons I can think of for male Vtuber models to have a long chin, but small head compared to their bodies, is because: 1) The model could be making up for something the dude using the model lacks irl, or perhaps the artist who made it is. It might sound harsh, being said like that, but it's true. 2) Either the person behind the model, or the artist, has never studied irl anatomy before, & only learned from watching anime with unrealistic buff proportions... Or 3) They think it'll make them stand out more, make them seem older, & possibly be more attractive to hetero females, or gay males. It's the same concept of why female Vtubers who have unrealistically huge bewbies choose to have them that damn big: they want attention & more viewers, & they think that's the way to do it. Also, what retro games do you like? Anything Zelda or Final Fantasy related? I'd love to see a list of games you enjoy playing!
QUESTION - What would you like me to talk about next?
how weird a gue who try to become a vtuber to pop out of nowhere and is trying to make friends while beginning to make his own content? And I would like to hear more about sound (personally sound is one of my biggest weaknesses)

(Its usually price is around 100€, with occasional dips to 70€)
It doesnt have a build in audio separation, but for that exists "Steelseries Sonar".
YES FINALLY FOR THE BOYS
Big upper body and looooooong sharp chin.
despite the trend I am still a proud pointy hair design from the 2010 XD
a hybrid design inspire from Kingdom heart nomura art style and Law of Ueki.
Question about the audio topic. What are your recommended OBS compressor settings for streaming?
Thank you for the video!
mari no nintendo is gonna sew you
Also thanks for the series looking great
Oh to answer some male vtuber model questions asking one of my friends looked into a male 2d model and some artist don’t do males or only know how to do the two of boyish or muscular.
Male VTubers have that aesthetic because anime tends to have that aesthetic.
why is the video 4 views? oh wait it's 1 minute ago...
You got me 😂
@@MariYumeCh Hehe
All those wide male vtuber you're talking about are just Sattou0 fans 😂
I went the vroid route and I think 3d male vtubers are more likely to be "normal" proportioned similar to female characters since that's the range of proportions vroid studio is built for
1:05 does chibi count to that question as answer?
I noticed the weird male vtuber head thing along time ago as well. I dont have said issue. A lot a very square shouldered too. Its just odd
I have a question, who's the little homie in the bottom right?
The little homie is Mr. Underhill. Hes another vtuber
Umm...could you have provided examples?
Here is a question. How would a introvert like me find and make friends? I find most things boring and pointless and i have been trying new things out but not much luck plus money
I want to start streaming. As a male should I look out for these things?
First
Discord is complete garbage. Msn messenger was so much better lolol
About the name of your Monday vids, you could combine both ideas into "Ask Mari Mondays"
The only reasons I can think of for male Vtuber models to have a long chin, but small head compared to their bodies, is because:
1) The model could be making up for something the dude using the model lacks irl, or perhaps the artist who made it is.
