My ancestors, the Udy family from Cornwall, were amongst the first Methodists in New Zealand, arriving on the 7th of February, 1840 aboard the Duke of Roxburghe. The Duke of Roxburghe was the third colonising ship to Aotearoa New Zealand. Hart Udy (senior) was a lay preacher and carpenter believed to have built the first Methodist hall in Lower Hutt/Petone.
