A real life test...no bs... thank you
Awesome video brother! I just traded in my 3500 the other day and got the 5000 to power my welder. Ive never experienced running a genny on propane and its great to see it can keep up with a constant load. Plus, I dont have to worry about my engine and carb gunking up. Thanks for making this video!
Right on
Thanks, very nice test... It would be nice to see you do the same test on gasoline for comparison. Specifications say 14.6 hours on propane and 18.2 on gas at 25% load. You did 9 on propane. Same load on gas should be around 11.2 hours.
Great suggestion!
How long on idle?
Thank you for a real world test. I was wondering if the propane conversion was going to be worth it for my 3500...Now I'm sold.
That's amazing. I've got a 2500 Champion inverter, and during no power in the freezing cold a couple years ago, it ran ALL night long on a BBQ size tank. In total around 13 hours. Furnace-(Gas), lights, fridge, TV's, Internet routers/switches. Stayed nice and warm. Felt bad we couldn't share with the neighbors, but we did make a huge couple of pots of coffee for them the next morning.
Thanks for the video! It's really good to know how long the propane tank will last in the real world. Just bought the 5000 yesterday & I prefer using propane over gas. I will have 2 full tanks as I prepare for Hurricane Beryl in the Austin, TX area. It should last me a bit longer since I don't plan on running that heavy a load.
Just bought that generator today.
Interesting comment about gasoline fumes. I’ve seen videos on the CO sensors shutting the units down. I wonder if running propane or nat gas would help to minimize these nuisance sensor problems.
The co is the same just not as potent smelling with propane. Just make sure you point exhaust in direction of the wind.
Are there any intermediate steps you need to do if you were running on gasoline? Or is it just flipping the switch to propane?
Just flip the switch
Outstanding video, thanks for taking time to do this test and show results. Very impressed. Now that HF is relaunching these I’ll pick one up.
Thanks for watching! I have lots of genders but the 5k is my fav..
Great vid. No bs unreal testing.. definitely going to go out and purchase one of these now
Great video bud , I’m in Houston and I’m running my Predator 5000 on my home . No Power due to storm that hit Thursday 6pm . It is running half my homes utilities. Lights , 2 Tvs, 5 fans and some small items to charge phone ext. it seems to be running great . I got 10 hours run time on a small 20 lb propane bottle . I was curious to see if I can buy a window unit to run and after seeing your video confirming it could handle it I’ll be making a trip to Home Depot to grab me a small 5000 BTU window unit to run until the lights get turned back on . Thanks
Did you use a transfer switch or interlock?
I am a RUclipsr Sarasota Tim and I have the predator 5. I bought the original returned it Then bought the 3500 returned it ha ha got the 5000 when it was re-released. I’m getting ready to travel with my Camper 25 Flagstaff 15,000btu ac and make RUclips content on 1 May, I have both gasoline and 2 15lb bottles of propane.
So I asked myself how long would this run on gasoline and your video came up testing the propane while I have a smaller propane bottle that should get me through the night as I’m 65 years old and don’t need to sleep that long and I have the second bottle plus gasoline. It’s gonna be warm and I hope to be able to go far enough north that I will only have to use it parts of the day maybe not even at night if I get north enough I can only imagine having to feed this generator 24 hrs when I’m not driving. Your video was excellent thank you so much. Consider checking my channel, Sarasota Tim 😎
I will check it out.. Thanks for watching!
You should really get the 20 lb bottles if you can lift them. The 20s are the same size as the 15s but some companies just rip you off by selling the 15 lb tanks for the same price as other companies sell the 20 lb bottles. The current whole sale value of the propane in a 20 lb tank is $3.33. The rest if pure profit.
The new bottles that you get out of the machines are 15 pound or just under 4 gallons of propane. I never bought a tank from Lowe's or other store . They are heavy enough to carry around. 73
Is the hose/regulator for the propane tank hookup included with purchase?
Yes
i ran mine on propane runs so smooth i love it!!!
Great video, very helpful and useful info. Thank you for sharing your test on here.
Glad it was helpful!
It seems that gasoline is going to give more run time for less cost. Is that correct?
Yes
Any idea if your gen would run a well pump? 100 ft well. I know that wasn’t the topic but been thinking what to do out here in the country if I lost power for a month.
You prob need a 240 volt generator.. If you have a 110 volt pump it would work..
Thanks for the test! I recently lost power for a little over 2 days. Ran my Firman WHO3242 generator on Propane. Probably got around 11 to 12 hours ranging from 1300 to 1700 watts. This looks pretty comparable.
Off a 20lb tank?
@kernelsanders3868 yes. 20lb tank
I had heard this unit was pretty quiet but sounds like she's ramped up pretty high running those 2000 watts
It’s the mic.. you can have a regular conversation right next to it..
@RockyRohde I currently have 2 predator 2000s, wondering if the 2 in parallel is more quiet than the 5000 running the same power
my gas regulator failed, does anyone know how to get a replacement? I don't even see a parrt number! called customer support and call keeps dropping
Sorry if I missed it, was that filled to 20 pounds, or was it a swap that only does 15?
Filled to top..
@@RockyRohdethanks
Really appreciate the time you took to do this.
I got the Predator 5000 on my list.
I'd like to be able to run it at 7,000 ft elevation, I know the output will be reduced running on propane, just trying to calculate how much, not finding a lot of "Real World" information though.
I just bought mine two days ago. Are you still happy with yours?
I am wanting a quieter generator and stopped by HF to purchase one of these today. I found out that they were $300 cheaper yesterday. Since I only wanted one and didn't need one, I decided to wait until they go on sale again. Is that a standard quick connect or a proprietary connector? What is the black thing between the hose and regulator? Is it really needed? I want to mount one of these on the back of my RV and plumb it in correctly.
Good test,thanks for doing this!
9 hrs on that tank isn’t bad. Runs much cleaner, you do lose a little power but there a trade off for everything. Me personally I think I’m just going to stick to running propane through it. Internals will be spotless and I don’t have to worry about adding additive to the crap fuel we have now
Appreciate you
Was that 20 or 30 lb propane tank.
20 pound
This did help. Thanks my man! Will share for ya
Thanks for watching!
does it use a standard 1/4" propane quick connect fitting?
Fuel filter in on the wrong end of the hose.
It is the hose oil leakage that is a problem.
Houston here.
I just convinced the wife to buy one of these after we lost power after the Derecho storm last Thursday.
This just sold it for us.
Same here but consider how easy will it be to refill the tank daily after a hurricane. I looking at a natural gas or tri fuel model.
It's probably coming in handy right now with Barel that came through
@@WeThePeople001 I am still using the generac I got from Costco after Harvey. Using about 10 gallons of gas a day
@@WeThePeople001
We didn’t lose power this time.
Is that a 20 pound tank?
Yes
You were running just about 60% load
How long will it pull the same load on gasoline?
Great video. I purchased one yesterday when they had it on sale. One thing that is driving me crazy abd i hipe you can answer is what is the clip on the regulator for? The one that looks like it can keep a bag of potato chips closed.
That's to clip it on the handle of the generator.
Im curious if you Can hook up a 100lb tank to this???
I don’t see why not, that’s what the regulator is for
Thank You
Amazing
How much does it cost to fill up a 20lbs tank where you are?
In my area, Waxhaw, NC it’s $2.99 a gallon for propane
@@Painfulwhale360$3.50 here in Jacksonville Florida
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do this. Helped me make a decision. Off to H.B. I go!
Generator is great.. I use it all the time
Its max nonstop output is 3,600w with LP.
So 2K thats about 56%~ of rated steady watts output on LP.
.
I think if you do a test on gas, you'll find that the size of the gas tank will affect run time, per filling. With larger power loads then the 25% numbers they use to advertise with.
0.01c
It goes to show that 25% load is not efficient for this generator. When you are pulling more like 57% load and it cuts you down to 9 hours on a 20 lbs tank instead of the rated 14.6 hours on 20 lbs of propane, if efficiency was the same, you should be hitting closer to 6.5 hours. I suspect near full load you will also see the efficiency drop. So you are probably in the high efficiency band of the generator in this test. There is also the issue of as it cools down at night, air conditioners use less power. So this may not be a valid test.
It seems to point to if you are looking to run the generator all waking hours of the day in a real world situation and shut down around bedtime, you probably need more like a 30 lbs propane tank. A 40 lbs tank may not make it through the night as low load still burns a significant amount as efficiency drops at low load. Jumping up to a 100 lbs tank, you may get 2 days of 24 hour run time out of this generator. Maybe push it out to three days if you shut off at night.
For conversions, it seems 15 lbs of propane ~= 2 gallons of gasoline in terms of run time.
Hey bro. Great video. Called HF about recall and said don't worry keep using?😮
Any update on yours? The callback was for the key fob and starter button not working after running propane for an extended period of time.
@@cityguyable No. Mine still runs great.
The Predator 5000 is Recalled and out of stock. If anyone bought one, check out serial number and take it back if a bad unit. Many complaints that they shut off under substantial, but within specs, loads.
Until they get this one correct, the Champion 4650 w/ dual fuel and remote start is the ticket. Just as quiet. No issues. If you really want a Predator 5000 they apparently will be restocking a 'fixed' unit Dec 21st.
So are you pretty happy still with your purchase ? I keep going back and forth between this and the 9500 .
Get the 5000. It’s a Cadillac compared to 9500. The 9500 is a nice generator just extremely heavy and loud in comparison.
Get one, then the other when you can afford it😀.Sorry,I’m a tool junkie.
I like the 5 but I want to run a generator for a welder too…idk what to do😢
@@smgriget a soft start system for the AC unit. I have a 3.5t and the 5000 should be able to handle it once I modify it with the Micro air system.
@@smgrimy 3500 could run a hobart 140 all day. Clean power and never tripped. I upgraded to the 5000 to have a bit more allowance in terms of running watts. Do it! lol. 😂
