Great review but I gotta say that Red Oak looks like it splits easier then the fir and pine I split. I’ve got 3 splitting mauls a Fiskars X27, a Husqvarna and the Gransfors Bruks. All three do a great job but the GFBs is definitely the best for me. $60, $110, $220 respectively in today’s dollars. The Fiskars is an excellent tool for the price. Functional is the word that describes it best. The Husqvarna is definitely the middle ground. It’s a nice axe and performs well. It definitely has more soul and tradition than the Fiskars. The Gransfors Bruks is my favorite. Besides being beautiful it’s just a pleasure to own and use.

Yeah Gränsfors makes really great stuff. I don't have the big maul simply because I already have an old very good maul of that size and shape. I use the maul for the first splits on big pieces but as soon as I can I shift to a higher chopping block and work with Gränsfors smallest splitting ax, 3,3 pounds 19 inch. I use my wood for my sauna and a small stove so I split it well and for that job, one or two handed, that ax is beyond anything I've ever tried.

Being a family man I would recommend some safety overalls. One slip of that chainsaw and you could rip you're legs up good. One of my brothers almost suffered a tragedy but he was wearing proper gear. Don't want to tell you what to do, but check them out. You're wife would appreciate it.
Splitting green wood has a lot of moisture in it. If you don’t dry and oil it immediately after, every ax will rust. The rust will come off with the next hard day of work. Even keeping an ax under cover but outside will rust a head that isn’t oiled regularly.
For larger jobs and longer wood a splitter is the way to go. You wore out much sooner than I wold have using a splitter. I like to cut at 25 in long for my furnace. One issue I have is balancing a 25 in log and splitting. The pieces you split are normal but the odd stuff, a splitter is better. I have and would use a maul more on small jobs and 16 in long rounds.
I agree. I too like longer pieces of wood. But its more practical for me to cut it short and split it, then stack it "two" deep in my stove. Speaking of wearing out, I split a cord of wood Sunday, I was definitely wore out. Good exercise though lol. Thanks for the comment!
I've been splitting on average 35 cord a year by hand for 5 years. Last year once all the wood was cut into rounds it took 3 weeks to split it all I was averaging 1.5 to 2 cord a day. How much can one person split with an average rented log splitter?
We agree on this Swede. I normally split knotty Spruce and that is way worse than easy birch. All that sap just makes it so soggy. Best way is to cut in 30cm logs, dry for a couple of days and then get your cleaver out.
I know this is a tool for work and not for looking at, but man, you need to take better care of it. It really is a great tool, show it a little more love.
It will get a nice brown patina cause its good steel. It will be solid dark brown and absolutely beautiful. Also that finish will be matinence free and helps the maul come out when stuck. It wont ever get pitting or anything like that.
I'd say its Guaranteed to be a high quality handle. I have over struck wood rounds a hand full of times over the years. If I were to break it, would they replace it for free? *No,* that would be my fault. But it is pretty tough. Thanks for the comment Wayne.
Ok tools but they are factory made on huge presses. Not worth the price, to me. Red oak is one if the easiest woods to split, might be even easier than most pine!
You definitely have good splitting technique but it looks like you leave your G.B maul out in the rain. If your going to spend that kind of money on a maul you should keep it dry and oiled. I have several G.B axe's and they are the best, 👍🪓🎄🇮🇪

Easy splitting pine? Maple and birch splitts easier than pine in my experience

Linseed oil base. Over time the dirt/oil from your hands polish it to that dark golden patina. That’s a well used maul
