In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the income tax imposed by the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act for being an unapportioned direct tax. The decision was superseded in 1913 by the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which allows Congress to levy income taxes without apportioning them among the states. Also in the Constituition itself protected us from unapportioned taxes. But the passage of the 16th Amendment, the revenue act of 1913 and the Federal Reserve act in 1913 all guaranteed we’d suffer while the old men that passed those laws lived like kings.

Virtually everything that has a semi conductor in it is produced in the most economic countries to produce them, so it's doubtful the Far East will be superceded anytime soon, even with tariffs. The best skillset & capacity output is quite rare. The production should be spread around the world to ensure competition, which should reduce pricing & increase innovation but also for a robust & sustainable supply chain. I imagine it would take 5yrs+ to start new production from breaking ground to full fab, but it should be done. But not under the threat of tariffs. In an open, competitive market they'll only stimulate reciprocity & increase pricing for consumers. 😔
Oh they won’t get more expensive, just made here. It’s called a trade deficit, meaning we’re buying way more from them than they buy from us. This devalues the dollar and makes things more expensive for us because the buying power of the dollar is diminished.
Do you not realize how long it takes to set up a fab? Ignoring all the paperwork and legislation, it takes around 4 years for a fab to actually start production.
It’s funny how his supporters were shouting about bringing grocery prices down as soon as he gets in office. There's part of me that does agree that in-house production - so long as it actually helps the economy and the quality of the final product - could have merits.
It’ll not, US wage are higher, moving infrastructure especially chips one is massive and will take years to recover. Any sort of benefit of in house production is cancelled for the consumer. You’ll pay more for basically the same thing for everything.

They're probably gonna just pass the costs of tariffs to consumers. And even if they start producing chips in the US, they probably won't reduce the price since corporate greed.
I don't know who needs to hear this but Tariff means import tax. China doesn't pay import taxes, they aren't buying things from themselves are they? You do. You pay the Tariffs.

At least he doesn't think to slap tariff on ASML product. They can literally say don't care and US fab would be in massive disadvantage in production cost as they need to buy ASML. When you're the sole producer of EUV machine the tariff doesn't matter to you. For TSMC they're dominant but not monopoly so it's likely that lost TSMC market share will be moved toward Samsung Korean fab instead of US fab as intel fab isn't really in great shape right now because they suck and no advanced process fab is being built in the US (TSMC and Samsung).

Yeah, its a great way to try to get TSMC to reduce their fab presence in Taiwan and therefore reduce risk of Chinese invasion and WW3.

Tsmc is not moving to the usa.
So have fun with the crazy prices guys.
IIRC Zotac relocated to the US because of these tariffs, but for a company like TSMC, it'll take a huge hit if they'll have to move from Taipei to a city like Los Angeles or any other US city.
TSMC has a strategic reason to be in Taiwan. The way everyone relies on Taiwan on making chips means if they get attacked they'll be protected by others
So there gonna ignore the worlds largest market

They'll probably do what they always do. Help some local muppet build a factory. Send their own people to "learn the process". Then build the same factory at home and outprice the "local muppet" my a mile. People never learn though. Seen it done and ruin a good business a couple of times over here in the old world already.

The goal is to have more production in America, which will cause prices to go down due to cheaper supply chain.
We really didn't...
@@nfectorlite its crazy how no economist had ever figured that out. it took a reality TV star to put the pieces together... you are bonkers.
This just means companies will start needing to assemble and create the chips in the US and sell them abroad instead of giving money to Taiwan for it them. temporarily you'll see a hike in prices until chips can be manufactured in the US
Except labor costs are more expensive in the us. So prices will still be higher
@elan425 that is true, but if the US can send these parts to other countries then they can pass the cost on to them and offer the parts at a cheaper price. Look at Intel, they're already in the US and the prices are similar to Amd
Don't forget this will give plenty of people new jobs too
TSMC is literally the biggest and best manufacturer in the world and you come up with „well the US needs to just make it themselves“
bruh 😭
@coinneachXO would you want to be forced to buy guns from a different country just because the US doesn't make them?
What happens if Taiwan decides no more chips for the US
What if the prices for the chips are decided solely on what foreign countries want to set the prices to?
This is just bad economics, someone with a basic understanding of labor division can know why this is a massively dumb idea. But it sells good, "USA will have it's own chips", what could possibly go wrong right?
Friendly reminder that: Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Company, 157 U.S. 429 (1895), affirmed on rehearing, 158 U.S. 601 (1895), was a landmark case of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Babble babble, it's actually a great power move, sure for a few years prices will hike, but... If the US is no longer dependent on Taiwan for security essential high tech or has to guarantee Taiwanese security from China... That's a huge win. Buy a PC now skip a gen and you will be good, hopefully in that time they might release a game worth upgrading for.
@kzs831 holy sh*t the delusion is immense. It would take more than a few YEARS for almost everything to change. These tarrifs aren't gonna bring back any significant jobs. Companies will move production to countries we haven't tariffed, but not here. Prices WONT come back down from this either. Covid showed that.
Giving Taiwan to China is the opposite of a power move. They're America's biggest competitor and enemy. This will just give them more tech and power. America's is weaker for this, permanently. Even if this is reversed, the damage is done.
This isn't done for America, it wasn't done for you or me. It was done to solidify the divide between rich and poor. It's the next step into turning us, as in you and me and everyone else, into peasants.
He doesn't care about America, he doesn't care about you. He cares about making him and the other billionaires richer. That's what this is for.

Awesome. Great.
Fuckin perfect.
PHAROH! WE NEED AN ADULT!
“Now talking about?” This was talked about a few years ago
This comment section is full of bots.
Oh they won’t get more expensive, just made here. It’s called a trade deficit, meaning we’re buying way more from them than they buy from us. This devalues the dollar and makes things more expensive for us because the buying power of the dollar is diminished.
As if the US dollar doesn’t dominate the world and dictate most of the world economy, lmao
Do you not realize how long it takes to set up a fab? Ignoring all the paperwork and legislation, it takes around 4 years for a fab to actually start production.
It’s funny how his supporters were shouting about bringing grocery prices down as soon as he gets in office. But now all of a sudden they are all talking about “the long term” effects of tariffs and how prices will get more expensive in the short term but it will be better in the long term. I bet we’ll start seeing posts about how patriotic it is to pay higher prices for groceries soon.
What a clown show.
Woohoo what's hurt technological progression!

TSMC also has a plant due to come on line this year in America so could be timed to be perfectly fine for them.
One plant will not be enough when 99% of their plants are outside the US
Rich people don't care that much about tariffs because 25% of $500 doesn't matter that much when your annual income is $200 000.
I gotta be honest, 200,000 doesn’t make you rich in most major cities. When rent it around 3-4 grand a month and taxes are though the roof. I don’t think anyone who makes less than 500k annually in a populated area in the US could be considered “rich” the economy is fucking nuts
@davidkillian4426 Well... That's crazy. I'm Canadian though... Why mean I thought I Canadian dollars, which worth less than US.
They're probably gonna just pass the costs of tariffs to consumers. And even if they start producing chips in the US, they probably won't reduce the price since corporate greed.

Not Taiwan! 😭😭 How could you do em dirty like that maaaan, what do heck?!
The problem is exactly that, all made at TSMC and where is TSMC?
And now we have a new added problem. Prices will be insane and Intel will just match it at just below for a no better product. Tarrifs don't work
TSMC is in a modern first world democracy who is a close ally of the United States.
@ Not an ally. As the former head of AIT(American Institute in Taiwan) Sandra Oudkirk once stated on a Taiwanese TV show while she was still in that post.
remember its not that we cant afford it, its the company that cant sell it
We're gonna die (our wallets)
At least he doesn't think to slap tariff on ASML product. They can literally say don't care and US fab would be in massive disadvantage in production cost as they need to buy ASML. When you're the sole producer of EUV machine the tariff doesn't matter to you. For TSMC they're dominant but not monopoly so it's likely that lost TSMC market share will be moved toward Samsung Korean fab instead of US fab as intel fab isn't really in great shape right now because they suck and no advanced process fab is being built in the US (TSMC and Samsung).
he will probably impose tariffs on South Korea as well.
