@@LostPlaytester News flash, the US operates a chip plant that is casted to end up manufacturing MORE chips than TSMC is actively doing. The idea here is that the tariffs make companies STOP outsourcing manufacturing abroad and push them to invest heavily into the US and stop blowing billions on other countries (which is what has prices so astronomically high to begin with). Domestic manufacturing will always be cheaper for the consumer than foreign manufacturing; the only difference is domestic manufacturing requires the consumer to take a small price hit in the short term.
Personally, I'm fine with paying a little extra for something I know is manufactured domestically; it means its US citizens, who are paid a US wage, using US currency, making products for sale not only in the US but abroad which makes the US more money which makes everyone wealthier.

How is pushing for manufacturers to stop making the cheapest product possible in foreign countries using slave labor, going to ruin the economy? If anything, when they inevitably move manufacturing to the US (like they have already done with the chip plant in Arizona, which has bigger production turn out than TSMC does) it means more money goes into American wallets, both through domestic sales -- which will be cheaper, since we wont have to make up the insane import fees that Taiwan and China impose on US retailers -- and through job creation and the massive economic impacts those new jobs create by allowing areas that employ those workers to have more cash flowing through their local economies. This is only a loss if you are in support of China maintaining a hold on manufacturing for some reason; which in of itself is being in support of slave labor lol

Friendly reminder that: Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Company, 157 U.S. 429 (1895), affirmed on rehearing, 158 U.S. 601 (1895), was a landmark case of the Supreme Court of the United States. In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the income tax imposed by the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act for being an unapportioned direct tax. The decision was superseded in 1913 by the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which allows Congress to levy income taxes without apportioning them among the states.
Also in the Constituition itself protected us from unapportioned taxes. But the passage of the 16th Amendment, the revenue act of 1913 and the Federal Reserve act in 1913 all guaranteed we’d suffer while the old men that passed those laws lived like kings.

@kzs831 holy sh*t the delusion is immense. It would take more than a few YEARS for almost everything to change. These tarrifs aren't gonna bring back any significant jobs. Companies will move production to countries we haven't tariffed, but not here. Prices WONT come back down from this either. Covid showed that.
Giving Taiwan to China is the opposite of a power move. They're America's biggest competitor and enemy. This will just give them more tech and power. America's is weaker for this, permanently. Even if this is reversed, the damage is done.
This isn't done for America, it wasn't done for you or me. It was done to solidify the divide between rich and poor. It's the next step into turning us, as in you and me and everyone else, into peasants.

Virtually everything that has a semi conductor in it is produced in the most economic countries to produce them, so it's doubtful the Far East will be superceded anytime soon, even with tariffs. The best skillset & capacity output is quite rare.
The production should be spread around the world to ensure competition, which should reduce pricing & increase innovation but also for a robust & sustainable supply chain.
I imagine it would take 5yrs+ to start new production from breaking ground to full fab, but it should be done.
But not under the threat of tariffs. In an open, competitive market they'll only stimulate reciprocity & increase pricing for consumers. 😔

At least he doesn't think to slap tariff on ASML product. They can literally say don't care and US fab would be in massive disadvantage in production cost as they need to buy ASML. When you're the sole producer of EUV machine the tariff doesn't matter to you. For TSMC they're dominant but not monopoly so it's likely that lost TSMC market share will be moved toward Samsung Korean fab instead of US fab as intel fab isn't really in great shape right now because they suck and no advanced process fab is being built in the US (TSMC and Samsung).

the TSMC stuff in the US would still need to go through customs (and thus pay import duties), so that's not going to work.
