  • Andrew faces daily challenges from his Bardet-Biedl syndrome. He looks up to Todd Helton, a slugger on the Colorado Rockies. Physical limitations hinder his ability to play baseball, but he pushes himself to run the bases, and gets his wish granted to be a Colorado Rocky.
"My Wish" is a collaborative effort with Make-A-Wish that chronicles the granting of unique sports-related wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Make-A-Wish® grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories, on average, every 38 minutes. We believe that a wish experience can be a game-changer. This one belief guides us. It inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve.

My brother Andrew was the greatest. So much pain, only thing he ever took was aleve. There's no more pain where he is now. I'm so happy he got his wish granted. Make a wish is one of the best organizations out there. I.H.S. was the company that funded my little bro's wish. Thank-you to them and to Make A Wish. Forever in my heart brother

Your brother was a brave young man. I seen this story back in 2006 and I remember being a 20 year old balling my eyes out at 6am watching it. I still think about your brother to this day and how he made me a better person and showed me other people have it way worse than I do and still have the best outlooks on life. Your brother is in heaven now. I wish I could have 1/10 of the courage and strength he did. God bless him.

I don’t know precisely why, but this one has stuck with me from all the wonderful stories told through this series. The love and pride of the family and the fighting spirit of a child who persevered through not letting a terrible disease fully rob him of the joy and innocence of sports at his age are inspiring. I know Andrew has passed, but that young man left a mark on all who have watched this story.
Thank you, Andrew. Every kid likes the slugger on his favorite team growing up. I’m sure Todd Helton remembers this day fondly.

Very sad this young man passed away. It was great that the Rockies helped grant him his wish. I found the obituary for him.
Andrew Keith "Andy" Pointer, 14, of Gillette, Wyo., died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, due to complications from numerous health issues.
He was born Oct. 10, 1994, in Sheridan, Wyo., to Kent and Sue Pointer. He attended Pronghorn and Wagonwheel elementary schools in Gillette and was a freshman at Twin Spruce Junior High School at the time of his death. He was honored to help the coaches of the Twin Spruce wrestling team, was thrilled to be part of a school sports team and was excited when he was part of a trophy ceremony with them.
Andy was a Camel and Roughrider baseball fan, always had a portable radio tuned to a local sports team and loved all the Denver sports teams, especially the Colorado Rockies. In June 2006, the Rockies granted him a "Make-a Wish," where he signed a rookie contract with the team and lived his lifelong dream of becoming a Colorado Rockie. As Number 15, he hit T-balls at Coors Field with Todd Helton. Pre-game, he joined Clint Hurdle and all of his Rockies teammates in the clubhouse. At home, he loved to hit T-balls for his dog, Daisy. He also loved playing games with his family and playing Xbox.
Survivors include his parents, a brother, Joshua, and a sister, Leslie, all of Gillette; and his grandparents, Floyd and Glenda Pointer of Holcomb, and Dorothy Edwards of Sterling, Colo. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Edwards

Good choice of player. I grew up watching Todd Helton, being from Knoxville. He went to Central HS here in Knox and then stayed to go to college here. Me and my dad used to go watch him play and he was my favorite player. Even got the opportunity to be trained by him a bit during the baseball seminars they held at the time for kids interested in baseball. Now he's back here as a player development guy. Love having him back in Knox, outstanding guy. Also, r.i.p to Andrew. Unfortunate you were taken so soon from us.

This kid is such a sweetheart. He wants to run the bases when he hits the ball. Such a great kid. I love to see these kids, for one day at least out of their whole lives of pain, have a big smile on their faces. This disease he has sounds terrible. God bless ya kid. Not many people have that type of strength to just wake up and do what he does every day.
