So awesome to see a young person working on these classics. Brings back memories of when I was 15. What we could have done with RUclips. I had hot rod magazines and my dad’s huge chiltons manual
Couldn't agree more!
i learned it in high school autoshop
About to rebuild the front end on my 68 cougar. It’s turning into a huge case of the “while you’re in there” 😂
Thank for all the info!
It’s that way with everything on these cars 😂 My 68 Cougar is the same
We are very good at inducing that...
Following your channel inspired me to buy a 1979 F-150. Thank you all for making these videos I've learned quite a lot.
That is awesome!
Great job Jeff, especially on those springs. I have a spring compressor that mounts to the spring perch (saddle) that works great. The pucker factor is still there but I have never had great luck with the hook type that you used. My spring compressor is just sitting around now, let me know if you ever want to borrow it for your 73. Thanks for the video, keep them coming.
Thanks for the kind words! Oh I'm sure there will be more...
I’ve got a lot more cleaning to do up front before I start to install the new stuff so it’s very cool to get a preview of what it’ll look like. Plus I have to weld up the holes a previous owner put in the shock towers so they could grease the suspension 😕
Those holes are a PITA. I have walked away from buying cars because they are there...
Good information. Wish I had seen this before I rebuilt my frontend.
Now you have experience and my experience to use next time.
It's not just these cars alignment shops don't want to touch, it's old cars in general. I had a heck of a time getting someone to align Dale the Truck.
Yup. Most shops won't buy the alignment programing for cars older than the '80s. And techs don't know how to do the alignment using custom specs.
RE: Your comment about welding skill, or lack thereof, I'm in the same boat. I finally realized a large part of my problem was not enough light. Yes, I know the arc is ultra mega bright but I cannot see what I'm doing unless I have even more light on the subject. I'm still well below average at the task but at least I can do it. Well, to some extent anyway.
We do that too.
For everybody on the fence about upgrading the suspension on their early Ford, the camber kit, roller spring perches and adjustable strut rods (I prefer the hiem joint version) are must haves for any old SLA suspension. All this installed along with the Shelby drop makes a night and day difference in handling once the alignment is dialed in. Worth every penny for the extra parts. Add some Koni red gas shocks, good set of springs and some decent tires and bam..Race Car! Or a predictable and fun driver that no longer pushes through corners like an overloaded milk truck.
Not sure what’s available for the ranchero but will you be installing any kind of bracing up front like a Monte Carlo bar, export brace and Boss 302 style crossmember similar to what’s used on mustangs? The extra stiffness from the bracing prevents flexing and really keeps the alignment in check during hard cornering.
It is already wearing the engine crossmember, I will be doing some additional bracing at the area where a torque box should be. MIGHT show that on the channel, depends on how far I throw the first set I make. LOL We are going to brace the area where the stock tower braces are too.
Thanks for including the torque specs!!
You bet!
When removing the spring compressor I use a zip tie to hold the ears together and reach down from the top with a strong magnet or hook to pull it up. That way I’m not fighting to keep the ears from hanging up on the coils
Good idea!
Great videos! Keep up the good work...looking forward to seeing that Ranchero go for a drive.
Thanks! You and me both!
I couldn't get enough squash out of my spring compressor to install my new springs last summer for love or money. I made one the type that uses the the spring perch and the top of the shock tower and it worked nifty and seemed to be ( at least in my mind) a lot safer.
I am going to order one of those from www.autokrafters.com to show on the '64 Hardtop suspension removal.
@@AutoRestoMod I just made 1 out of junk I had laying around the shop..on a side note I had to have the upper control arm off and put it in place after I compressed the spring...not sure if that would be the case in all situations...I was rebuilding the front end so it was already off ..so no biggie.
Another great video mate. It would be great to show others why a spring perch HAS to go in the way that you have shown. Put a shock in the mount and move the control arm right up. yeah it will break the bottom shock mount. 67 mustang with rebuilt front end the advert said........
Good point! Sometimes I worry that we get to verbose. "too much, not enough: it is a hard needle to thread. So at times I cut whole sections that are too much in my head. LOL
Thanks for the videos. It helped with confidence in replacing the suspension parts on my 73 Maverick. INTERESTINGLY... One of the upper control arms were not assembled correctly. The center bar was off center by about 1/4". It was easy enough to remove the outside nuts and get it correct, HOWEVER... could installing (or making) them off center on purpose be an easy way to achieve some negative camber? Have a vendor ship you an upper control arm so you can try it and see how easy it would be.
Looks like Logan is doing a good job.
He learnerating.
Great show as always guys !
Thanks again!
Wonderful job!
Thank you! Cheers!
make sure to use a good spring compressor. if use loan a tool make sure check the thread good. i still have a scare from when i was 17 changing springs on my brothers 67 fairlane, we used a loan a tool threads stripped and spring came out almost scalped me. take time be safe.
Cannot stress that enough Dusty!
@@AutoRestoMod me and twin brother grew up in our dad body shop. Thought I got this (at 17) and bam was knocked back 10 ft thought . almost 45 and still worried about those springs on my 3 66fairlanes. Great show a lot information younger kids are not taught.
great video...and ......if it means anything
i would trust your welds on my Starliner!
You are a braver man than me.
I would like to know , did Jeff work at the Freightliner plant in Cleveland NC? In the late 80's.
Nope. I apparently have several doppelgangers, including Dean Norris of Breaking Bad fame.
When are you goign to do a complete suspension rebuild. Id like to see all the parts removed and replaced. Idler arm pitman arm, center link tie rod ends etc?

Thanks for actually demonstrating the installation of the spring itself. Can you tell me where to rent this particular spring compressor tool?
I don't think they are for rent anywhere. But the price isn't bad.
The kids got talent........
Indeed he does.
You’re right about finding shops that will align shimmed front ends. I dropped my Fairlane big block car off after being assured they do alignments on classic cars. I get a call a half hour later that they can’t get the upper control arms to move. They are brand new. I get there and it turns out the nuts are hard to get to with the 390 and factory GT manifolds so they won’t do it. What a joke these guys were. Ended up taking it to an old shop with some grey haired mechanics who had it done in 45 minutes.
Worse, a lot of shops don't have the old cars specs in the alignment machine. Ask them to do a 3 degree caster, 1/16 toe and zero camber...mind blown...
Awesome to see those new spring seats. Is it just me or has Logan's voice dropped another octave? LOL The boys are growing fast.
They are. And I think he does that on film just to sound older. LOL
Great and detailed video!
Glad you liked it!
So I have a 63 Falcon Futura V8, I just took it to a shop where a guy was willing to work on an older car. I needed a front end alignment and so I bought replacement parts for it from Car Krafters. Well, once we tried to replace the parts they did not fit. We are thinking previous owner whom I cant find had changed out front suspension. Is it possible to change a falcon suspension to say a mustang suspension. We cant find any numbers on the tie rods ect. Any suggestions on where i begin to figure this out.
Working with springs always scared me. All that stored energy waiting to release if that spring slips off the compressing tool. I see plenty of videos on compressing the springs, but none on UN-compressing the springs while they're out of the car. What the safest way to un-compress those springs? I sorta lay it on the ground, run a rope through it and tie it to a tree, get everyone out of the area, and start cranking away on the tool. Spring always seems to flex into a curve or sorta "U" shape.
I usually uncomress them like I compress them, laying flat pointing away from any part of my body accept the arm that is using the ratchet.
Poly bushings on the strut rods are generally a horrible idea. No compliance. Heimjoints like found on StreetOrTrack strut rods are a much better idea.
Yes. RRS Also carries a spherical bushing that woks very well.
would be nice if we could have CC switched on with your video's
When would you be able to show the installation of the RSS strut suspension with their lower control arms and strut rod? It would be nice to see.
That is coming as soon as we get the Fairlane off the lift...
You can do like I did rebuild the entire front end of my Cougar, and buy all ridetech stuff to do it all over again. I Hate Money 💸 I guess
LOL I've done that...and owing to what we do here, will be doing it again...
Awesome video. I will definitely be working on my 64' Ranchero and get it done. That said, plans for the wheel well? I am trying to get all that cosmetic stuff done before doing the front as to prevent any overspray. Ideas?
We will be using a Rustoleum Semi Gloss Black. Easy to get, fairly tough. We will also use 3M Body Schutz 08864 Black Undercoating - Liquid 1 qt Can and the spray applicatory, this will require compressed air.
When I installed my springs, I did exactly as you did , but mine have very little tension on the top where the shock towers mount. Should they be that loose or do I need other springs?
It depends on if the springs are a lowering spring. Also, if the car doesn't have any any engine in it, it will sit higher and could lead to it having a loose spring.. Also, make sure you put the isolator on there, and that will remove some of the looseness.
@@AutoRestoMod I forget to mention that the engine and trans were removed, and isolator was installed. That explains it, thanks for the reply.
Long story short, lost my 260 on my 1964 Ranchero. I am looking to replace it with a 302. At this point I know I'll have to replace the transmission as well. I'm not looking to race this car just restore and drive around. Would love to hear people's opinions as I am not sure if I should try to get a 302 or 4.8LS. That said, do you think I need to change my springs when swapping from a 260 to a 302?
Not unless you are adding a ton of accessories to the engine like A/C and power steering.
If you use adjustable strut rods, do you still shim the uppers to match? Or can you get all your adjustment from the rod? Thanks
All adjustment is in the rods. If you use the Camber kit, you will not need shims at all.
In the middle of rebuilding my front end and a wilwood disc brake set up on my 66 ... where do I find strut rods like you guy just installed?
www.rrs-usa.com
How timely on the springs. My 250-6 to 302 swap on the Ranchero causes me some concern. The 302 is roughly 75 lbs heavier. I wasn't going to bother changing the springs though until after the swap and see what I actually have.
Aluminum intake and heads will save you from swapping springs.
@@superduty4556 Good idea. Too bad I already spent the money on rebuilding the stock heads. I'll give it some thought though. Thanks.
I think that is a good plan. You can always go back and add better/new springs.
I'm a little unclear about what makes it OK to put poly bushings on the RRS strut rod but potentially dangerous to put poly bushings on a new OEM-spec strut rod. Could you clarify please? there are plenty of examples out there of strut rods snapped off after installing poly bushings, so it's for sure a valid issue.
The threaded end on the original style is way smaller. Thus it creates a stress point.
@@AutoRestoMod thanks for the response, that makes perfect sense. It also matches up with the normal failure mode, which is to snap off right where the end necks down.
Very niiiiiiiiiiiiice! 🍻
thank yooooou!
Put a rubber band over the claps and then pull it up.
I will cuss just as much trying to get them on the clamps. LOL
Is there a difference between a 6 cylinder spindle and an 8 cylinder spindle?
Yes. It is more...umm...spindly.
@@AutoRestoMod so you are installing a 8 cylinder spindle?
Would front front springs from a 74 Torino fit a 67 ford falcon?
Nope. Completely different cars suspension wise.
Do happen to have the part No. for the spindles?
C5DZ-3105R C5DZ-3106L we got them from www.autokrafters.com
Not much work was done here today.
Not by me...But Logan worked. Also, I am trying to break down the videos by specific tasks. Normally I gang the brakes up with the suspension.
For the love of God, please don't use power tools to compress a coil spring unless you have it properly caged. OK, I feel (somewhat) better. Carry on...
Good point.
