Keep working on accepting that our emotions do invade our lives no matter what we do it's a human condition. Try acknowledging what your body is feeling knowing it will pass. I have found that labelling my emotions and not actually absorbing them internally helps. It's taken me 4 years and a mindfulness course to begin to manage living with negatively. Thank you for this video. I myself am guilty of almost all those things but the worst for me is constantly seeking perfection in anything creative I do. Which is stopping me from doing anything creative in my life.
About #2 Recently, i read about the need for humans to validate themselves. The author suggested that this also applies to one's own opinions rather than "only" the general ego. In a way that makes us want to discuss issues, seeking feedback. This is usually healthy, because if one is the only one doing something, it should be a reason to check if it is the wrong path. However reflecting upon myself, i found that i overdiscuss many of my own chosen habits - in terms of healthy lifestyle, for example. I did this for years and i finally came to the conclusion that it was out of my own insecurity, that i wanted to discuss it or "motivate" other people to do it like me. Crazy thing is that in that moment i always thought i wanted to help them, but if i had acted and spoken out of genuine concern for their well being, im sure i would have been less missionary about it. So from now on, i aim to "live and let live" more and eat what i think is good for me. Thank you for the inspiration!

One point made in the perfection chapter is the “good enough” mindset. How good enough doesn’t equate to ‘mediocrity’, but it allows you to accept where you’re at in life, and maybe down the road you’ll be a little better. I’ve had that for a while and people around me, family involved, have always thought I just didn’t care about life or anything. I’ve always been pretty good at just accepting things. It doesn’t mean that I’m happy with the outcome, but there’s always something that can be learned in life I believe. It’s not something they’ve understood, or have tried to, and I don’t think that it’s my duty to help them understand. But that doesn’t mean that I’ll be dismissive. If it’s something they want to delve into I’m always more than happy to share my perspective with those that ask.
I just want to say that I'm really grateful for your videos as they keep me trying to understand intricacies of my life but in a way that is peaceful and constructive. I often catch myself dwelling on the past, but my method to deal with intrusive thoughts and constant rumination is to take a deep breath and try to visualize the idea of me being a unfinished artwork with its current form shaped by previous masters, and by masters I mean experiences or situations. I may require further work, I may feel not good enough, but todays me, while imperfect, is still in a process of "making", perfecting, polishing and it's still beautiful in its own way. I don't know if it's stoic approach but it's heplful to me.

@@stoicbond hey thanks for the response, the only technique that I've been using is to limit my time to dwell by keeping myself busy with school or hobbies, like art and carving.
The problem for me is living in the past. Ive lost everyone, my family has long since shes its mortal coil if you will and im still working through this. Every day it's smells, sound, or just out of the blue, smiles of my sister, some joke i had with my father, the look of sadness from my mother as she withered from cancer. In my dreams i see my pets playing and coming to me all happy, the warmth against my shoulders as my father hugs me. Telling me its time to wake up. I dwell in the past for i have nothing left.

Stoicism teaches acceptance and understanding our own reactions, but it does not dismiss the very real pain and grief we go through. It's okay to cherish memories and feel the weight of loss. @@stoicbondsometimes you have to allow yourself regular time to face the memories in order to internalize, and eventually move beyond them. It is notable that you cannot let them consume you. Set an alarm to help arrest your wandering mind if this is a problem. Eventually, you will think on it less as a matter of course. The memories will get no smaller, but your experiences will grow, and eventually they will be minor by comparison.
About the importance of journalling. My past overshadowed and influenced my present up until recently. Although I consciously tried to face painful hurdles, not shirking away from issues, I still couldn't come to grips with it (my past). So I finally wrote it all down, listing the significant and often tragic events as well as my work history. My Memoirs. A small booklet (!) At first in my mother tongue and then again in English. This process , which included repeated editing, was like an exorcism. The pain, anger, a.s.o., when reading it over and over, subsided. Tough process but it brought much peace of mind. Now the challenge is to enjoy it without guilt. I have always been an introspective person, trying to gain insights to help recognise patterns, based on negative childhood " programming". Coming to accept one's life story and value its lessons is an intricate process but I really regret nothing anymore. Mistakes? No, learning.

Love the philosophy. We take it one day at a time but then we have to retell a story of our past. That’s crazy. I’m recovering one day at a time in the here and now.
one thing I find interesting, some people, depending on how they develop and evolve through life, may discover some of these teachings by themselves. I learned about not dwelling on things I can't control on my own by myself, I also learned that validation was something that tended to make you sentimental, frail, melancholic in the long run since there was no guarantee that life would give you what you seek. However I still held that social status was something important and this was the final straw that kept me perpetually unhappy with myself. Only after I learned of stoicism did I finally become truly happy

@@stoicbond Maybe kinda long, tho as an author, brevity isn’t my forte (thus the $1k+ for my copy editor!) My best is to practice NOT getting emotional on the downside, but definitely do so on the up-more so for other people’s successes, triumphs, displays of endurance & resiliency. I believe to have that POV is partially inborn, tho mostly by practice-especially when your own life is not going so well, despite doing things mostly right. Surely shouldn’t be the reason, it truly is a great feeling when people recognize it-& that *it’s authentic-as it’s rare. I always put it ‘there’s not a small box out there in the either of success that you doing well somehow takes away from me’ so why not celebrate others successes?’ Often people are visibly surprised, certainly in NYC where competition for anything is fierce.
A lot of the Stoic philosophy videos which use AI voice overs or images come off as hacky or misguided. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at your body of work brother. Please keep going 🙏🙏

Whenever I reflect on a certain peaceful time of my past...I get a happy feeling that I want to hang onto. I benefit from this dream state of mind. How does a stoic remain humble? it seems to me that in the search for mind resilience, many stoics may end up staying too long inside their own heads, overcoming their desire for validation and finding peace within themselves, but stoics are going to be eccentric no matter what, most people are going to find us different. How not to think of ourselves so much when it is this inner dialogue that keeps us healthy? How can we avoid being judgemental, when we see people being clearly unhappy doing what we used to do as non-stoics? More importantly, how can we teach others about stoicism without pushing it to the side of preaching? One Stoic teaching that has had a profound impact on my life is the emphasis on controlling one's emotions. While all Stoic teachings have their value, the practice of emotional control has been especially transformative for me. Stoicism teaches us that we have the power to choose how we react to external events, and that our emotions are, to a large extent, within our control. This has helped me navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and equanimity. By my understanding of this teaching, it's not about being hard or emotionless, but rather about discerning what is truly worth our emotional energy and what is not. It has made me more empathetic to the virtues of life. I've learned to appreciate the importance of focusing on what's within my control, such as my thoughts and actions, while letting go of unnecessary emotional reactions to things beyond my control. This practice has allowed me to maintain a steady, calm mind in the face of adversity, and to respond to situations with wisdom and composure. While I do still fail sometimes to live like the Stoic teachings, I do my best to live by what I've learned. It's an ongoing journey, and I'm continually working on applying these principles in my life.

I’m doing really well with these lessons. But Im still on this cycle of slowly building up satisfaction and pride in myself Without the validation of a pretty girl, until that way of being attracts a pretty girl, and then I slowly start needing validation from the pretty girl Again… until I lose that validation and start the whole cycle again.

This reminds me of taoism a lot, and DBT which is a modern therapy usually used for BPD. Edit: i have bdp and adhd which both lead to poor impulse control. I have a really bad problem with gluttony and doing things for in the moment pleasure. This has lead to a less than ideal relationship with alcohol and money

Keep working on accepting that our emotions do invade our lives no matter what we do it's a human condition.
Try acknowledging what your body is feeling knowing it will pass. I have found that labelling my emotions and not actually absorbing them internally helps. It's taken me 4 years and a mindfulness course to begin to manage living with negatively. Much love and good wishes

Recently, i read about the need for humans to validate themselves. The author suggested that this also applies to one's own opinions rather than "only" the general ego. In a way that makes us want to discuss issues, seeking feedback. This is usually healthy, because if one is the only one doing something, it should be a reason to check if it is the wrong path.
However reflecting upon myself, i found that i overdiscuss many of my own chosen habits - in terms of healthy lifestyle, for example. I did this for years and i finally came to the conclusion that it was out of my own insecurity, that i wanted to discuss it or "motivate" other people to do it like me. Crazy thing is that in that moment i always thought i wanted to help them, but if i had acted and spoken out of genuine concern for their well being, im sure i would have been less missionary about it.
So from now on, i aim to "live and let live" more and eat what i think is good for me.

I would appreciate if your team published a guided mindfulness meditation. Several videos discuss doing them, and a I believe it was the morning or evening habits that briefly described how to do it. A video that your listeners can play specifically for their meditations could be a helpful resource.

One point made in the perfection chapter is the “good enough” mindset. How good enough doesn’t equate to ‘mediocrity’, but it allows you to accept where you’re at in life, and maybe down the road you’ll be a little better. I’ve had that for a while and people around me, family involved, have always thought I just didn’t care about life or anything. I’ve always been pretty good at just accepting things. It doesn’t mean that I’m happy with the outcome, but there’s always something that can be learned in life I believe. It’s not something they’ve understood, or have tried to, and I don’t think that it’s my duty to help them understand. But that doesn’t mean that I’ll be dismissive. If it’s something they want to delve into I’m always more than happy to share my perspective with those that ask.
I just want to say that I'm really grateful for your videos as they keep me trying to understand intricacies of my life but in a way that is peaceful and constructive.
I often catch myself dwelling on the past, but my method to deal with intrusive thoughts and constant rumination is to take a deep breath and try to visualize the idea of me being a unfinished artwork with its current form shaped by previous masters, and by masters I mean experiences or situations. I may require further work, I may feel not good enough, but todays me, while imperfect, is still in a process of "making", perfecting, polishing and it's still beautiful in its own way. I don't know if it's stoic approach but it's heplful to me.

I live in the past too often, this hurts me in the moment. It affects my mood and I need to change it, overindulgence as well. I eat a lot and end up feeling gross after. This video helps in making a plan to work on these unhealthy habits.

@@stoicbond hey thanks for the response, the only technique that I've been using is to limit my time to dwell by keeping myself busy with school or hobbies, like art and carving.
The problem for me is living in the past. Ive lost everyone, my family has long since shes its mortal coil if you will and im still working through this. Every day it's smells, sound, or just out of the blue, smiles of my sister, some joke i had with my father, the look of sadness from my mother as she withered from cancer. In my dreams i see my pets playing and coming to me all happy, the warmth against my shoulders as my father hugs me. Telling me its time to wake up. I dwell in the past for i have nothing left.

@@stoicbondsometimes you have to allow yourself regular time to face the memories in order to internalize, and eventually move beyond them.
It is notable that you cannot let them consume you. Set an alarm to help arrest your wandering mind if this is a problem.
Eventually, you will think on it less as a matter of course. The memories will get no smaller, but your experiences will grow, and eventually they will be minor by comparison.
About the importance of journalling. My past overshadowed and influenced my present up until recently. Although I consciously tried to face painful hurdles, not shirking away from issues, I still couldn't come to grips with it (my past). So I finally wrote it all down, listing the significant and often tragic events as well as my work history. My Memoirs. A small booklet (!) At first in my mother tongue and then again in English. This process , which included repeated editing, was like an exorcism. The pain, anger, a.s.o., when reading it over and over, subsided. Tough process but it brought much peace of mind. Now the challenge is to enjoy it without guilt. I have always been an introspective person, trying to gain insights to help recognise patterns, based on negative childhood " programming". Coming to accept one's life story and value its lessons is an intricate process but I really regret nothing anymore. Mistakes? No, learning.

Too be honest I have no regrets and I'm completely content with my Decisions.i treated my mother well ,I raised my children and I quit smoking.
The ego is hard to overcome. But we can do it.
I am actively working on a more peaceful , meaningful way of life. I also work for 988, suicide prevention, and talk to so many daily who can use these to find peace. I will be suggesting this page as much as I can. Thank you for sharing these lessons

one thing I find interesting, some people, depending on how they develop and evolve through life, may discover some of these teachings by themselves. I learned about not dwelling on things I can't control on my own by myself, I also learned that validation was something that tended to make you sentimental, frail, melancholic in the long run since there was no guarantee that life would give you what you seek. However I still held that social status was something important and this was the final straw that kept me perpetually unhappy with myself. Only after I learned of stoicism did I finally become truly happy

@@stoicbond Maybe kinda long, tho as an author, brevity isn’t my forte (thus the $1k+ for my copy editor!) My best is to practice NOT getting emotional on the downside, but definitely do so on the up-more so for other people’s successes, triumphs, displays of endurance & resiliency. I believe to have that POV is partially inborn, tho mostly by practice-especially when your own life is not going so well, despite doing things mostly right.
Surely shouldn’t be the reason, it truly is a great feeling when people recognize it-& that *it’s authentic-as it’s rare. I always put it ‘there’s not a small box out there in the either of success that you doing well somehow takes away from me’ so why not celebrate others successes?’ Often people are visibly surprised, certainly in NYC where competition for anything is fierce.
All of these I need to work on. But persuit of excess plessure is a big one for me. Food and drugs are my weakness.
A lot of the Stoic philosophy videos which use AI voice overs or images come off as hacky or misguided. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at your body of work brother. Please keep going 🙏🙏

Hi...I enjoyed learning about the useful habits. However, I disagree with one habit concerning living in the past. Whenever I reflect on a certain peaceful time of my past...I get a happy feeling that I want to hang onto. I benefit from this dream state of mind. However on the flip side of things...I don't want to remember the sad and hard times I've experienced.

@@stoicbondI definitely believe it can (and does) influence our moods. The one you are using for these videos really helps me focus. There are several videos on RUclips regarding stoicism but some use music that I feel is distracting from the subject matter. The one you are using here is relaxing and peaceful. A perfect fit! Don’t change it!

And yes they have made a vast improvement in not only my life but those of my family and many of my clients. How does a stoic remain humble? it seems to me that in the search for mind resilience, many stoics may end up staying too long inside their own heads, overcoming their desire for validation and finding peace within themselves, but stoics are going to be eccentric no matter what, most people are going to find us different. How not to think of ourselves so much when it is this inner dialogue that keeps us healthy? How can we avoid being judgemental, when we see people being clearly unhappy doing what we used to do as non-stoics? More importantly, how can we teach others about stoicism without pushing it to the side of preaching? I find myself that one of the hardest battles is knowing how to balance things, and knowing what you are doing is a perk not a requirement. What are you guy's thoughts on this?

One Stoic teaching that has had a profound impact on my life is the emphasis on controlling one's emotions. While all Stoic teachings have their value, the practice of emotional control has been especially transformative for me. Stoicism teaches us that we have the power to choose how we react to external events, and that our emotions are, to a large extent, within our control. This has helped me navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and equanimity.
By my understanding of this teaching, it's not about being hard or emotionless, but rather about discerning what is truly worth our emotional energy and what is not. It has made me more empathetic to the virtues of life. I've learned to appreciate the importance of focusing on what's within my control, such as my thoughts and actions, while letting go of unnecessary emotional reactions to things beyond my control. This practice has allowed me to maintain a steady, calm mind in the face of adversity, and to respond to situations with wisdom and composure.
While I do still fail sometimes to live like the Stoic teachings, I do my best to live by what I've learned. It's an ongoing journey, and I'm continually working on applying these principles in my life.

This reminds me of taoism a lot, and DBT which is a modern therapy usually used for BPD.
Edit: i have bdp and adhd which both lead to poor impulse control. I have a really bad problem with gluttony and doing things for in the moment pleasure. This has lead to a less than ideal relationship with alcohol and money
