  • Reaction and analysis to VoicePlay singing "Phantom of the Opera," a musical originally performed on Broadway. VoicePlay used their innovative musicality and transformed the Broadway musical number into an a cappella hit!
The reaction and analysis in the video is done by a former singer, Jeffrey Hack, who sang at Arizona State University in an a cappella group called "Devil Clefs". While singing with the Devil Clefs, he performed Phantom of the Opera for ICCA, the Southwest Quarter Finals for College A Cappella. VoicePlay's a cappella version inspired the "Devil Clefs" to arrange their own version of the song, which they took to ICCA and performed.
As Jeffrey reacts and analyzes VoicePlay singing Phantom of the Opera, he reminises his time performed with the Devil Clefs.

    Jeffrey's comments:
VoicePlay is a theatrical, energetic a cappella group that blows us all away with their innovative a cappella arrangements showcasing music theatre numbers. Phantom of the Opera has to be one of my favorite arrangements by them only because it's the main song that introduced me to the group. An outstanding arrangement to do so too!
This a cappella music video includes excellent execution of vocal harmonies, vocal blending and dynamics, and vocal percussion. Of course, this music video couldn't have been put together with their great production team.... THEMSELVES! That's right! I learned that VoicePlay puts all of their music videos together by themselves instead of hiring a professional film production company to help them. Completely understandable too!

The dramatic side of VoicePlay is what sets them apart and the fact that they do (almost) everything themselves, from the concept to the editing. It keeps it tight. And of course, the voices. And the fun.

Rachel isn't a part of the group but she has collaborated with them more than anyone else. Two of the people in this video have since left the group. The baritone, Tony Wakim, who does the Phantom part & is the one talking at the end left the group in late 2016 to focus on the production company he owns with Layne (beatboxer) and Earl Elkins, the high tenor, left just over a year ago for personal reasons. Geoff has mentioned that this was one of his favorite bass lines to sing.

That's a shame... but the show must go on! Geoff's bassline is incredible in this song.

Low key I'd listen to an entire production of phantom with them as Christin and phantom.. they're so good together. And so talented

Rachel is incredible, she's been friends with them for a long time and she's been the most featured in her videos, they even have a playlist in their channel of their covers with Rachel. You should do the Little Mermaid Medley or Moana Medley next.

That sounds like fun! I'm sure they killed it with the Little Mermaid Medley!

As a kid in San Francisco we'd go on field trips to Alcatraz and the Exploritorium and the SF Opera House and the like, so I grew up with some knowledge of plays and operas even if that type of music was never really my thing. Whenever I'd hear this number it was "oh, that's nice, let me listen to this, but once it was over I'd just go back to my rock and metal, etc. But this rendition of Phantom has me totally under its spell. And your insight on it and joy in make it twice as wonderful. VP is my second favorite a cappella group and their frequent lineup changes makes it hard to have a long time favorite (sorry, Cesar, but Austin's forever #1), but as long as they produce gems like this, I'm here.

Saw you had a fair number of Queen but not Freddie Mercury's solo "Time Waits for No One" released 3 or 4 years ago. It was created for a play and the writer wanted Mercury to be in it. Freddie turned him down but did the solo for him.

This is so creepy that I find it hard to watch. I've seen everything they've done probably dozens of times... not this one. This is the third time I've listened to it. Appreciated your reaction to it! (Layne wrote this arrangement)

The arrangement is amazing, but I can understand if you got creeped out from the music video. The phantom mask is pretty freaky!
