Personally I think this face shield for driving around in a car and running a few errands is taking things too far. Maybe if someone is out sailing all day, but in a car when you already have SPF is over the top.

what about some vit D? this looks a little compulsive

    • @oheyrenee

But the UVA rays still come in through the windows. Have you ever seen the picture of the professional truck driver whose left side of the face looked significantly older than the right? If you’re in your car a lot, and your skin is important to you, then this is an option for you. As for vitamin D, eat fortified foods or take supplements if you aren’t getting enough. Vitamin D has never been a problem for me, and I avoid the sun as much as possible.

@suripopje In no way did I even suggest whether or not this is socially unacceptable. I do believe it's overkill for driving around in a car with the short days of winter when a sunscreen has already been adequately applied. I did say I could understand someone wearing if they were out on water all day in the summer.

To add a perspective here... I have a form of Skin Lupus that is very photoreactive (aka UVA causes red flakey lesions). I'm a sunscreen and broad rimmed hat ninja but I still tend to develop lesions on my left ear and eyebrow (where the sunscreen isn't as consistently 'thick') from the UV I get from the side window in the car where I don't wear my hat. I know it's my 'condition' but you do get UV in the car.
It really comes down to a choice of how much risk you are willing to take with UV exposure, just like how much sugar you eat or do supposedly bad things. BTW not going to check out her face shield. My first thought was OMG look at how exposed her ears are!!! Ha ha.

My fashionable grandmother had the best skin... but didn’t wear an odd looking hospital mask. She wore a scarf, and hat and good old fashioned and very chic thick cotton gloves. She never got a cold because wearing those beautiful gloves, you shake hands with people, etc. and then only touch your face after removing gloves. She always used utensils as well. Think how many times we all touch the TV controller , a doorknob etc. and then eat chips with the same hands that touched those germ covered places! Anyway, grandma always looked like Grace Kelly and protected her skin at the same time.

Are people really so obsessed with not getting wrinkles? You may have noticed that everybody has them, and they are happy or unhappy regardless! If it were for health reasons, if you work outdoors or are a professional driver for example, then I would totally understand. Eventually skin will inevitably get saggy, even if you manage somehow to stay out of the sun. And saggy skin ages way more than wrinkles. At last, a smooth face won't make you beautiful, and a wrinkly face won't make you ugly. This is my opinion. sorry for the vent, but this seems so over the top.

I agree, my job requires me to be out in the sun during the summer 8-10 hours a day. I apply sunscreen when I can, but as a landscaper I'm so busy I usually forget. To me, this is EXTREME. Everyone will acquire wrinkles. Just live your life and accept that everyone ages. This would make me miserable. I'd rather be happy with wrinkles, than in constant fear of the sun with no wrinkles at all. Not everyone has the luxury of working indoors 24/7. Just my 2 cents

All their kids were full cover swimwear in the pool. Japanese sunscreens are the best. It just looks elegant and their skin is testament to the effort. Never seen them wearing a mask though. She ALWAYS put on sunscreen, broad rimmed hat, UV shield umbrella, sunglasses, and most importantly, she NEVER goes out WITHOUT wearing a face shield. Now no kidding, at 57, she has been mistaken for my sister for so many times that I lost count, because she indeed looks just 30+ (genetics help too I guess). I used to laugh at how OTT she was when it comes to sun protection, but I start to do the same now LOL. Trust me you won't regret it, wearing face shield. Cannot recommend deliberate sun exposure as a safe means of getting vitamin D. A few points to consider are that:1. You can get vitamin D from other sources, such as your diet and supplements2. It is a fact that UV light from the sun causes skin cancer3. Much of the evidence regarding health benefits of high levels of vitamin D require much more research to define what the optimum levels are and how best to achieve these levels.
While there is a rise in the number of people with "low" vitamin D, there is a more substantial rise in the number of UV-related skin cancers, not only in the uS, but in Europe, Canada, Asia, and Australia. Clearly, people are getting plenty of UV as they are getting UV skin cancers.

The public health system in the UK (where obviously we have much less sun than you do all year round) does recommend Vitamin D supplementation for all . There are also studies implicating low Vitamin D in autoimmune conditions-my rheumatologist was recommending supplementation many years ago before the general medical community was doing so. Just make it vitamin D3 not D2.

Dr. Dray, one of the sunscreens you applied was the La Roche Posay Ultra Fluid, which is SPF 50 PPD 42. What that means is about 8 hours of protection from UVB and 7 hours of protection from UVA, unless one is sweating or toweling off.

Dr Dray, I recently decided to begin adding retinol and niacinamide to my skincare routine. I made the mistake of applying the retinol cream to my whole face as the product instructed (including all around my eyes) - my eyelids are STILL sore, red, flakey, and sensitive, and I haven't applied the retinol cream for three days. I also had applied niacinamide serum to my face during the same time frame. When my eyes became swollen and suddenly had wrinkles on them - I panicked and quit using both. Can you give me your thoughts on this? Should I reattempt the retinol cream but less frequently and avoiding the eye area? Unforunately I'm a tummy sleeper so I end up rubbing my face all over the pillow and end up with cream on my eyes anyhow. But I really want to continue using the retinol! Also, should I scrap the niacinamide or keep it up as well??

As someone struggling with melasma, I can tell you from personal experience that all the sunscreen in the world, it doesn’t matter whether it’s physical or chemical, is not enough to prevent sun exposed melasma skin from getting noticeably, significantly, and distressingly darker. When I drive I need to hold something up to my face to protect the bottom third from the sun. I’ve considered getting this face mask for driving but I know that all the stares will make me very uncomfortable. That’s too bad because I need it.

Also wanted to give you a shoutout for pointing out the cotz tinted sunscreen, it goes pretty well on my dark skin and that's so hard to find. I didn’t realize you’re in Houston. I’m on the north side in Spring! I have a question about vitamin D. I greatly reduced my overall sun exposure about 11 years ago and I’ve gradually developed more and more feelings of depression. I started taking a Vitamin D supplement at the suggestion of my doctor, but the difference was only slight and I wasn’t really low on Vitamin D to begin with. Recently I’ve been spending more time in the sun each day. (About 20-30 minute and I feel more like my old self, I haven’t felt this good mentally in over 10 years. So my question is, are there any Vitamin supplements or foods with Vitamin D that closely resemble the benefits I get from vitamin D from sun exposure? Thanks!

makeup is not necessarily bad for the skin, but it does exacerbate many skin issues and skin concerns through perifollicular irritation from the metallic pigments. Around the eyes, it can cause chronic eczematous dermatitis, of a variety of types. It also complicates reapplication and consistency with sun protection. I recognized that it enhances sense of self and is beneficial to people, but I don't think it should be an expectation of women to wear makeup
