  • Eastland Center, one of the oldest malls in Michigan, has finally closed. I had one last opportunity to walk through it's halls in late October, to reminisce about the memories made there.
My apologies for the heavy breathing... I didn't realize how sensitive the mic on my phone was and, well, I'm out of shape (and I was wearing a thicker than normal facemask). LOL.

When I was 12 my buddies and I would hitchhike up Kelly to get to the mall. This placed at one time was packed. Hated to see it go but animals turn it into dangerous place to be.

This mall made up a large part of our early family life. What I remember from the Concourse area (that part going down the steps at the beginning) is 1. A post office, 2. A stamp and coin shop, 3. A shoe repair shop, and 4. Lemontree Restaurant, that my parents liked. Above ground, I also remember Sanders ice cream. It had two floors-I think the basment was more for cafe-type meals, and the surface-level area hosted soda and ice cream counter confectionaries. In the late 80s I worked at Waldenbooks. In the late 70s my sister worked at Hudsons, and later moved downtown to the admin/corporate-level sphere. In the mid-80s I attended Notre Dame (next door). In the early 90s I "worked" at Kohls while brushing up on my poetry-writing skills in the stockroom, creating general havoc by suggesting a UNION, and then went off to gradschool..One last memory-Atwater Seafood restaurant that was attached, but outside the mall on the side of 8mile. Good food. And your Taco Bell memory ar 5:40 used to be a Little Ceasers in the mid 80s...ate many little pizza there!

The Little Caesars was on the other side of the mall in what ended up turning into Montgomery Ward's entrance. The Taco Bell was built brand new in the 80's. Also the seafood restaurant was called Tidewater Grill.

Eastland Barbershop owned by Vito was the BEST. Ralph also did a wonderful job but he left in around 1994 to open his own shop out in Clinton Township. Both men have sadly passed away. When you stop and looked into the space where the barbershop was it was like "Frozen in time" Thank you for a great video especially of the concourse.

Growing up, I would get my hair cut by the ladies in that room off to the side of the main body of the barber shop. Specifically Brenda. I think I started getting my hair cut when I was old enough to not have to ride the horses. lol. Cool thing is, if you remember Brenda, she actually owns a barber shop in Grosse Pointe Woods call The Family Barbershop on Mack (between 7 & 8 mile)

I grew up on the Eastside and used to go to this mall ALL THE TIME. I remember where Shoppers World is used to be a store called Steve & Barry’s, they had all the college team gear and that’s what made me wanna go to college along with watching A Different World and other shows of course.
I remember when they had the movie theater there too I went to see the movie Speed with Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock there and they had that movie store called Suncoast right by the food court. It’s such a shame to see what this mall has become man, I guess all we can do at this point is reminisce on the good times.

That is such a shame that this mall fell on hard times and closed. I moved to Harper Woods about 4 1/2 years ago and Macy's had just closed their doors there. There was still a Burlington Coat Factory and a great little department store by the name of Shoppers World that carried many household items that had good value for the price. Also, there were still a lot of smaller well known stores and that time. Macy's leaving started a mass exodus. The mall was already struggling, but Covid just nailed the coffin shut. This is such a loss for the community.

A lot of things contributed to the downfall of that (and other) malls... primarily was the shifting shopping patterns of consumers.
