Thanks for a great and informative video. Looking into buying a MX5 this has shown me where to look and how much work is involved to fix this issue, so I will be checking this.
Lights up Lights down perfect mate. Has not skipped a beat. I had the rear sills done at Ak automotive. Full underseal done. Cars been 100%. Took me two years to find the right one but was worth the wait. MX5 restorers are a credit to the business.
I had a 91 Mk1 uk spec mx5 that had a rotten chassis rail from the floor up to where it meets the top wishbone, I sold it straight after that Mot. Now I've got a very late mk1 on a R reg that has got some mk2 bits on it like the switch gear and interior light. However the sills and rear arches need some tlc
If you haven't already done so, email us some pictures of your sills to garath@themx5restorer.co.uk, we will then be able to give you an estimate to repair
Looking at getting one in the next day or so I guess I need to go look at it again because I have not seen this.. it is a 01 with 42,000 and I'm in Georgia is that a very common problem down here in the south? Thanks for the info but now I'm freaked out :(
phenomenal video guys, however, I would have loved to have seen the actual welding you guys did! All the small alterations and etc are the things most people fall down on! But keep them coming as this was a great video with loads of expert information!
That makes sense guys, but either way awesome video. Can't wait to see more content like this that walks us MX5 owners through the common problems all of us have in detail =)
Fucking hell I can't believe how easy the hammer went through that lol. I've worked with some rusty Rickshaws but they are typically 3-5mm steel in areas and they "look" like that crusty mess you have there, but no danger you are going through it with a hammer.
Great video. Do you think your panels would perform the same as the originals in a crash situation? They seem like they could be stronger than the original metal, so might crumple differently?
Hi Rob, there is no denying that they will perform differently to standard in a crash situation, but most of them out there are now rusty and will not perform as intended. Our panels more or less revert the design back to how the Mk1's were constructed, as in a thicker single skin as apposed to 2 thinner skins.
About how many hours would you say this takes? I'm trying to put together an estimate for someone, the £600 you have on the site, does that include the rails? I'm in the USA so the conversion is about $1000
Is it realistic to find ANY Mk2 where corrosion hasn't begun? I can't see many circumstances where one wouldn't need doing by now (except for cars that were dry stored, low mileage cars and imports?)
Hiya I have that exact problem with my 2000 NB 1.6 mx5 and I'm just wondering if you would sell those templates due to it has all the fittings for the anti roll bar mounts and how much would it cost for the templates as it would save me such a head ach time and effort if I can buy them pre made many thanks ollie

Where do you source your suspension bolts from? All of my lower wishbone bolts are stuck in the bushes and need to be cut out, seems to be the case on most MX5's. Great video, would be good to see one for your front sill replacement panels, I need to pick up a pair soon!
We don't tend to need to source bolt because we have so many used items in stock. Front sills, noted, we will try to get a video done of those the next time we need to do some
Well your intentions were good but.. I can't believe that you reused those retched looking Sway Bar Brackets. The brackets are the weakest link in an otherwise great suspension. They flex and are known to break when coupled with a stronger aftermarket Sway Bar. That is my experience. For all of that work you should have replaced them with stronger aftermarket (Flyin' Miata) like I did.

I'll be placing an order soon! From New York, USA
Perfect dude, I can see a large following if you keep up this kind of video!
Great video, thank you. I have a restored NA, but if ever I fancy an NB I now know what to look for
great video, I bought a very nice 10AE off you guys. Keep saving these cars.
Hi Ian, how is the 10AE?

Just to add to this the car had its first MOT since I got it from you, passed first time, not even an advisory. Cracking car. Thank you

Wish I saw the welding but great job. Doing this very soon!
Do you sometimes have to cut forward of the front diagonal gusset? I have repair channels but have'nt started the job yet.

Love the video and gives me hope that I can get my 2002 fixed. Do you happen to ship to the States?
How do you know if the anti-roll bar mounts are straight to each other and not slightly off? that's my biggest concern
Why only cut out the outer section? Won’t the inner section rot away too as it’s still dual skin?
How is the 2 piece replacement rail more beneficial than the one piece replacement?
It has been desigined to make installation easier

Hope you don’t mind if I ask if this corrosion occurs on the MkIII MX5’s

No
Not really, we have repaired a few MK1 but there has usually been a reason for them to have rust there, such as previous accident damage.

Hi, Have a look at this link to our website www.themx5restorer.co.uk/services/welding-repairs/front-chassis-rail-repairs/

Front chassis rail repairs are normally £600 plus vat

why you went through this trouble repairing it. Just spend another 300 bucks and buy a new body
Not in the UK, ALL the cheap ones are rusty.
