Holy moly, I can't believe it. I'd be happy with ANY reaction to "The Killing". But man oh man, you didn't miss a THING. Especially the dialog! I was expecting you to definitely notice the structure, the "Kubrickian" elements, the set-pieces, the ending......but frickin' A, yeah, the classic film-noir dialog, drenched in cynicism....every time you laughed at a line, I was like "SCORE!" lol. This is pretty much his first real movie; for years it was the first one listed in his filmography (the others were super independent movies, virtually student films that were never permitted be seen by anyone. Only recently after his death do those early, inferior films get seen. "The Killing" is his first real movie). After this, he immediately vaulted to masterpiece status with "Paths Of Glory", which is tied for first place, along with all the other great Kubrick masterpieces (2001, Strangelove, Clockwork, etc). DEFINITELY do "Paths Of Glory" next! Would love to see how you react to how much he improved in just one movie. It's his best war movie, definitely better than "Full Metal Jacket" (with all due respect to FMJ!)
Refreshing to see someone review older films. So many reviewers watch the same movies. You can look at the content of 30 youtube reviewers and almost every single one of them have the same core content with just a few different movies. Also love to see how much content you have back logged on patreon. It really makes is worthwhile to subscribe to your patreon.
Strongly suggest you watch "The Asphalt Jungle" It, too, involves a rather intricate heist. Sterling Hayward (Johnny in this movie) plays a down and out low level hoodlum, who needs a big score to fulfill a life long dream. Liked your comments.
Timothy Carey (one of the greatest actors in movie history) who plays ''Nikki Arcane'', also stars in Stanley Kubrick's ''Paths of Glory'' (one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made) and in Marlon Brando's ''One-Eyed Jacks'' (one of the greatest westerns ever made, Stanley Kubrick was actually the original director).
Both Paths Of Glory and One Eyed Jacks are fantastic. Paths Of Glory is right up there with any Kubrick film, it's the only Kubrick film I've never heard a bad word said about. And "One Eyed Jacks", absolutely fantastic. I finally found a reactor who did a reaction to it (Irish Guy Reacts), but that's one that should have WAY more reactions, seeing that every channel does westerns. "One Eyed Jacks" DEFINITELY great. Only movie Brando ever directed. If Kubrick was going to be replaced by anyone, might as well be the greatest living actor making his directorial debut!
There are so many great female villains (so-called Femme Fatale) in Film-Noir movies, my favorites movies with great Femme Fatales are: ''Detour'' (1945), ''The Postman Always Rings Twice'' (1946), ''Double Indemnity'' (1944), ''Romeo is Bleeding'' (1993), ''The Last Seduction'' (1994) and of course ''The Killing'' (1956).... probably forgetting some important ones.
This is one of my favorites! You would like a wonderful 1973 neo-noir film “The Long Goodbye”,directed by Robert Altman. Elliott Gould plays Phillip Marlowe and Sterling Hayden is incredible.
Kubrick's first film is also a noir--Killer's Kiss. Not a tightly plotted crime film like this, but tough as nails and atmospheric as you could ask for.
Competency should be rewarded, but the Hays Code really ruined a lot of films/my enjoyment of many films from the era. Anyway, I took a course called The Femme Fatale In Film Noir at USF a few years ago, you’re so spot on about Marie Windsor as Sherry, she not only killed the performance but she’s the epitome of a femme fatale. The actor who played George (Elisha Cook Jr.) is one of the most prolific actors around, he’s been in damn near everything, but this was a sizable role for him. Sterling Hayden is fantastic, a favorite of mine, and I highly recommend after having seen this film, checking out The Asphalt Jungle (1950,) Dr. Strangelove (1964,) & starring Elliot Gould, The Long Goodbye (1973.)
You are by far the most eclectic film reactor on RUclips, without question.
I don’t think that’s true but he is really good. TWD reactions and AOS are especially great if you haven’t seen them.
As a Kubrick fan, nice deep dive. Thanks for giving us some cinema history.

Seriously need more reactions to older films from reactors
WOW! SO excited to watch this. One of my favs from Kubrick! Barry Lyndon is also a blast if you like this.

Wait, General Striker from Dr Strangelove or How I started to stop worry and love the bomb - another one to watch
General Ripper. ;) (Also, the corrupt police chief in "The Godfather".)
One of my favorite movies.
Fucks yes! Sterling Hayden is fucking phenomenal. Second favorite actor.
7:16 your head bobbing to the 50s tuneage - oh, there you are talking about it - i love the black and white part. The music is pretty crazy.
Definitely, you can very much see Tarantino in this.
15:20 brutal - dude, your laugh…very funny.
Third favourite movie of all time. That final line. Guts me.
6:30 Sterling Hayden was McClusky in Godfather, he also is the crazy General in Dr. Strangelove, a real legend in acting... fax!!!
Superb choice Jim, keep it going.

Never heard of this one.

A Clockwork Orange ... please.
Laura 1944 was a favorite of mine as a kid I think you’d like it :)
I saw this one years ago when I watched all the Kubrick films. Dr Strangelove has always been my fav. Comedy gold.
you should watch the recent Park Chan-wook film Decision to Leave
