Yep. I really, really loved this movie and thought it was great. Absolute crime that they cancelled the sequels. Weirdest thing was when they did a "soft reboot" of GwtDT with Girl in the Spiders' Web which was the fourth book. Why on earth would anyone go from book #1 to book #4 and think there would be any benefit from it? All of the actors in this film were perfect for their roles. Absolute travesty.
@@tonyodonnell-tv9yq I read the 2nd book (‘…Fire’), & in no way do I think the author is as artistically creative as Fincher. >NOTE: I did like the “contract negotiations” chapter of that book, though, FWIW. Never saw the series.
The Millennium trilogy is one of my favorites. Both the movies and the books because every book is basically a different genre. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is an unsolved mystery mixed with serial killer. The Girl Who Played With Fire is an action race against time and police to find the true killer ala The Fugitive. The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest is a combo espionage and trial story.
If I ran Hollywood and could do what I want I would have had Michael Mann direct “Played With Fire” and Oliver Stone in his prime direct “Hornet’s Nest” and let them run wild stylistically. The only thing I didn’t like about the Swedish versions is that they sort of ironed out the differences between the three books, presumably to unify them. That’s okay, but it would have been much more fun had they not. ☺️
The book series is just phenominal. As all movies must, based on books, changes were made but done well so no complaints. You can always give the Sweedish version of the movie, it's really great too, since you miss the main charecters. I don't know if you read books, but The Millenium Series is a great place to start.
THANKS so much for checking out this wee gem. It's a beaut no doubt. I watch both the original and this a few times. The original is, while quite raw, is pretty phenomenal when you consider it's 'their' version of made-for-tv(!). And this flick, well it's like a weird bit of asmr I could have on in the background but still end up getting glued to it; it's weirdly hypnotic after a few viewings :/ Obviously the higher-ups were hoping for a buncha these flicks but this first one didn't stick as much numbers-wise I guess to let them keep going; so that's a sad loss. When they announced and then watching Mindhunter years after this, it felt like Fincher had a lot left to give, wanting to continue with the Millenium movies, and so he just poured it all into the tv series instead, and we are all the lucky to benefit from those two seasons. Sony did recently try to reboot it with Claire Foy but that didn't stick either. That's too bad as well.
Daniel Craig actually passed out during the hanging/strangling scene towards the end, and got to leave work early as a result. Productiuon wrapped for the night, and the production note included, 'Let Daniel go 15 minutes early due to unconsciousness.' Also, the Enya song that played during the scene (Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)) was played originally as kind of a joke during I believe the table read for the movie, but they ended up liking how eerie it felt for his character.
A rare case where all the adaptations are much better than the original novels. I love this movie and I’ll always resent the suits that didn’t feel like the sequel was worth it.
Hmm, "much" better might be a stretch and i'm not even sure just better would be close to the general consensus given how the books are very much in the classics territory. Haven't read them in over a decade though, so what do i know. Very much agree that this movie was good and i would have liked to watch the sequels as well - it's a damn shame.
This movie is unusual in that instead of a three part story this one is told in five parts. The two main characters don't even meet until halfway through. Anyway, it's different and interesting and it works. Lisbeth Salander is my favorite character in literature and it's such a bummer that Stieg Larsson died after finishing only three books in what was going to be a collection of ten Lisbeth Salander/Mikael Blomkvist stories. Have you thought about reacting to Cloud Atlas (2012) with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, directed by the Wachowskis. It's an amazing movie.
Lisbeth is such a stoic badass! Hope someday you watch the Swedish version too. The US version is way higher budget and more moody and stylish, but the Swedish version feels more authentic and Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, Sherlock Holmes) will always be Lisbeth in my head!
This is one case where I don't think one is significantly better between original or remake. I saw the original first, then read the books and then saw this version. Of course the remake in short is better because of budget but both tell a good story with great acting. I do like that this version brings his daughter back into the story and her part in solving the mystery instead of just making Lisabeth that more OP. But I prefer how the original handled Harriet, them cutting out a step made it hard to believe she hid for so long.
This is a great movie, though definitely hard to watch in places. The Swedish ones are worth watching too for more of a 'full' story, but imo the first one has always been the best one. The other books/movies are still good, but the first really has a unique thing going with the mystery plot and the way it unfolds. The author of the book, Steig Larsson unfortunately passed away a while back. The literal Swedish translation of the title is actually "The Men Who Hate Women", while "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is the English title. At the time of the author's death the book series was unfinished but also on a note that is an 'okay' ending because it was still an ending of a larger arc. However, controversially, the series has continued ghostwritten and another three books (supposedly based on notes he had) have come out since.
In case you didn't know, an interesting thing about Rooney Mara is one of her great grandfathers founded the Steelers (Art Rooney) and another founded the Giants (Tim Mara).
Makes Louise Belcher's Halloween costume, "The Dragon With The Girl Tattoo" interesting. Great movie! Saw this during my cine binge days. That included Fracture, Shooter, Inception, Shutter Island, Rush Hour 3, the one with the invisible aliens that were zapping people, Tom Cruise's War Of The Worlds, Meet The Robinsons, The Princess And The Frog and Unstoppable, even Beowulf. A lot of reactors sleeping on awesome movies like Fallen, Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers and Russell Crow's Robin Hood!
Loving the Fincher kick. Highly recommend “True Detective” season 1 if you haven’t hit that yet. Not Fincher but possibly the best season of episodic tv ever.
As someone who read the trilogy, I have to say I much preferred this one to the Swedish movies and I'm sad they never adapted the second and third books.
I think both versions are quite good. The main reason I’d recommend the original, Swedish version is simply due to continuity, as it would be a bit of a shock to go from this version to the Swedish for the 2nd & 3rd films.
I love this movie so much!! But there are two scenes I always skip on rewatch: the first attack on Lisbeth at her new guardian’s apartment, and the very last scene because it hurts so much to see her heart get kicked in the nuts. Otherwise, this is such a solid investigation movie and there’s so much story they packed into this.
I skip that first scene too. I love this movie and I absolutely loved the books, but that scene when the guardian attacks Lisbeth is just way too much for me.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Aw damn, forgot about the cat. I've actually gotten a kitty cat of my own these past few years, so that particular shot would hit me on a different level now too. Tough scenes in this movie.

@@wormwoodsuncle Yeah! though that dude has appeared in loads of British comedy shows from late 90s early 00s. So seeing him in GoT was weird as fuck for me. Same with Kevin Eldon (another Uk comedy guy) who was in GoT.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of my favorite movies of all time, I wish they would have done two more of the sequels from the books, with Rooney Mara, I have all three of the Swedish version, Naomi Rapace was good as well
It'd be interesting to see what you'd make of the original Swedish version. Plus you'd then have the chance to watch the 2 sequels as well (but if you thought parts of dragon tattoo were grim, the 3rd movie is tough as well). I personally preferred the original movie to the Fincher one, perhaps because I saw it first and so the mystery element was gone, but I think I just found the Fincher one to be cold. Very well made, great cast, great cinematography, great sound design and score, but overall just left me cold. The original version just all seemed more normal, and low key, while keeping the mystery element. And I vastly preferred Michael Nyqvist's portrayal over Daniel Craig's (but that might be a personal bias). I'd love to see you compare them as two adaptations of the same material.
I swear David Fincher doesn't know how to make a film that ISN'T a technical stunner! The cinematography, shot composition, all of that in this is just ridiculous.
There's a revenge movie you might like that's set in a small UK town, and done kind of fly on the wall/documentary style. Its got a feel like it could almost be someone in your local town getting revenge on the local thugs. Its called Dead Man's Shoes and stars Paddy Considine.
That title sequence goes H A R D as FUCK. Some might consider this blasphemous, but I think I honestly prefer Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Karen O's version of Immigrant Song better than the original Led Zepplin one. I was blown away by Fincher's direction and Mara's performance in this one. REALLY wanna watch it again sometime soon.
Watch the Swedish version. Not only is it better it also has the rest of the story with another two movies. The David Finches version makes it Mikael's story when it's supposed to be Lisbet's story.
The Fincher version is way better, glad you went with it. Honestly I’ve seen shot by shot comparisons and it’s not even close. Fincher just knows how to set a scene.
The actor playing the social working did a great job portraying fear and pain during the tattooing session:-) I wonder if he's a method actor....maybe got a real tattoo to get closer to reality.
I loved this film, Rooney Mara was fearless in making this......... I hated seeing her character getting her heart broken at the end...... I think this film needed to fight bare knuckled...... no need to soften up anything........ Shame we didn't get the American sequels....... but, if you like Rooney Mara, give her a watch in "Carol"..... totally different character but still fearless.
The Swedish miniseries follows through on the trilogy and is absolutely worth watching. I enjoyed it immensely, though I do miss Plummer and Craig in their roles (not a diss on their counterparts, I just love both actors).
The original Swedish movie is very much worth watching, as are the two sequels (they were made for TV though, so the budget went down) and the books are good too. Lizbeth Salander is a great character and she and Blomqvist made a good team. There's a lot more depth in the books of course (at times it's a bit boring with explaining all the libel suit and other side plot issues) but all the characters are complex and their relationships get more time and explanation. The original title for the book is Men Who Hate Women - and we see a lot of those in this story, from Harriet's father and brother to her "guardian" and other side characters. Not all of them though - her boss is a good guy, Vanger, and Blomqvist (who maybe likes women in general a little too much, lol).
Also her original guardian. That's one thing I hate about the American version not getting sequels. His story and his relationship with Lisabeth is lost. Their relationship is one of my favorite subplots of the books.
Absolutely haunting and tragic movie. This movie was introduced me to NIN who actually produced the soundtrack. Lisbeth is an absolute hero of mine as well. She's a tank.
I have the minority opinion that this version is superior to the OG Swedish version. Noomi Rapace was amazing of course, as was Michael Nyqvist (who had a cameo in this version). But I'm just a sucker for Fincher's filmmaking and pacing, and Trent and Atticus' score. I remember when they announced Rooney Mara playing Lisbeth, and I was skeptical. I'd only known her from her role in The Social Network. But she proved me wrong. Also this feels like a more accurate adaptation of the book. The Swedish trilogy is amazing as a whole, and sadly we didn't get adaptations of the next two stories from Fincher. I would have been 100% on board for those.
This is a filmmaking masterclass. People who say the swedish version is better only say that because it was first, its foreign, and they think it makes them cooler to say the "original" is better. This movie is superior in literally every way.
@@dash4800 People can have different opinions, you know. To each their own. Furthermore, "foreign" is a relative concept. Believe it or not, but there are humans living outside of the Anglosphere. For me, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) is the more "foreign film".
There is (IMO) no topping the original Swedish version of this movie. Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig do their best which is excellent but the role is owned by Noomi Repace.
I love both versions, but I actually prefer the Fincher version tbh. It took more stylistic chances, and I think Roony Mara as Lisbeth Salander was inspired and perfect casting. My only main criticism of the film is how anticlimactic the final act is, even if it's technically more faithful to the novel.
@@LockeDemosthenes2that's the issue I have with this one. I love Fincher, but it just look to similar to the original, even some shots are similar. I do think Noomi rapace gave a better performance.
As good as the movie is, the three books are FANTASTIC. They remain among my top ten most enjoyable books of all times. I'm utterly befuddled they didn't convert the remaining two books to film (other than the Swedish ones which are good but lack high production value). Read the books - your heart will be mended since Lisbeth and Mikhail are reunited. And Lisbeth becomes a much more formidable force since she is now a billionaire....
it was not an easy read as well😅fucking brutal narrative but incredible themes, it gives you a startling perspective on the atrocities of exploitation and i would say, it sticks with you for life. beautiful work ❤️💯
Still prefer the original Swedish miniseries "Millenium" with Noomi Rapace (Rooney Mara was cast because Rapace wasn't interested "I already played this character") The story in this movie is just one third of the series so if you want more watch the miniseries. I think it's better. Also because Daniel Craig is a bit too badass to play a stuffy journalist. Nyquist is more believable.
Lisbeth's character is so interesting & Stellan is so creepy in this one 😫 That line about ignoring your instincts out of politeness has gotten many women murdered. Fk being polite. If something is off say no - Better to look silly and paranoid than dead in a ditch.
Yes I was disappointed at the ending The director just gave her another shit sandwich at the end, we wanted more for her , maybe just a little bit of happiness for her, anyways Great movie
I gotta say mate, I would've went with the original Swedish version. Other than being much more faithful to the original novel, there's more details, better casting (Noomi Rapace is truly an incredibly talented actress, and the very best choice to play Lisbeth Salander), and the Swedish one was made as part of the full original Millennium Trilogy all at once. Cause to fully appreciate the characters, especially Lisebeth's background. The only sequel to the English-speaking Dragon Tattoo is Girl In The Spider's Web, which is the 4th novel, 1st novel in the 2nd trilogy. Also, it has a different cast.
That f*ckin' horrible creepy curator is played by Dutch actor Yorick van Wageningen, who also appeared in Terrence Malick's ''The New World'' (2005). You should really watch the original Swedish trilogy (this movie is actually a remake of the first movie), tho, don't get me wrong, David Fincher did an excellent job of his version
Tbh, the one thing that ruins this movie for me is that r*pe scene. I know it's MEANT to disgust me, but I don't need a movie to go THAT far to make me hate a rapist and feel for their victim
Not a bad remake, but it just underscores that there was no reason for it to exist. The original is superb, and nobody who would watch this anyway would have any problem watching a movie in Swedish. It's infuriating how Hollywood does this. Just release the goddamn original in American theaters and promote it properly, ffs.

I love the original and the remake.
Watch the Swedish version, it's even better imo
100 times better
I love both versions, but I actually prefer the Fincher version tbh. It took more stylistic chances, and I think Roony Mara as Lisbeth Salander was inspired and perfect casting. My only main criticism of the film is how anticlimactic the final act is, even if it's technically more faithful to the novel.
Fincher is better in my humble opinion
@@LockeDemosthenes2that's the issue I have with this one. I love Fincher, but it just look to similar to the original, even some shots are similar. I do think Noomi rapace gave a better performance.
No its not...they are on the same level.
Sad to see it end? So are we, we should have had adaptations of the next 2 books as well
I liked the Swedish version more. This one feels overly edited.
YES! HIGHLIGHTING LOOSES ITS PURPOSE IF YOU DO IT TOO MUCH!!
Have you watched Last House on the Left? Original and remake?
This is a great book series…
I've seen both versions and I think Rooney Mara's Lisbeth was scarier and more heartbreaking. It's a shame the sequels never got made.
I can't believe they didn't make the next 2 movies in the series. You really should watch the Swedish trilogy if you have the time.
Watch the extended swedish original =)
You must watch Martyrs, the original one, not the American remake. Plenty of revenge. Lots of suffering.
It will be interesting to see your reaction to the films "Robocop" and "Robocop 3" 👍
You have to watch the original Swedish trilogy to find out why she burned her father.
SUPERB MOVIE!
The Swedish series was amazing.
Jimmy - I couldn't understand how you don't have more subscribers...and then I saw that stupid Derek Jeter hat. I love your videos!
I was devastaded when i heard abou it the passing of the author 😢
Lisbeth's character is so interesting & Stellan is so creepy in this one 😫 That line about ignoring your instincts out of politeness has gotten many women murdered. Fk being polite. If something is off say no - Better to look silly and paranoid than dead in a ditch.
great reaction🙂have seen it 2 times... what a film pls react to *wind river* *manchester by the sea*
U should watch the original Swedish version, in my opinion it’s better 🤷🏼♀️
Diplomatic immunity
Yes
I was disappointed at the ending
The director just gave her another shit sandwich at the end, we wanted more for her , maybe just a little bit of happiness for her, anyways
Great movie
I prefer the Swedish version. This one weakens Lisbeth's character as she is in the book.
Watch the 3 part Swedish version. Ten times better.
I loved this movie but I will never watch it again.
Watch the original swedish films! I hate it when great films get the "USA" treatment, because people can't stand reading subtitles.
