The Abit Siluro is actually a geforce mx200 card, since mx400 should have 128-bit memory bus. The card was probably too cheap for Abit to have another PCB with "mx200" printed on it...
Maybe, it's a rather strange video card.
Yeah, 64-bit SDR is a MX200 feature. A normal MX400 should have either 128-bit SDR or 64-bit DDR.
Abit also released a "real" Siluro T400 with the full MX400 specs, which does indeed use the same PCB (albeit colored black). I have one laying around. The heatsink has fallen off mine though, since whatever they used to hold it on didn't age well.
For little money, the GeForce2MX 400 (128bit) running on v8.05 driver, can basically do wonders for a K6/2+ @550 system.
47fps in Q3 demo001 1024x768@32bit and everything maxed out + sound.
GeForce2 Pro managed to squeeze only about 3-4 more frames.
Yeah, if you want to use it for older systems, it's great, because you can use way older drivers than newer cards.

Honestly, I feel bad about using the same 20 games in all videos, I have hundreds of games, but unfortunately benchmarking many of them takes a lot of time, some games are simply easier to test.
I'm trying to add new games though :)
GF2 MX 400 128bit was cheap and powerfull. Great choice for everyone on small budget!
I agree, paired with a decent CPU you could have had a good experience.
This graphics card is compatible with Windows 2000 and XP and maybe Windows 98/SE. It is also compatible with games like GTA 3, GTA Vice City, Metal Gear Solid 2, Elder Scrolls 3, Warcraft 3, Mafia, Silent Hill 2 and Max Payne assuming you have a good computer (at least a high-end Pentium 3 or a 2.0 ghz Pentium 4 processor or faster) and a good amount of ram (at least 256 mb ram). It would easily play late 90s games such as Quake 3 or Half Life and can play early 2000's games though it might struggle especially with GTA 3, GTA Vice City, MGS2, and Elder Scrolls 3.

Yes, it had a 128-bit memory bus. My 128-bit GF2 has no brand, nothing, maybe some OEM stuff.
I have only played quake on on raspberry pi emulators and I didn't know the original game was so dark. Thanks to your video i'll heavily lower my contrast to be more accurate

Paired with a Duron 1000 or Athlon XP 1500/1800+ and its a perfect match. Still not sure on the specific model mine is due to how many versions Leadtek made and mine not matching any one exactly. It is at least reference spec though, not MX200 spec like my "3G Graphic" MX400.
Really nice to see both main versions of a GPU being tested. Answers a lot of questions.
Shame that Nvidia still hadn't figured out 32bit colour performance. SiS and Ati already had it sorted.
Nvidia were always behind the curve with the technology, they had some breakthroughs though, but not many.
@@MidnightGeek99 Unfortunately when it comes to retro PC, sometimes it is better to use something with drivers that are somewhat good. I find a different problem with every attempt to use my Ati and SiS cards, unique to each set up. So I end up gravitating back to my Nvidia cards. Only exception is the Savag4 - it is only picky with the driver version vs win95 or win98 so it's fine - and less buggy than the TNT with detonator 3.68 (can run DX8.1 games).
My dad had a GeForce2 MX card in his AMD K6-2 400MHz system. I don't know what the card is exactly but it has A4-NV11-E1 and ANV11E1MX-32M written on it and a date code of 0109, so definitely a GeForce2 MX with NV11 GPU and 32MB VRAM but no idea who it was made by. The fan on it is branded as KG King Cooler Metal Technology and the VRAM chips are branded as Macrocosm LSI-4160102. The PCB color nicely matches with the MSI MS-5169

Ah, the MX400 was a card I bought a couple times because it was easy to get. Walmart had them on the shelves.

I bought a couple MX400's from two different retail outlets. In both instances, the card was a dud from the get go. One was an MSI card and the other was an XFX. Both were so glitchy and horrible that I turned to ATI for awhile. Wasn't until the 8800 GS and the 9800 GTS that I went back to nVidia for awhile. Tho now I'm pretty much on the AMD train due to budgetary limits & a preference for their drivers & UI interface.
Yeah, some MX 400s were duds, skip to the FX line and we have the same stuff :) I mainly had nvidia, switched to ATI with the HD 4770, amazing card.

This was the first graphics card I brought myself. It was £250 at the time, retail. Used it for UT.

GeForce2 MX400 is available in both 64 bit SDR and 128 bit SDR variants as I've unfortunately found out having posessed both variants :P
I even edited the Wikipedia page "List of Nvidia graphics processing units" to reflect that.
A proper MX400 128 bit SDR/64 bit DDR variant with an active cooler is not a bad card, plenty available and can use very old 9x drivers for maximum compatibility with older games.

I had one of these back in the day. Was my 2nd AGP Card. 1sts was a Riva128. In between I had an ATI Rage something in PCI. Then I built a new PC and used the GFMX400 AGP. It worked well for me. I do remember being able to play just abouot anything at High settings. Up until BF Vietnam. I couldn't play that one...and a new PC it was time for.
GF2 MX was a big leap in performance compared to Riva.
@@MidnightGeek99 Yes, it was. Believe we got the Riva in 97 and then I built with the MX in 2002. 5yrs back then was like 10yrs or more today lol.
I had a Geforce 4 mx440 64Mb SDR 64bit bus version, but paired with a poor Celeron with 600mhz, that i overclocked to 850mhz, it improved a lot bit still had cpu bottleneck as hell 😂, i played Sonic heroes, NFS underground, THPS4, even GTASA but with a lot of stutters because the only 128MB of system RAM.. Nice memories trying to squeeze every fps posibble because i had no money to upgrade 😅.
I would like to see a video about different versions of the gf4 mx440, it had at least 5 different memory/bus configurations
Unfortunately I have only 2 versions of the GF4 MX, but I'm trying to gather the other versions as well, I really like them :)
If I recall correctly, Geforce 2 was memory bandwidth limited in general, even with DDR memory, mainly because of unoptimized rendering (which was fixed with GF4 MX). No wonder GF2 MX400 with 64bit memory bus performs uninspiring.
That's right, most GF2 cards did not have enough memory bandwidth.
You should start incorporating Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix in your reviews. It was very demanding hardware-wise in its era.

The CPU gets hot, or the motherboard? :)) If the CPU is a Prescott, it might get hot, yes.
I for myself did not have issues with the 3.2 Prescott, but I did not check it thoroughly.
Low end Geforce MX... That using to be a dream for kid me on a family Pentium 4 using a SIS 315 16mb as graphics during the early 2000s. And I get worked up about 8gb VRAM on Nvidia modern cards nowadays, it all seems pointless now.
Well, against integrated cards, the MX was a god, integrated cards back then were really bad.

My first graphic card was MX 4 4000 (not 440) with 32 bit (!) memory bus. Probably even MX 2 400 is more productive. :)

Lol, my grandpa still uses the MX400 with a Socket A 462 Sempron 2500+, 1gb DDR1 and the legendary Windows XP. He wouldn't let me take that pc because he has a lot of important data on it

oh, geforce 2 mx? it was a goddamn goat. one of the best gpus for its time ever for the price. i had a geforce 2 GTS, and it was a DDR card in an era where memory bandwidth was everything... and it had twice as much of it as the mx, but still, the mx held its own very well and was dirt cheap. just dodge the 64mb cards which used to all be 64bit and you're good.
I agree, the 128-bit versions were ok, and yeah, they were cheap. I have a GeForce2 GTS, and now I'm curious to test it against the MX 400.
Have you tried downloading more RAM for the 64-bit card?
Yes, I download extra 192 VRAM, but it seems 256 VRAM at 64-bit is as slow as 64 MB at 64-bit :|
I have one of those ugly green cards. GF2 mx400 but it’s a DDR version. How big of a difference you think it would be from the SDR version?
i don't think there is a ddr version of the mx. that's a geforce 2 GTS or Ultra
Honestly, there were a lot of versions for the GF2 MX, but, if the card has DDR and 128-bit, it's faster than what I was using here.
@GraveUypo If my memory serves me well, there were some DDR versions also, but don't quote me on that.
Mafia is quite intensive on the CPU. To reach 60FPS at 1024x768 you really need a fast Pentium 4 or Athlon 64.
I have never tested CPU performance with Mafia, but now that you are mentioning it, maybe I will!
It lacks 64-bit DDR version to cover all the mx400 series. I have the same blue abit mx400 but with a 128 bit bus btw)

Yeah i knew some people who upgraded from integrated graphic to GF2 mx.
Going from some integrated sis or intel at the best to GF2 mx was like magic.
Friend played NFS Porsche unleashed i think in one night when he upgraded the VGA

You will need to use 512 MB of RAM, otherwise you're going to have issues.
The CPU is ok, there will be some games that won't work because of the frequency, I think that 2.2 / 2.4 is the maximum that you should use; however, those games are not that many.

Now cpu wise thats the only pemtium that i could find i know its kinda too much for some games but i dont think i will play speed sensitive games

The biggest problem with the GF2 MX is the memory bandwitdth, and I don't know if the memories are that overclockable.

Quake 3 is really CPU limited. I have a Pentium 4 1,7 GHz 512 MB DDR Ram and i don't get 90 fps or more.... even with Geforce 2 GTS or Geforce 3 Ti....
Similar Thing in GTA Vice City... don't get higher than 60 fps even in lowest Resolution and 16 Bits... so there have to a CPU LImitation...
Geforce 2 MX-400 is a great Retro Card. Becasue of the CPU Mimitation it will be enough if you will have this card in a System like P3 1,3 GHT or P4 1,7 GHZ like me.
If you buy a Geforce 2MX-400 look for the 128 Bit be careful! the 64 Bit Models sucks... and don't buy the MX-200....
I can recommend Asus V7100 its Geforce 2 MX 32 MB and its cheap 5-10€ costs
Its almost the same as Geforce MX400 but with lower Clock Speed 175 MHZ instead of 200 MHZ but it snot really a big difference only 3-5% maybe.
If you want a Gefore 3 look for the 3Ti 200 its fast enough and the chepeats GF 3 card that you can buy.
with this card you can play Tony Hwks Pro Skater 3 at 1280x1024 Maximum smooth,. GTA Vice City 1280x1024 Maximum smooth too and even GTA 3 is pretty smooth if you disabling Blur.
Geforce 3Ti 200 runs much faster then Geforce 2 GTS. And you have a Pixel Shader card and DX8:)

They were decent, even for gaming, lower the resolution, the settings and that's it :)

@@polomellitus166 for you yes , but not for me it already sounds robotic and as an English speaker it sounds like me trying to speak a foreign accent but not quite right , if for instance, he was speaking English but fluently then it would sound better , but its so disjointed , i just dont like the aesthetics of the voice , its like me speaking i dont know Egyptian but pausing every word and saying it robotic , i find it hard to listen , maybe slowing it down might help ?

Your video card did not support shader effects, so it was an MX card, yes, but it could be either a GF2 or GF4.
