Honestly I wouldn’t care if he’s writing a song about his actual feelings or not. If I find something relatable and he didn’t actually feel it, isn’t that even cooler that he can reach out and touch me anyway? Anyway this is a super cool song I’m getting it stuck in my head.
I agree a 100%. The majority of "big" artists out there don't really sing about their feelings, don't even write their own songs. So basically they ARE all telling lies. But a song doesn't have to be true for the audience to relate. They relate to the story the song tells, not necessarily to the artist.
It's sounds like you've been feeling down on yourself for "not being authentic." But just like a painter can paint someone else, a singer can sing about someone else's situation. Long ago my English teacher told the class never to assume a poem was autobiographical (including ones in the first person). The "I" in a song or poem is the narrator, who may be a totally different than the artist. I don't think you should feel bad or guilty about producing songs that people needed or related to. :)
I think it was important for singer himself to admit that he tried to be interesting and relatable for his listeners using lies. He realised his true intentions and those didn't seem right for him.
"Gangsta" was the first song I heard from Will Jay, and I appreciated the commentary and message. "Never Been In Love" was the reason I subscribed, because it felt like someone was finally saying it was okay for me to take my time. Tons of artists sing songs they don't particularly relate with because someone else wrote it, and they bought the rights. That doesn't make the song itself meaningless. They're not lies, they're narratives. And the story this far has been riveting.
"Never Been In Love" was the first song by Will Jay I heard and I loved it because it was like he read my mind. It was refreshing hearing a pop song that took that position on romantic love. I thought this is interesting what else does this guy have to offer?

First of all, I love Never Been In Love (and this song, Lies!) and I'm aromantic--AKA, I've never been in love and I never will be, at least not romantically. But I don't mind if you have, because songs don't have to be about you (the singer/songwriter) to be *true*. Never Been In Love isn't true about your life, but it is true about mine and about a lot of other people. But with so many love songs (love songs are good, there's just a lot of them) it's nice to have a song that's not about that for once, you know? Like, I can listen to any Taylor Swift love song and it's a great song and I love it (same with breakup songs) but it's not about *me*. It's nice to have songs like Never Been In Love because I have a song *about me* and not make it all sad oh I wish I was in love blah-blah-blah. *The point* is, never in my life would I be able to write and produce and make a song about me not being in love. But you made that song *for* me, and when I found it and listened to and loved it (lol) I went *"This is a song about ME"* *Make songs that are fake and not about you. Make them about other people, people you don't even know, people who can't make songs. They can always be true about someone else.*

This song is astonishing. To reveal the "darker" side of oneself takes so much courage!! I know it sounds crazy at first, but I think it's comparable to clothing. You choose your clothes and decide which parts you want to show or hide - hence you deliberately create the image others receive of you. Now, imagine not being able to hide the parts you feel uncomfortable or insecure about. Imagine standing butt naked infront of people - letting everybody see the way you are with no disguise, no extenuation, no lies. Jay must have taken up a lot of courage to write und especially publish this song. This honesty about one's own songs and oneself is truly rare to find and I thank jay for opening up about it. Everyone lies sometimes and even though it is nothing to be proud of, one should not dwell on it to much. The most important thing is to reflect on one's actions and to be honest with ONESELF. If you're honest with yourself, you'll mostly be honest to others too and prevent lying to someone again. In my opinion, this song displays the reflection of one's lies, which is the hardest part. It's the part where I personally try to deny a certain behaviour or action I am not proud of. When I come to the thought of realization, I start to feel guilty and ashamed. I remember telling him on insta how i thought his songwriting was genius and that he was one of my biggest inspirations from a songwriter perspective and asked him for advice. He told me that the most important thing was to be honest when writing music. I think that's very true and when i first heard the lyrics of this song i was confused for only a fraction of a second, because i first thought that this was at odds with what he had told me. But thinking about it i have come to the conclusion that what counts is that there is an honest feeling that is conveyed, you know? As long as it's a good song it doesn't need to be "true". I think a good songwriter should also be able to write stuff unrelated to him with as much emotion as he would if it was. And as far as i can judge will did that excellently, he is infact a genius. when songwriting, you sometimes have to get into character basically and i dont think there is anything wrong with that. For example i have never ever been in a relationship, yet I've written a few songs about break ups and all that stupid love shit I'm very happy not to be concerned with at the moment. But most of the time i just had an idea and somehow made it into a song, and i try to really channel what i would be feeling if i was in that situation. Writing a song about a situation you have actually never been in isn't a lie i think. Everyone does that, cuz truth be told, if songs were only ever about things that were real, music would be a heck less interesting, moving and inspirational. He wrote some amazing songs that resonated with lots of people and moved them, that's something to be proud of. Songs don't have to be true word for word, it's just important that they come from a true place of heart Edit: but also good for him to get this off his chest. I can imagine this to be quite the burden for him. I'm really proud of him. He has developed so much as an artist But also. THIS SoNG. Is frickin AMAZING!!! I love how he is peeling off his clothes like the layers of lies until he is left with his authentic self. Even though the clothe he was wearing presented a nice picture of himself he feels uncomfortable in them.
This song made me so uncomfortable in the best of ways. This song made me anxious and relate. " I'd rather tell myself if I ignore these thoughts they'll go away...truth is I hate confrontations", I had to stop listening and come back after a couple days because I started crying, this song felt like I was in a depression drop and dealing with an anxiety attack, but it also felt like I was facing myself to deal with the lies I tell myself and others I lie to my family a lot, because it's easier than making them understand, it's easier to tell my friends the truth and how I feel than my family so I don't even try anymore to tell my family. So thank you for making me actually confront myself about things. I have some real thinking to do. This is my favorite song at the moment.

One thing that I've always really admired about your music is how genuine your songwriting is, and how it reflects into every song you've put out, this one included. And in my opinion, that is entirely unrelated to whether or not those experiences were real to you or not. Every song you've put out, every lyric you've written, to me, felt like it meant something to you. You were in love when you put out never been in love, but you knew there was a meaning behind what you were writing. There was a truth behind the optimism you tried to spread with broke and dealing with student loans. Even if you were writing it to fit some sort of far off persona, that persona spoke to so many of us. Those words you write are words that so many of us really needed to hear, and I will always be so thankful for that. Thank you, once again, for putting out an amazing song, and solidifying your place as my favorite singer.

I don't even know how to respond to this: gorgeous cinematography, lighting, and editing, extremely catchy (and slightly heartrending) song. And despite saying you feel like your work has been a lie, its still managed to touch so many people, and I know its been really influential in my life. We all feel fake sometimes. It's not wrong to create a song that once reflected how you might have thought or felt but doesn't anymore. That just makes you an incredibly good artist to still be able to convey that emotion even after the personal connection becomes less immediate, though I'm sure I'm not saying anything you don't already know. I found your music back when NBIL came out and have loved everything since, even the ones that might not resonate with me on a personal level, because they're all so well done, and each one seems better than the last. I know I am continuously in awe of the work you put out and the growth in its presentation. I only hope that it makes you happy and doesn't come at the expense of your personal health. I really hope you don't feel bad about changing between making/releasing NBIL, people, feelings, etc all change so rapidly, and it isn't lying to make a song about an experience you're currently having, and then have that change. You are definitely not the only one to make a statement about yourself, only to change later on, that's what the passage of time is about. Things like songs and social media are great time capsules for who you are at a moment in time, but they aren't weights tethering you to a personality you've grown past. Even if your songs are “lies” as you put it, you do put part of your soul into them. Maybe you aren’t broke now, but you knew what it was like once. Maybe you were in love when saying you weren’t, but you knew what it felt like to not be. All the best lies come from a point of truth, anyways. There are hundreds upon thousands of singers and lyricists writing and performing songs about situations they have never experienced, heartache they’ve never felt. Authors write about situations that have never or could never happen all the time. That doesn’t make them liars. The same goes for you. And even if you did “lie” in your songs it’s your right to do so. Be creative! The only thing that really matters as a musician is if you are happy with what you create when you create it. Even if you regret it later. But if you feel guilty over what you have made, that’s another issue. In terms of this specific song, you are so wonderfully creative and heartfelt. It hits heavy in the twisted and edgy kind of way and I love it. The musicality of the melody line, the instrumentals. Everything just hits. You are an amazing musician, doing things I know some can only dream of. All I ask of you as a fan is that you are happy with what you do, and are happy in general. Fans don’t matter unless you put yourself and your well-being first. But even still, I am glad to be a fan of such brilliant talent.
You may not tell the truth but that doesn't make you a liar. You're amazing and never think less of yourself. It's ok, you are amazing in so many ways and your music makes my day just that bit better and your music shows you, perhaps not the you that you want to have shown now but it's amazing and means something. Never been in love means something to people and even if you were in love, it doesn't make the song any different. Show you or someone else or whoever you want and you'll still be loved and have amazing music that means so much to people.

singing songs about things you've never experienced so that it you can be relatable is what even the greatest artists do. But revealing that is something no artist does. Musical artists can write songs for people they feel need to have some sort of comfort. Something they know SOMEONE must think and feel. It doesn’t need to be a song that’s relevant to their current self. It can come from past emotions or ones they think they’ll have in the future, or even just a feel-good motto/anthem they think far too many people need. Like when Meghan Trainor released the song Me Too. She wasn’t gloating about her life or saying that people wanted to be her. She was releasing a song she knew thousands of young girls would listen to and get a boost of confidence from. She wanted them to have a song that gave them a sense of self worth and love. We live in a generation that is CONSTANTLY listening to music. We enjoy it more than silence, it gives us inspiration, helps us express emotions, and gain a sense of companionship from it. If artists want to be heard and become popular, they usually need to give the masses something they can empathize with, convey emotions they know people have. And people accusing them of doing so obviously don’t understand music.

On a serious note, you telling “lies” in songs like Never Been In Love doesn’t bother me at all - firstly because music is just another form of storytelling, and not all stories you tell have to be 100% true. Anyone who writes knows that one of the best writing techniques out there is exaggeration. Secondly, whilst songs like NBIL might not have applied to you when you wrote them, you still went through a time in your life when you weren’t in love, and I’m guessing you drew on memories of those experiences to help write the song. In my opinion that’s not dishonest at all. You still went through what you wrote about. As for “broke” - well, first of all, if you want to be metaphorical there are different kinds of broke, and we’ve all been at least one - but most importantly, you’re allowed to want to relate to us, or for us to relate to you. It’s a natural human instinct. It’s not shameful. It’s human. Don’t beat yourself up for something we all do.
Gorgeous song and video ❤️ The funny thing about this song is that every single one of your songs I've ever listened to are all so incredibly honest. A story doesn't have to be your truth for it to be true for the person hearing it. I feel like so many of your songs are completely honest about being human to the point where, when they reach the right person, they really have the opportunity to connect on the deepest level. Everything else it just the trappings of storytelling. That's my overly dramatic two cents anyway. Keep up the awesome work 💕

Dear Will, I think the beauty of the songs you write is being relatable without being relatable. Like for me, your songs have the power to make me go through a specific set of emotions despite not having experienced the specific topic (like I can only write my name or Homesick). So to me it doesn't feel like lies at all, because what I feel with every single one of your songs is real. Connecting with your adience is real, and so the songs are real. Not a lot of artists can do what you do 💜

I agree a 100%. The majority of "big" artists out there don't really sing about their feelings, don't even write their own songs. So basically they ARE all telling lies. But a song doesn't have to be true for the audience to relate. They relate to the story the song tells, not necessarily to the artist.

It's sounds like you've been feeling down on yourself for "not being authentic." But just like a painter can paint someone else, a singer can sing about someone else's situation. Long ago my English teacher told the class never to assume a poem was autobiographical (including ones in the first person). The "I" in a song or poem is the narrator, who may be a totally different than the artist. I don't think you should feel bad or guilty about producing songs that people needed or related to. :)
I think it was important for singer himself to admit that he tried to be interesting and relatable for his listeners using lies. He realised his true intentions and those didn't seem right for him.

"Gangsta" was the first song I heard from Will Jay, and I appreciated the commentary and message. "Never Been In Love" was the reason I subscribed, because it felt like someone was finally saying it was okay for me to take my time. Tons of artists sing songs they don't particularly relate with because someone else wrote it, and they bought the rights. That doesn't make the song itself meaningless. They're not lies, they're narratives. And the story this far has been riveting.
"Never Been In Love" was the first song by Will Jay I heard and I loved it because it was like he read my mind. It was refreshing hearing a pop song that took that position on romantic love. I thought this is interesting what else does this guy have to offer?

Hi Will! First of all, I love Never Been In Love (and this song, Lies!) and I'm aromantic--AKA, I've never been in love and I never will be, at least not romantically. But I don't mind if you have, because songs don't have to be about you (the singer/songwriter) to be *true*.
Never Been In Love isn't true about your life, but it is true about mine and about a lot of other people. But with so many love songs (love songs are good, there's just a lot of them) it's nice to have a song that's not about that for once, you know? This song is astonishing. To reveal the "darker" side of oneself takes so much courage!! I know it sounds crazy at first, but I think it's comparable to clothing.
You choose your clothes and decide which parts you want to show or hide - hence you deliberately create the image others receive of you.
Now, imagine not being able to hide the parts you feel uncomfortable or insecure about. Imagine standing butt naked infront of people - letting everybody see the way you are with no disguise, no extenuation, no lies.
Jay must have taken up a lot of courage to write und especially publish this song.
This honesty about one's own songs and oneself is truly rare to find and I thank jay for opening up about it. Everyone lies sometimes and even though it is nothing to be proud of, one should not dwell on it to much. The most important thing is to reflect on one's actions and to be honest with ONESELF. If you're honest with yourself, you'll mostly be honest to others too and prevent lying to someone again.
In my opinion, this song displays the reflection of one's lies, which is the hardest part. It's the part where I personally try to deny a certain behaviour or action I am not proud of. When I come to the thought of realization, I start to feel guilty and ashamed. But only after experiencing this, I can reflect on myself and try to become a better person.

I remember telling him on insta how i thought his songwriting was genius and that he was one of my biggest inspirations from a songwriter perspective and asked him for advice. He told me that the most important thing was to be honest when writing music. I think that's very true and when i first heard the lyrics of this song i was confused for only a fraction of a second, because i first thought that this was at odds with what he had told me. But thinking about it i have come to the conclusion that what counts is that there is an honest feeling that is conveyed, you know? As long as it's a good song it doesn't need to be "true". I think a good songwriter should also be able to write stuff unrelated to him with as much emotion as he would if it was. And as far as i can judge will did that excellently, he is infact a genius. when songwriting, you sometimes have to get into character basically and i dont think there is anything wrong with that. For example i have never ever been in a relationship, yet I've written a few songs about break ups and all that stupid love shit I'm very happy not to be concerned with at the moment. But most of the time i just had an idea and somehow made it into a song, and i try to really channel what i would be feeling if i was in that situation. Writing a song about a situation you have actually never been in isn't a lie i think. Everyone does that, cuz truth be told, if songs were only ever about things that were real, music would be a heck less interesting, moving and inspirational. He wrote some amazing songs that resonated with lots of people and moved them, that's something to be proud of. Songs don't have to be true word for word, it's just important that they come from a true place of heart
Edit: but also good for him to get this off his chest. I can imagine this to be quite the burden for him. I'm really proud of him. He has developed so much as an artist

One thing that I've always really admired about your music is how genuine your songwriting is, and how it reflects into every song you've put out, this one included. And in my opinion, that is entirely unrelated to whether or not those experiences were real to you or not. Every song you've put out, every lyric you've written, to me, felt like it meant something to you. You were in love when you put out never been in love, but you knew there was a meaning behind what you were writing. There was a truth behind the optimism you tried to spread with broke and dealing with student loans. Even if you were writing it to fit some sort of far off persona, that persona spoke to so many of us. Those words you write are words that so many of us really needed to hear, and I will always be so thankful for that. Thank you, once again, for putting out an amazing song, and solidifying your place as my favorite singer.

I don't even know how to respond to this: gorgeous cinematography, lighting, and editing, extremely catchy (and slightly heartrending) song. And despite saying you feel like your work has been a lie, its still managed to touch so many people, and I know its been really influential in my life. We all feel fake sometimes. It's not wrong to create a song that once reflected how you might have thought or felt but doesn't anymore. That just makes you an incredibly good artist to still be able to convey that emotion even after the personal connection becomes less immediate, though I'm sure I'm not saying anything you don't already know.
I found your music back when NBIL came out and have loved everything since, even the ones that might not resonate with me on a personal level, because they're all so well done, and each one seems better than the last. When I first heard this song, ten minutes ago on Spotify, I was shocked but the fact he’s expressing it through here makes me forgive since everyone tells lies in their life no matter how big or small. Besides even if he can’t relate to it all, many of us here that are his fans do and I love that I’m able to find a song I can actually relate to out of all these songs now. Hi, big fan, also ace as hell and found u through "never been in love". I really hope you don't feel bad about changing between making/releasing NBIL, people, feelings, etc all change so rapidly, and it isn't lying to make a song about an experience you're currently having, and then have that change. You are definitely not the only one to make a statement about yourself, only to change later on, that's what the passage of time is about. Things like songs and social media are great time capsules for who you are at a moment in time, but they aren't weights tethering you to a personality you've grown past.

Even if your songs are “lies” as you put it, you do put part of your soul into them. Maybe you aren’t broke now, but you knew what it was like once. Maybe you were in love when saying you weren’t, but you knew what it felt like to not be. All the best lies come from a point of truth, anyways.
There are hundreds upon thousands of singers and lyricists writing and performing songs about situations they have never experienced, heartache they’ve never felt. Authors write about situations that have never or could never happen all the time. That doesn’t make them liars. The same goes for you. And even if you did “lie” in your songs it’s your right to do so. Be creative! The only thing that really matters as a musician is if you are happy with what you create when you create it. Even if you regret it later. But if you feel guilty over what you have made, that’s another issue.
In terms of this specific song, you are so wonderfully creative and heartfelt. It hits heavy in the twisted and edgy kind of way and I love it. The musicality of the melody line, the instrumentals. Everything just hits.
You are an amazing musician, doing things I know some can only dream of. All I ask of you as a fan is that you are happy with what you do, and are happy in general. Fans don’t matter unless you put yourself and your well-being first. But even still, I am glad to be a fan of such brilliant talent.
You may not tell the truth but that doesn't make you a liar. You're amazing and never think less of yourself. It's ok, you are amazing in so many ways and your music makes my day just that bit better and your music shows you, perhaps not the you that you want to have shown now but it's amazing and means something. Never been in love means something to people and even if you were in love, it doesn't make the song any different. Show you or someone else or whoever you want and you'll still be loved and have amazing music that means so much to people.

music industry is hard, the only way actually live as a musician is to make music appealin and relatable to your audience, this isnt neccesarly bad, youre not really lying when youre talking about never being in love or bein broken hearted when youre not, what matter is the message you spread, in those cases will jay was trying to spread a specific messages about love, you dont HAVE to experience those cases to be allowed to sing about it, i dont think this song is only about him, he has already admited in someway in other songs how he feels about the music industry like in "until now" , i feel like this song is directed is someway to other famous pop artists that just make music for fame and money instead for the sake of actually enjoying doing music, its ovb that he´s also talking about himself i hope this doesnt turned to much for him, since ive started listening to him ive loved his music, its nice to finally listen to new stuff that sounds a bit more sincere like this song, i know no one asked for my opinion but wanted to let this anyway, loved the song , it says so much about him in so many different ways and thats amazing

Musical artists can write songs for people they feel need to have some sort of comfort. Something they know SOMEONE must think and feel. It doesn’t need to be a song that’s relevant to their current self. It can come from past emotions or ones they think they’ll have in the future, or even just a feel-good motto/anthem they think far too many people need. Like when Meghan Trainor released the song Me Too. She wasn’t gloating about her life or saying that people wanted to be her. She was releasing a song she knew thousands of young girls would listen to and get a boost of confidence from. She wanted them to have a song that gave them a sense of self worth and love. We live in a generation that is CONSTANTLY listening to music. We enjoy it more than silence, it gives us inspiration, helps us express emotions, and gain a sense of companionship from it. If artists want to be heard and become popular, they usually need to give the masses something they can empathize with, convey emotions they know people have. And people accusing them of doing so obviously don’t understand music.

On a serious note, you telling “lies” in songs like Never Been In Love doesn’t bother me at all - firstly because music is just another form of storytelling, and not all stories you tell have to be 100% true. Anyone who writes knows that one of the best writing techniques out there is exaggeration.
Secondly, whilst songs like NBIL might not have applied to you when you wrote them, you still went through a time in your life when you weren’t in love, and I’m guessing you drew on memories of those experiences to help write the song. In my opinion that’s not dishonest at all. You still went through what you wrote about. As for “broke” - well, first of all, if you want to be metaphorical there are different kinds of broke, and we’ve all been at least one - but most importantly, you’re allowed to want to relate to us, or for us to relate to you. It’s a natural human instinct. It’s not shameful. It’s human. Don’t beat yourself up for something we all do.

A story doesn't have to be your truth for it to be true for the person hearing it. I feel like so many of your songs are completely honest about being human to the point where, when they reach the right person, they really have the opportunity to connect on the deepest level. Dear Will, I think the beauty of the songs you write is being relatable without being relatable. Like for me, your songs have the power to make me go through a specific set of emotions despite not having experienced the specific topic (like I can only write my name or Homesick). So to me it doesn't feel like lies at all, because what I feel with every single one of your songs is real. Connecting with your adience is real, and so the songs are real. Not a lot of artists can do what you do 💜
