- My mom was a flight attendant for United Airlines in the late 1950's and today she's sharing some pretty amazing stories about what it was like being a stewardess in the Golden Age of Flying! From unruly male passengers to smoke filled cabins to bridge playing in the lounge. Forget everything you think you know about flying in the 50's and 60's - this is the real story! We don't say this in the video, but my parents were married in 1960 and enjoyed decades together raising us and traveling the world before my dad passed in 2009. I dedicate this video to him. Wish you could have been here, Daddy. We miss you.

I LOVE this! Your mom’s so engaging. I felt like a part of her adventures. I miss the golden age of flying...the perks and freedom no longer available I experienced as a 70’s kid my children can’t imagine 💐
It's so true. I still love to travel of course, but the actual flight part isn't nearly as cool as it used to be.

Loved this interview. My husband worked a short stint at Pan American Airlines in 1969. I remember seeing stewardesses back then. They always seemed so glamorous. That was also the summer the 747’s were delivered. An exciting time.
It really was, Sharon! Although I can't imagine the cabin filled with second hand smoke was super fun;). Always bad with the good I guess!
From someone who is has been in the airline industry for 34+ years, thank you, thank you, thank you! My career has taken me from working in the airport to jetting the skies (flight attendant).., and later management. So right about today's business, not at all like the good'o days. It has become a form of public transportation - neither good nor bad, it's just the way it is. Since I am a child of deregulation, your mother's accounts about the Golden Age were absolutely beyond adorable. More importantly, permitted me to learn even more about how my foremothers paved the way for each of us still in the flight attendant biz. Again, thank you and may God bless Barbara and your family.

I stumbled across this video..and I don't think I've ever seen one quite so..I don't know..WHOLESOME. I appreciated this from multiple standpoints, but particularly as flight attedant who started at the very end of the 'goleden age' (1977) and will be working my final flight come this November when I will retire my wings.

Your Mom is delightful! What great stories! And I am old enough to remember when people could smoke on planes (Yuk....I've always been a non smoker). Always thought it was crazy that the smoking section would just end at a certain row. Like the smoke would know not to go beyond that! Lolol
