It takes a great deal of heat to melt ice . Boiling water would probably melt the ice quicker . Water is better at containing heat than steal . Even though the steel balls are very hot , they don't have that much heat . Cooling hot metal with water is one of the best ways to cool metal because water has a high heat capacity compared to most materials .

That was so freaking extraordinary.
Drilling holes into the ice beforehand weakened the ice considerably, since the water could drain out, replacing liquid water with air when the subsequent balls were dropped in. Without the drill holes, the ice would have withstood much more.
