    Heat capacity of lava is 1450 J/kg/K, for iron it's 462, so actual lava would have done better.
    Latent heat of melting ice is 330 000 J/kg and heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kg/K.
    This is why the ice always wins.

      @bronco5334 3 года назад +35

      It's not the energy required to melt the ICE that's really sucking up all the heat; it is the energy of BOILING THE WATER. The specific heat requirements for evaporating water is RIDICULOUSLY high. Something like 2,200,000 joules per kg. And that's not the energy required to heat the ice from -10C to 100C, it's JUST the energy required to turn it from 100C water to 100C gas.
      If you were to instead put the ice on top of the "lava" instead of putting the "lava" in a hole in the ice (so the water flowed away once melted, instead of immersing the "lava" in water), or if you drilled a drain hole through the ice block to drain the water away as the ice melts , it would melt much more ice.

    • @PassiveSmoking
      @PassiveSmoking 3 года назад +88

      That's the principle of latent heat at work. The ice can't get any hotter than 0c until it's absorbed sufficient energy to change into water, and the water can't go any hotter than 100c until it's absorbed sufficient energy to change into steam. It also illustrates the difference between heat and temperature. The lava and the ball bearings may be at a very high temperature, but they don't have sufficient heat to melt all that ice.

    A good testament to the fact that the specific heat of liquid water is VERY high at 4.18 J/(kg*C), about double that of water ice. So the ice melts enough to let the metal dive down a bit, but once it melts to water, it becomes much more resilient to changes in temperature!
