Divergent was best as a book series, where the philosophical implications of everything was allowed to drive the narrative, compared to the movies only showing the topical "damsel in distress turned badass love story".
Yeah they had to train his breathing and stuff so he could look as robotic as possible while sprinting like that. So they unintentionally made him athletic as heck because of it to the point of needing to have him slow down so he wouldn't catch the bike.

Ansel ran like that because he felt it was true to his character. His character was not athletic or a fighter. He was a thinker and scientist. So Ansel decided that he would not know how to run well and therefore gave this stellar performance, which I believe is incredible and true to his character.
