Alex Smith is like Hayden Christensen to Star Wars; both obsessively ridiculed by many during their time but you look back on it now and realize they were FAR from the problem.
I love the contribution of all of these guys to this discussion, but it's amazing to see how Alex Smith has grown over the years. His experience is so unique because of all the expectations and the struggle he went through, but he carried such a spirit of generosity when talking about mentorship, teamwork, and empathy. I was so proud of him when he finally turned it around on the field, but I respect him even more after watching him talk during this panel.
What a wonderful gathering of heroes, gladiators, as my history teacher always referred to us athletes in class who played for the school team (includine myself)...football an American sport, 49ers an American phenomenal movement in American history. The second team to have that relationship to our beloved country. (Patriots, the other team) David thanks for covering the event.
Thanks for sharing clip of such a great opportunity to hear from past and present QBs that have lead the Niners through out the recent years --brought back memories of witnessing truimph and struggle being a Niner Fan 😂 GO NINERS!😆
Steve mentions the ability to settle pressure and adrenaline. Takes me to the Detroit NFC CHAMPIONSHIP game, defense makes that 4th down stop everyone is screaming including the sideline. But look at Brock, grabbing his helmet. It looks no different than him being in a lunch line grabbing his chips and sandwich… it’s incredible. The calmness in his face I can’t even begin to understand how he calms his nerves like that. I honestly think a lot of it is his faith.
Love all these guys. Garcia and Steve were real gritty QB's. They got hit hard when QB's got hit and fought back. Love the stories about Candlestick Park. That was a real stadium. I miss that stadium. Smith was a great QB. Had he had a real good coordinator he would have been a HOF. Felt bad that he lost his job to kap. He was much better than kap, and would have won that SB against Balt.
I love Alex dearly, but I don't think he would have brought them back in the Atlanta game. I thought that in the moment and I still think it now, years later. Kap was a special QB who made the entire NFL recognize the value of athleticism at the position when they forgot about it with Vick. He struggled at some of the stuff Brock does so well now, reading defenses, finding open receivers and throwing with anticipation. Again, no shade to Alex at all, but the Niners have had some difficult decisions to make about QB's over the years, and I do feel people forget how good Kap really was because of all the stuff that happened after.
Upward arrow. Stands to reason, Brock makes one more quantum leap with another year experience and a whole offseason to prepare for 2024. Window still wide open for this core group.
I'm so grateful to grow up a 49ers fan. From Atlanta and just happened to jump on the bandwagon in 1989 at 7 years old. I'm a lefty and Steve Young was my absolute hero. These 4 men are such amazing role models and so many memories of life connected to watching them lead and play. Brock Purdy is so f*cking good.
Smith had so much pressure, lesser players would have crumbled. Garcia was so awesome, just wish he'd been given better tools. I think Brock will understand that come contract time. He'll earn big contract but he surprised if he does a Mahomes. Long contract which will aid the team medium/long term.
I love and appreciate these 4 QBs. But my absolute favorite is Joe Montana. I was privileged to watch him on the field and win 4 SBs (XVI, XIX,XXIII, XXIV) and 3 MVP honors. I will always love Joe and I feel the same with our current QB Brock Purdy.
Steve Young- traded for (played in USFL) Jeff Garcia - undrafted (played in CFL) Alex Smith - 1st overall pick Brock Purdy - Mr. Irrelevant there is no 1 solution.
I hope Kyle has that same Fire as his dad! What Steve mentioned about how he was mad at Steve for not throwing 8 TD's in the Superbowl is awesome. Can't wait for the season to start
Joe seems like a jerk. My brother and I saw he and Jennifer at SFO on an escalator and my brother was like “Hey Joe!” and he didn’t even look at us. I get not wanting to be bothered but there weren’t many people around and he completely ignored us. 🤷♂️ thought it was odd not to even acknowledge a fan.
@@treyvonjackson9293Greatest professional victim of our time. I'm guessing the grift is getting a bit stale by now. Everything is about him and what a victim he is of nothing. The rest of his life, especially when the money really dries up, will probably be miserable and full of regret. Especially being radicalized by that woman.

They pay attention to how much time you are logged into your playbook and film study nowadays, and I learned his last season he spent less time on his playbook and film study than people in the practice squad.
So much respect for Alex Smith, who's clearly been humbled by his journey. I stood on a table when he ran it in against the Saints, and gasped with everyone else when Aaron Donald piggybacked his reconstructed leg into the ground. I really appreciate hearing his perspective, and I hope he can find more outlets for his voice...coaching, mentoring, whatever.
Kinda wild, one guy who was picked #1 overall sitting next to a guy who was picked dead last and the situations they went into...great point by Garcia!
Joe's departure from the 49ers was not amicable. Seifert thought Joe was a has been the last Superbowl year, and asked Joe to tutor Steve. When Joe said no, it's not my job Seifert went ballistic. Steve also thought Joe was being selfish by not helping him. Joe was not willing to help his replacement, and I don't blame him. Joe worked his ass off to help build the dynasty, and didn't get the respect he should have from the team. Joe to me is the GOAT. I was 24 when they won XVI, Joes legacy is what I see.
Jeff Garcia never had not even close to a defense the other 3 QBs had during their successful runs. Always wondered if Garcia would've won a SB with an elite defense
@@bnsuave Crap had ONE good game ... he was a poor QB, couldn't read a defense, couldn't find open receivers, and if his first read wasn't there, he panicked. The DEFENSE carried those teams while he was the QB. Alex led the team while he was the starter.
Respectfully disagree, Alice had a great defense but was a true game manager that held the offense back, that’s why he didn’t get his job back. That’s a fact. Kap had 2 good years, the year he led us to a superbowl with record performances in the playoffs and when he lost to the LOB in the NFCCG…That LOB team roasted HOF Qb manning in the superbowl, like big smackdown. After that year Kap lost Harballs and the league caught up with him, true…but Alice naver played to that level.
@@bnsuave Keep being delusional .... I'm sure it helps you sleep at night. Crap had ONE good game, and rode the defense the rest of the time. You don’t have to get personal because we disagree. You like Alice for some reason, you don’t provide stats or any hard evidence. You don’t like Kap for some reason, I’m guessing because he respectfully kneeled to bring attention to police brutality against black people. Good day.
Not really sure about that. We saw with the Chiefs that Alex Smith couldn't get over the hump, and some of those Chiefs teams were more loaded than the Harbaugh-era Niners. Not to talk bad about Alex Smith given this event, but it was what it was at the time.
Sorry, Brock. I think Wilkes blew the SB in Feb. The D pressured KC all game and Mahpmes had difficulties. Going to a loose "prevent" D at the end was EXACTLY what Mahpmes wanted. He knows how to beat "prevent" D damn well. With a 4 pt lead, they should have kept the pressure on.
Yeah, kind of surprised they weren't there. I know with Kap there would've been controversy because the kneeling stuff, but if it would've been just about football, it would've been great to hear his story too and how he had to show leadership in light of some wanting Alex Smith to get his starting job back, and in light of where those Harbaugh-era Niner teams were. Regarding Joe Montana, it's weird. He still may have a problem with Steve Young from what I understand. But yeah, if we're talking Niner QB's, Montana, Young, Garcia, Alex Smith, Kap, and Purdy should all be there. Even Jimmy G despite the controversy surrounding him when he left the Niners.
