- A thorough breakdown and commentary on a sabre fight between Alex Timmerman from Kraken Swords, Florida, USA (in black) & NIck Thomas from the Academy of Historical Fencing, Wales, UK (in red). I really enjoyed the fight breakdown. As a novice, I find I lose what is happening very quickly. It's nice to have it slowed down and reasoning explained. Thanks!
I just started training with Alex and he’s a fantastic teacher. I believe he referred to this sparring session the other day, so this was a treat to watch. Thanks for the great content Nick.
Excellent choice!
Is he still around? Or did he go off the grid?
Very much so.
@@shaunramkissoon2 Do you know anything about his sword smithing/selling business? Is he still accepting orders? I've not been able to get in contact with him
@@shaunramkissoon2 Pls my man I'm dying out here I got no leads and am $1000 down the drain ordering from this guy
This is great stuff Nick. Not as good as meeting up in Bradley Stoke to see the real thing, but we don't normally get the commentary there.
Very instructive. Thanks for that.
Love it. Would like to see more of this in the future if possible!
Absolutly amazing commentary. I beg you to do more of this kind of video!
Just wonderful thank you for taking the time to add all this detail. To me this really lays out what the fight is and I can now work on how to get into these structures in a way that works for me thank you so much.
Best fight analysis I've ever seen posted to RUclips, please do a few hundred more. The fact that you actually know what you're doing, why you're doing it and can fully admit to what you're unsure of is pure gold. I'll happily stand you a pint for each one posted! Happy New Year!
More of this, please!
Ughhh, covid pls go away. I miss my hema ;(
This is quality! I love this type of videos!
Massively help- and insightful vid. Awesome! Thanks a lot!
Craven vs Timmerman reincarnated? I wish I was fencing now. Great analysis. Thanks for doing this.
Do more of these.
Great video, thank you! It is always hard to find what is happening on video even if it has a good qaulity. Sometimes even if you were paticipating : )
What is more, all this explanations are very informative. For me the most important part of this video is a footwork. We wanna try to include more shigting in my own footwork.
It could be also great to have this video separatly on a full speed.
Glad you enjoyed it. The link to the full unedited sparring footage is in the description.
Well worth watching... say's this rough-diamond from afar.
dam I learnt a lot! deserveed like to this video. More like this please!
How can I start learning this at home as a beginner? I fell in love but all the gyms are closed in my area because of covid.
See the playlist below. I started making a series of instructional videos on this style whilst in the lockdowns. This 20 series of videos will cover a huge amount of what you need to know. The analysis video you are commenting will help with some further understanding, and see the analysis if the fight between Esther and Nick that we put up about four years ago. The manuals we work from for this style are all freely available on the resources page of our website swordfight.uk

@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing thank you thank you thank you will do!
could you do a more in depth video abought the traverse to cut on the outside arm?
Super aggressive + using quick footwork cover a lot of distance sound like what sabreurs do in sports fencing lol
I love landing thrusts with a saber (I use the later Italian military saber system which emphasizes the point).
Alfred Hutton would like to know your location
Is there mentions of timing of the hand, body and feet in British Military sources? From the video it appears that Alex would often launch attacks in "false time" i.e. finishing a cut with the hand after a lunge is already landed, which is considered giving the opponent an opening in some other sources. Does the nature of sabre fencing (faster cuts and shorter weapon) make this kind of opening harder to punish?
No, it's simplified to being cut at the time of the lunge and don't lift the arm when initiating a cut as to risk being timed. Alex does indeed throw the hand after the lunge at times, avoiding the risk of timing with the threat of hsi own attack.
what gloves do you mostly use for sabre ?
How does the slipperiness of the basketball court effect your footwork?
It's very grippy in modern trainers, certainly as much so or more than any surface that would have been fought over historically.
I am in Florida and i've never heard of a Kraken swords club, where is it located? I'd love to stop by for a visit
Check them out here. Alex has visited us many times and is super enthusiastic for sabre and the related weapons

Very awesome! Could you take a look at my idea for a modified sparring session below?
First to 2 points = Victor
Hit to face/neck = win
Hit to left quadrant chest = win
Hit to primary arm/hand = 1 point and opponent
switches hands
Hit to offhand/arm = 1 point
Hit anywhere excluding the groin while already at 1 point = win
The above equal a stop in action for the referee to judge action. No ground will be reset upon resuming action.
If a combatant does not already have 1 point and hits anywhere except the face/neck, upper left quadrant of the chest, and/or arms/hands no point is awarded and there is no stop in action. This is done to promote accuracy and to simulate fighting through an injury.
