Hi! Max it is right ... I agree with him all the way on this. In my opinion, there are so called web developers that copy what others are doing and make their video ...
I agree with your view. As a beginner developer, it can be frustrating and even discouraging to see that no matter what framework you use, there will always be something wrong with it compared to others. I've been trying to find what seems easier to me, and go with that
Absolutely. I am returning to the workforce after a couple of years, and the strong opinions often get me wondering whether I am picking up outdated frameworks, and whether I should just drop what I am learning and turn to something new. Just very confusing and disconcerting. Thank you to Max for pointing this out.
Right on point Max! The problem is not having a strong opinion, but rather, what we do with it. Lively debates and discussions are useful, but tearing someone down because of a difference of opinion is destructive. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
As the number of developers in the world grows, the more idiots are brought into the field. It's the same in other areas, I think you have to ignore these people.
Coming from the field of epidemiology to web development, i still go by a core principle in epidemiological research which is that you can do great research with basic techniques and tools, provided that the question you are answering is relevant. Use sophisticated tools or techniques only if you need them. Applying that to web dev, you can build great apps using basic/fundamental tools and techniques, as long as you app solves a relevant problem that help people.
It is what it is, this video helped on two things allowing Max to vent and also for new developers. It will help them open their eyes to this type of critiques and make them feel less confused
I don't think trying to convince others is in itself a bad thing. Putting people down for their decisions definitely is, though. We all like what we like. Maybe we're excited about what we like. But I think sometimes we need to take a step back and consider why something might work for one person but not another. Great video! I can't believe you would wear a YELLOW hoodie, though? Like, come on, are you serious? Blue is objectively better. lol
Totally agree. Strong opinions should be shared as that, opinions, not advices. There are ways to generate engagement without saying “do this or x”, like “why I prefer this over this”. Maybe the impact isn’t the same but the impact on the first is not assured to be positive, so we need to assume that responsibility. The other thing that bothers me is that because of that kind of message, ppl now could interpret debate as an attack, instead of just contributions to the conversation. So toxicity grows in those threads and we find ourselves constantly clarifying that we’re not against the person, just sharing our thoughts because that’s kinda what the threads are for
In both coding and life, I tend to differentiate between constructive opinions, which come with background or explanations, and those merely seeking attention by spewing toxic remarks. While you mentioned that such behavior is prevalent on the internet and social media, I hold a different view - I believe that people, in general, exhibit such behaviors, and the behavior we see on social platforms is just a reflection of this inherent nature. If an opinion is constructive, I'm more than willing to engage and even delve deeper into it. However, if it's solely aimed at garnering attention, I tend to disregard it. There are simply too many individuals clamoring for attention, especially on social platforms, to address them all. Keep up the good work, and don't let yourself be distracted by unconstructive remarks.
My rule of thumb is that those who are toxic about opinions on coding are just that, toxic and they don't/can't contribute to a team. Toxic people will have toxic communications. Great video and good way to call it out.
I totally get what you're saying. I think the developer world is really toxic and people just like to hype the things that they work with. So why we don't take a step back and agree that Angular is a better framework than React.
When you invest time and energy on a stack, that you use to generate value that feeds your family - its important said stack stays relevant. Tribalism - its in our DNA and goes as deep into our ancestral history. As a developer with 20+ years of experience I dont really get involved with these debates because I can adapt to any stack in a few weeks. But I just wanted to point out its not social media problem - social media is amplifying problems with human nature itself.
Subject-Oriented Programming Universal Software Model -- the Future in Software! 100 programming languages? Why not only one? I built it (60% ready) as a programming language, but it can be viewed as an Operating System for managing any informational problem.
it's just how human nature is= I guess despite the subject of discussion, I may have not done that about my dev preferences but I'm pretty sure I have post some shitty stuff about other stuff about life in general....
I don't really think this is that much about getting attention on social media. I also face it in everyday programming life. E.g. in code review, when some asks me to change sth simply based on their preferences. I accept sb's suggestions when their version of code is clearer or of better performance, but if it's simply about personal preferences and somebody can't really explain why their version is better - I reject change request.
Most of the time i do not that a toxicity most of these thread you could learn alot when you read other poeple opnion sometimes you think at the top of the iceberg but some of developer came and destory your strong opnion with reasons like let me have hot take. if you doing DI you do not have a real life. then another developer came and tell how usefull DI and how i could improve my life with it.
Most developers do not even know about byte, word, dword or qword, they just caught up in the frameworks which gets updated for each 6 months and preivous old frameworks knowledge becomes useless. Guys learn something which is not replaceable. I should charge a million dollar for this advice
I have always felt like that when other devs tell me I would have with “X” language because IT’s better. That’s cool bro but I got it done with the language I used as well
Hi max, Been a fan of your course for years and learnt a lot from them namely, angular, react, flutter, go, next (learning now). Just had 2 questions, 1. Will there be an update on GO with more stuff as there is in node? 2. Will there be a course on Android development? If possible need an update or a new course for flutter on desktop and flutter on web. Thank you for the wonderful courses once again.
I *like* strong opinions. Often times those strong opinions are due to enormous research, thought and experience. If they can articulate *why* they have that opinion, that's valuable even if I don't personally find it compelling.
You are far from alone. Unfortunately the internet seems to reward and encourage extreme positional statements. Further (this may apply to other groups as well), a large number of Americans feel threatened by there mere existence of opposing views. And admitting their validity just shakes said people to the core.
I went full circle in 3 years: 1. Learned fundamentals 2. Started to participate in discussions 3. Red basically all opinions about all major topics. 4. Realized that there is no “Real” enginnering, only developers trying to create working software for profit and in 9 out of 10 times no one really cares about what to use/what is best/how to properly do it. We just have to relax and learn as we work. Doesn’t matter who is right or wrong, we only need working product in the end of the day
I've had very similar experience. All fields of engineering, that I've been close up to, have a "striking of balance" where its 60% science and 40% art. And if it works it works.
I'm not interested in your strong opinion about strong opinions :) Conversation is the base of any civilization. If you think `const` is better than `let`, and you think you can articulate the reason behind it? Go for it! This is how our species improves - by talking and by discussing ideas. You can not discuss big ideas, if you can not even handle small ideas like const vs let. And this whole video contradicts itself, since it is trying convince other people that the idea of convincing people is bad. You are doing the very thing you are criticizing and you don't even see it. If that is not hypocritical I don't know what is.
Maybe SM should use AI to highlight opinions vs facts so readers know from the start that’s not meant to be read as rules/facts. That way the clickbait becomes more evident as the title would be written as a fact but the AI already analyzed the thing and tells you it’s an opinion
I honestly can't see where is the issue or problem with having "strong opinions". Isn't it way better than having none? Besides, how can a simple free speech hurt your feelings? And why should people keep anything "to themselves"? Because you are ordering them to do it? And why should anybody pay attention to such command? I'm also curious: How will you enforce it? How will you effectively enforce the censuring of free speech? Are you counting with people simply doing what you need/want? because if that's the case I don t see that very realistic, and if is not the case then... I think you are forgetting the magic word. The fame is a tricky thing. Don't let ego take the best of you. Tt's not worth it. Peace.
I think you misinterpreted the message IMO, the problem is not the strong opinion itself, it is how it is delivered you can absolutely give a strong opinion, but you have to think of a few things firstly its your opinion not a fact , secondly why do you believe in this opinion and give reasons that can help give clarity to people who wish to understand, thirdly you should be able to accept other counter arguments and reasons why your opinion maybe invalid and reflect on what you and others think, its like a debate, you can't because you hate something its automatically is bad, remember there is always 2 side to a coin, of course this is my opinion
that was a great video
you mean communism?
@old_gaffer roflmao xD
why you dont link it though ... when you use it for "commentary" (content leeching)
🚨communism mentioned 🚨
The only scenario where such toxicity serves a purpose is when a developer is making an API and he is criticizing himself
You are absolutely right, toxicity in coding must stop. Focus should be on outcome.

Excellent commentary as always it would be nice if everyone was just helpful. Give your opinion but then explain why it works or doesn't for you.

Nicely put! Thanks Maximilian.
Thank you Max, finaly someone I trust to say the right thing!

All social media became a sensationalistic place to sale stuff instead of helpful place to help everybody! In my humble opinion! :)

Totally agree with Max!!! It's just a fuss about nothing.

It's easy with all the bickering and dogma to get lost in the weeds when one could be busy instead building and trying new things. Good rant.

The current software model is over. I built Subject Oriented Programming. No OOP!
I *like* strong opinions.

Angular sucks :)
I like vanilla PHP and Svelte(Kit), don't fight me for this 😬
Good rant

Most of these strong opinions are from non experienced developers. The more mature you are the more flexible and careful you in your statements

Love u max, u r my guru
Dope hoodie
Stop having strong opinions, they are "so stupid" - That in itself, my fellow hypocrite, is a strong opinion.
I still think that nextjs is better than WordPress ana php, WordPress will never reach the level of next
So you're sharing your strong opinion about other people's strong opinions?
Coders are pretending they are jazz musicians.😅
I like your statement. Especially since they are supposedly working together. I had only gone with pretending to be real engineers.
Industry is in shitty condition
