  • @MikkoRantalainen

    It's worth knowing that the "plug-in power" is technically called bias voltage which should be close to 5 V. It's mostly used for electret microphones which are technically somewhere between dynamic and full condensator microphones. You will basically have a really low / poor mic signal if you actually have electret microphone but connect it to interface like a dynamic mic. For such cases you really want the "VXLR+" adapter which takes 48 V phantom power and includes a transformer to insert 5 V bias voltage to the the miniplug.
    There also exists a product called Røde VXLR Pro which is basically VXLR+ with balanced signal output. If you connect the adapter directly to your audio interface, the Pro version is not worth money. However, if you need to use long XLR cable between the adapter and the audio interface, then the Pro version might result in less noise.
    And basically you have to get Røde VXLR+ if you want low noise because other manufacturers don't seem to provide low-noise bias voltage adapters.

    Using the Rodecaster Pro, can I use the VXLR+ and the Rode Wireless go with phantom power on and not damage the receivers. The reason I ask this question is I have 4 condenser studio mics that need phantom power. I may not always be running the system and I was hoping that the VXLR+ would allow me to leave phantom power always on so that a mistake is not made by forgetting to turn it off when the wireless go's were used. Great video, thanks for the research. Thanks for your reply.

    The simple reason for having or buying devices with xlr connections is to use it with the relative equipment which in this case are xlr microphones, all of these gadgets will compromise the sound quality not matching the audio sources from different inputs I also believe that this converter is overpriced you have to choose according to the situation either to use the 3.5mm connection or the xlr, for those who are aiming towards youtube videos maybe this will work but if you dream of reaching a professional level of broadcast this is not the things you should go for

      Hello Capt Suresh Sharma, it's not easy to completely understand what you are trying to achieve. However, he is one setup configuration:
      1) Rode Wireless go can be connected with the Røde VXLR adapter (no phantom power needed, so you also don't need the expensive transformers). This way you can connect that to one of the XLR ports on the H5.
      2) I am assuming you want to use the Røde Lavalier Go (TRS) with the Wireless go so that's where that is plugged in?
      3) The Rode SmartLav with the TRRS plug will need an adapter to be used in any of the things you mentioned (crsp.li/RodeTrrsToTrs). With said adapter you could plug this lavalier into the Zoom H5 at the top into the XY Capsule on the side. Then you need to turn on Plug-In Power on that port in the settings of the H5.
      4) And lastly with the Azden Shotgun Mic, you'll need a XLR cable to connect to the H5.
      With with all that you have just one VXLR adapter (and it can be the cheapest one).
      You have the Rode Wireless Go with the Lavalier Go as a wireless set.
      The other SmartLav is connected to one of the H5 XLR Ports.
      And the Azden is on the other XLR ports.
      Hope that helps 🌸.

    Hello friend, ask. Do you think it works with a podtrak p4 and with lapel microphones (x2) PowerDeWise?
    I thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +2

      For that use case you would have to get either the VXLR+ or the VXLR Pro. Both would work on the P4 when you activate phantom power on the channels.
      However, when you are already using a P4, I'd also go with XLR mics which I would prefer in terms of sound, handling, and more. But if you are looking for a solution that is super small… yes, this adapter will work for you.
      One more thing: since you'll be sending phantom power to the mics, the battery may not last as long as it would with let's say a Shure SM58 or Beta 58a. Since those do not need phantom power.

      Just don't use the VXLR and then turn on Phantom Power! That'd be bad.
      But you can use Phantom power on the other two (plus and pro) and if you do, it would trigger the auto power on of the Rode VideoMic NTG.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +1

      There is one very important point: if you want to use the Røde VC-1 as an extension, it would not matter if you choose the VXLR Plus or Pro since the whole benefit of the VXLR Pro only comes into play when you use a XLR cable which can transport a balanced signal.
      The Deity V-Link also is supposed to be plugged into the Microphone and then an XLR cable should be used to transport the signal to the Zoom F6.
      The V-Link seems to be best compared to the VXLR+ which is that they both convert Phantom Power to Plug In power but they do not provide a balanced signal (I could not find any information about whether the V-Link does have the circuits to provide a balanced signal in my quick research).
      The VXLR Pro on the other hand does provide a balanced signal and that makes it less likely to pick up interferences.
      You can see a comparison between VXLR, VXLR+, and VXLR Pro in this video: ruclips.net/video/AOmZ6H4aP7U/видео.html
      Last but not least: I have no practical experience with the V-Link but tried to give you some technical differences.

      Honestly, I would ask Røde Support that question. On my recorders that I currently have I only get the options to set 24v and 48v so my guess would be any of the above? Because the electronics of the VXLR+ should take care of the conversion.

    So am I right in saying that if I want to plug a lav mic to the bmpcc4k (its 3.5mm plug doesn't support lav mics), I should get the VXLR+? Also, I have the RODE Videomic Pro+, that one only needs the regular VXLR right? I wanna go from the 3.5mm to XLR cos I've heard that the XLR plug on the BMPCC4K has less noise

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  4 года назад +2

      You got that pretty much right. However… please also check the settings regarding Plug-In Power and Phantom Power on the BMPCC4K.
      The Lav might work on the 3.5mm jack if you can activate Plug-In Power (and if it actually is a Mic Input and not a Line Input, this may also be switchable in software).
      But if you want to use both mics with the XLR port, you are completely right.
      The Lav would need the VXLR+ and Phantom Power activated.
      The Rode VideoMic Pro+ does not need Phantom Power and can be used with the VXLR adapter (make sure to disable Phantom Power on that XLR port).
      Note: I think the Rode VideoMic Pro+ also has the "auto power on/off" which does not activate if not used with Plug-In Power - that means using the VXLR+ and activating Phantom Power would help in that regard. With the VXLR you have to manually power the mic on and off.
      Last but not least: please know that I do know the BMPCC4K, I have never used it and don't know what it is capable of. Also, I have no experience with the VideoMic Pro+ since I got the VideoMic NTG.
      Hope this helps you in creating your rig.

      @@MoElf no, at the moment I don’t. But what you could do instead is connect two mics to a camera with a left/right splitter cable: ruclips.net/video/2z_er0XqmBU/видео.html
      Maybe that’s an idea? Even cheaper, and it can be done with a phone too (with the right adapters). 😍

      If the cables are short, you would be fine using the cheap VXLR adapter. However, then you have to manually turn on the microphone!

    thank you so much for this video! i had a question about how to interface the RØDE Wireless Go receiver outputs into a standard PA system - we tried using a TRS-XLR adapter, but had to apply an inordinate amount of gain and practically max out the channel outputs to get anything reasonably audible. we didnʻt want to apply phantom power and blow out the receivers, so the director ended up getting a bunch of Shure wireless systems, which worked fine. now he has several RØDE Wireless Goʻs that are essentially useless. would the VXLR+ or the VXLR allow us to apply phantom power and get a workable signal coming into the board?

      Hello, strange thing there. But first things first: there is absolutely no point in applying phantom power to an input which should connect to the Wireless Go since that does not need or use phantom power at all (it has it's own power).
      Now there is just one thing I would check next time: the Rode Wireless Go system can be set to a few gain levels internally. Maybe it was set to the lowest there? This setting can be changed on the receiver.
      If that does not help, I don't know what your system is doing then. I have no issues when recording the Rode Wireless Go either into a camera or into my Zoom F6 audio recorder, and I also have experience with using it with a Behringer Mixer unit and running it to speakers that way. All works fine.

    Hi Chris, thanks a lot for this video. I did not know about the difference between the two adapters, so it is very helpful. I have a question. I purchased a VXLR and connected it to my Rodecaster Pro mixer. The adapter itself is VERY noisy, even with no mic connected. This is way too much to be useful. Could the VXLR be broken?
    I would like to connect a lavelier mic to my mixer and just saw it is a condensor mic. I think I need a VXLR+ then, right? But I am a bit worried that this adapter will generate even more noise. Any clues? Thanks a lot!!

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 года назад +2

      I do not have the Rodecaster Pro on hands to test this out however a few considerations:
      1) if the mic needs plug in power (most lavalier microphones do) then yes, you will need the VXLR+ and give the port Phantom Power. But as mentioned in the video, you should not give Phantom Power to the VXLR adapter (non Plus) because that may break your lavalier since it is not made to handle that much voltage!
      2) if (1) is correct… then the problem may be solved by using the VXLR+ because I am assuming that the noise comes form the fact that you are trying to pull up the channel a lot because the lavalier is not giving you a signal (which is most likely due to the fact that it is not receiving any power at all). Or it is not plugged in and then adapter makes the noise because it is less clean when just plugged in.
      3) with the second part of (2): Is the mic plugged in when it produces the noise or is just the adapter plugged in? If you just plug in the adapter without the lavalier, maybe mute the channel because the "open TRS port" may be the problem. On this note: it's always a good idea to mute all channels that are not currently in use.
      These are my thoughts right now with the information given. I hope you can find the right solution and if not, please let me know more details.
      Cheers and have a great day 🌸.

      @@ChrisSpiegl Thanks a lot for your prompt reply and great help. Really appreciated!!
      1) Fortunately, I did not put on the phantom power.
      2) I read that my lavelier is a condensor mic, so I asume it requires some power. This mic had no signal at all, which is quite logic as I know now. The adapter itself produces a lot of noise, also if no mic is connected. I also connected a Shure SM58 mic (dynamic) with a homemade XLR to 3.5mm jack cable to the VXLR adapter to test it. The sound was ok, but still the noise remained. I quess this means that my VXLR is noisy?
      3) I muted all other channels. The amount of noise remains the same, no matter if I connect a lavelier mic, a SM58 dynamic mic or no mic at all (just the VXLR adapter). I also tried some of the other mic channels, with the same result :(

      @@stefanovic8512 That does make it appear as so the adapter is producing unusually high noise. Maybe you can send it back and get the VXLR+ to use with your lav.

    I ordered two 3.5mm to XLR adapters from China. Looks very similar to VXLR but connects balanced XLR directly to balanced 3.5mm stereo plug. Pin 1 (ground) connects to the sleeve, pin 2 (positive polarity aka hot) to the tip and pin 3 (negative polarity aka cold) to the ring. In your picture VXLR short circuits the tip and the ring so adapter should not work with a 3.5mm mono plug. The Chinese adapter works with a mono plug because monolog connects the negative polarity aka cold to the sleeve aka ground.
    I have an old computer mono desktop mic which will use a stereo plug by connecting the tip and the ring together. With Chinese adapter this will short circuit the hot and the cold pin and nothing is heard. With VXLR this should work.
    I ordered 3.5mm to XLR adapters which include 25 cm cable. These are connected as my other adapters except the hot is connected to the ring and the cold to the tip reversing the polarity.
